8:00am Holy Communion

10:30am Parish Communion*

The Order of Service is contained in the separate Service Book.

Opening Hymn*

1. Jesus Christ is risen today, Alleluia,

our triumphant holy day, Alleluia,

who did once, upon the cross, Alleluia,

suffer to redeem our loss. Alleluia.

2. Hymns of praise then let us sing, Alleluia,

unto Christ, our heavenly King, Alleluia,

who endured the cross and grave, Alleluia.

sinners to redeem and save. Alleluia.

3. But the pains which he endured, Alleluia,

our salvation have procured; Alleluia,

now above the sky he's King, Alleluia,

where the angels ever sing Alleluia.

Words: Lyra Davidica 1708 and others

Music: Easter Hymn, melody from Lyra Davidica, London, 1708 as altered in the 18th century (Ancient & Modern – 205)

Collect

Lord of all life and power, who through the mighty resurrection of your Son

overcame the old order of sin and death to make all things new in him:

grant that we, being dead to sin and alive to you in Jesus Christ,

may reign with him in glory;

to whom with you and the Holy Spirit be praise and honour, glory and might,

now and in all eternity. Amen.

First Reading – Acts 10.34–43

Peter began to speak to those assembled in the house of Cornelius. ‘I truly understand that God

shows no partiality, but in every nation anyone who fears him and does what is right is acceptable

to him. You know the message he sent to the people of Israel, preaching peace by Jesus Christ –

he is Lord of all. That message spread throughout Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism that

John announced: how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power; how

he went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him.

We are witnesses to all that he did both in Judea and in Jerusalem. They put him to death by

hanging him on a tree; but God raised him on the third day and allowed him to appear, not to all

the people but to us who were chosen by God as witnesses, and who ate and drank with him

after he rose from the dead. He commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that he is

the one ordained by God as judge of the living and the dead. All the prophets testify about him that

everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name.”

Gradual Hymn*

Alleluia, alleluia, give thanks to the risen Lord.

Alleluia, alleluia, give praise to his name.

1. Jesus is Lord of all the earth:

he is the King of creation:

2. Spread the good news o’er all the earth:

Jesus has died and has risen:

3. We have been crucified with Christ:

now we shall live for ever:

4. God has proclaimed the just reward:

life for the world, alleluia:

5. Come, let us praise the living God,

joyfully sing to our Saviour:

Words: Donald Fishel (b 1950) Music: Alleluia No 1, melody by Donald Fishel (b 1950), harmonised by Eric Welch

Gospel – Mark 16.1–8

When the sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome

bought spices, so that they might go and anoint him. And very early on the first day of the

week, when the sun had risen, they went to the tomb. They had been saying to one another,

‘Who will roll away the stone for us from the entrance to the tomb?’ When they looked up,

they saw that the stone, which was very large, had already been rolled back. As they entered

the tomb, they saw a young man, dressed in a white robe, sitting on the right side; and they

were alarmed. But he said to them, ‘Do not be alarmed; you are looking for Jesus of

Nazareth, who was crucified. He has been raised; he is not here. Look, there is the place they

laid him. But go, tell his disciples and Peter that he is going ahead of you to Galilee; there you

will see him, just as he told you.’ So they went out and fled from the tomb, for terror and

amazement had seized them; and they said nothing to anyone, for they were afraid.

¶ The Liturgy of Baptism

Presentation of the Candidates

The Parents and Godparents stand

Faith is the gift of God to his people.

In baptism the Lord is adding to our number those whom he is calling.

People of God, will you welcome Grace Alexandra to be baptised

and uphold her in her new life in Christ?

With the help of God, we will.

Parents and godparents,

the Church receives Grace Alexandra with joy.

Today we are trusting God for her growth in faith.

Will you pray for her,

draw her by your example into the community of faith

and walk with her in the way of Christ?

With the help of God, we will.

Page 5: Pewsheet - 5 April 2015 (Oakham)

5

In baptism we begin our journey in faith.

Parents and godparents you speak for Grace Alexandra today.

Will you care for her, and help her to take her place

within the life and worship of Christ's Church?

With the help of God, we will.

Decision

The Congregation stands

In baptism, God calls us out of darkness into his marvellous light.

To follow Christ means dying to sin and rising to new life with him.

Therefore I ask:

Do you turn to Christ?

I turn to Christ.

Do you repent of your sins?

I repent of my sins.

Do you renounce evil?

I renounce evil.

The Parents and Godparents gather around the font

The Congregation turn to face them

Signing with the Cross

Grace Alexandra is anointed and signed with the cross on the forehead.

Christ claims you for his own. Receive the sign of his cross.

Do not be ashamed to confess the faith of Christ crucified.

Fight valiantly as a disciple of Christ

against sin, the world and the devil,

and remain faithful to Christ to the end of your life.

May almighty God deliver you from the powers of darkness,

restore in you the image of his glory,

and lead you in the light and obedience of Christ. Amen.

Prayer over the Water

Praise God who made heaven and earth,

who keeps his promise for ever.

Page 6: Pewsheet - 5 April 2015 (Oakham)

6

We thank you, almighty God, for the gift of water

to sustain, refresh and cleanse all life.

Over water the Holy Spirit

moved in the beginning of creation.

Through water you led the children

of Israel from slavery in Egypt to freedom

in the promised land.

In water your Son Jesus received the baptism of John

and was anointed by the Holy Spirit as the Messiah,

the Christ, to lead us from the death of sin to newness of life.

We thank you, Father, for the water of baptism.

In it we are buried with Christ in his death.

By it we share in his resurrection.

Through it we are reborn by the Holy Spirit.

Therefore, in joyful obedience to your Son,

we baptise into his fellowship those who come to him in faith.

Now sanctify this water that, by the power of your Holy Spirit,

they may be cleansed from sin and born again.

Renewed in your image, may they walk by the light of faith

and continue forever in the risen life of Jesus Christ our Lord;

to whom with you and the Holy Spirit be all honour and glory,

now and for ever. Amen.

Profession of Faith

Brothers and sisters, I ask you to profess,

together with Grace Alexandra, the faith of the Church.

Do you believe and trust in God the Father?

I believe in God, the Father almighty,

creator of heaven and earth.

Do you believe and trust in his Son Jesus Christ?

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,

who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,

born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate,

was crucified, died, and was buried;

he descended to the dead.

On the third day he rose again;

he ascended into heaven,

he is seated at the right hand of the Father,

and he will come to judge the living and the dead.

Page 7: Pewsheet - 5 April 2015 (Oakham)

7

Do you believe and trust in the Holy Spirit?

I believe in the Holy Spirit,

the holy catholic Church,

the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins,

the resurrection of the body,

and the life everlasting. Amen.

Baptism

Grace Alexandra is baptised with the words:

I baptise you in the name of the Father

and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit

After she has been baptised:

May God, who has received you by baptism

into his Church,

pour upon you the riches of his grace,

that within the company of Christ's pilgrim people

you may daily be renewed by his anointing Spirit,

and come to the inheritance of the saints in glory.

Amen.

Welcome and Peace

There is one Lord, one faith, one baptism:

by one Spirit we are all baptized into one body.

We welcome you into the fellowship of faith;

we are children of the same heavenly Father;

we welcome you.

We are all one in Christ Jesus.

We belong to him through faith,

heirs of the promise of the Spirit of peace.

The peace of the Lord be always with you.

And also with you.

You are invited to share a sign of God’s peace with your neighbour

The Service resumes with the Offertory Hymn

Page 8: Pewsheet - 5 April 2015 (Oakham)

8

Offertory Hymn*

1. Alleluia! Alleluia!

Hearts to heaven and voices raise;

sing to God a hymn of gladness,

sing to God a hymn of praise:

he, who on the cross a victim

for the world's salvation bled,

Jesus Christ, the King of glory,

now is risen from the dead.

2. Christ is risen, Christ, the first-fruits

of the holy harvest field,

which will all its full abundance

at his second coming yield;

then the golden ears of harvest

will their heads before him wave,

ripened by his glorious sunshine,

from the furrows of the grave.

3. Christ is risen, we are risen;

shed upon us heavenly grace,

rain, and dew, and gleams of glory

from the brightness of thy face;

that we, with our hearts in heaven,

here on earth may fruitful be,

and by angel-hands be gathered,

and be ever, Lord, with thee.

4. Alleluia! Alleluia!

Glory be to God on high;

Alleluia! to the Saviour,

who has gained the victory;

Alleluia! to the Spirit,

fount of love and sanctity;

Alleluia! Alleluia!

to the Triune Majesty.

Words: Christopher Wordsworth (1807-1885)

Music: Lux Eoi, Arthur Seymour Sullivan (1842-1900)

(Ancient & Modern – 194)

Communion Anthem*

Come, ye faithful, raise the strain of triumphant gladness!

God hath brought his Israel into joy from sadness:

'Tis the spring of souls today: Christ hath burst his prison,

and from three days' sleep in death as a sun hath risen;

Now the queen of seasons, bright with the day of splendour,

with the royal feast of feasts, comes its joy to render;

comes to glad Jerusalem, who with true affection

welcomes in unwearied strains Jesu’s resurrection.

Neither might the gates of death, nor the tomb's dark portal,

nor the watchers, nor the seal hold thee as a mortal:

but today amidst the twelve thou didst stand, bestowing

that thy peace which evermore passeth human knowing. Alleluia!

Words: John Damascene, translated by John Mason Neale (1818-1866)

Music: R S Thatcher

Page 9: Pewsheet - 5 April 2015 (Oakham)

Communion Hymn*

1. Now the green blade rises from the buried grain,

wheat that in the dark earth many years has lain;

love lives again, that with the dead has been:

Love is come again, like wheat that springs up green.

2. In the grave they laid Him, Love whom we had slain,

thinking that he never would awake again,

laid in the earth like grain that sleeps unseen:

Love is come again, like wheat that springs up green.

3. Forth he came at Easter, like the risen grain,

he that for three days in the grave had lain,

back from the dead my risen Lord is seen:

Love is come again, like wheat that springs up green.

4. When our hearts are wintry, grieving, or in pain,

then your touch can call us back to life again,

field of our hearts that dead and bare have been:

Love is come again, like wheat that springs up green.

Words: John Macleod Campbell Crum (1872-1958)

Music: Noel Nouvelet, French Carol, 15th century, harmonised by David Iliff (b 1939)

(Ancient & Modern – 212)

Post Communion Prayer

God of Life,

who for our redemption gave your only-begotten Son

to the death of the cross,

and by his glorious resurrection

have delivered us from the power of our enemy:

grant us so to die daily to sin,

that we may evermore live with him in the joy of his risen life;

through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Final Hymn*

1. Thine be the glory, risen, conquering Son;

endless is the victory, thou o'er death hast won;

angels in bright raiment rolled the stone away,

kept the folded grave-clothes where thy body lay.

Thine be the glory, risen conquering Son,

Endless is the vict'ry, thou o'er death hast won.

Page 10: Pewsheet - 5 April 2015 (Oakham)

10

2. Lo, Jesus meets us, risen from the tomb;

lovingly he greets us, scatters fear and gloom;

let the church with gladness, hymns of triumph sing;

for her Lord now liveth, death hath lost its sting:

3. No more we doubt thee, glorious Prince of life;

life is naught without thee: aid us in our strife;

make us more than conquerors through thy deathless love;

bring us safe through Jordan to thy home above:

Words: A toi la gloire, O Ressuscité, Edmond Budry (1854-1932), translated by Richard Birch Hoyle (1875-1939)

Music: Maccabaeus, George Frederick Handel (1685-1759) (Ancient & Modern – 218)

Giving of a Lighted Candle

The minister gives Grace Alexandra a lighted candle and says

God has delivered us from the dominion of darkness

and has given us a place with the saints in light.

You have received the light of Christ;

walk in this light all the days of your life.

All Shine as a light in the world

to the glory of God the Father.

(Braunston) & 21 April (Hambleton),

Please see the diary for times and

locations. At Oakham, the APCM will

take place on Sunday 26 April, following a

joint 10am Parish Communion, when we

will need to elect new members of the

Parochial Church Council (PCC) and a

new Churchwarden. Please give prayerful

consideration to whether you might be

able to fulfil one of these roles – more

details can be obtained from current PCC

members or the Churchwardens.

Furthermore, Peter Hill has advised that

he wishes to step down from his role in

the Treasurers team. We therefore invite

anyone who feels that they are willing and

able to take on this role to contact the

Churchwardens, or to speak with Peter

directly. You will need to have experience

with the use of spreadsheets and the

Internet, and in understanding the basics

of keeping Accounts. Peter is willing to

assist anyone who relishes this challenge,

and will guide them through the various

tasks involved.
