Large cities represent areas of intense concentration in activities. These activities are the origin ofthe principal causes of environmental change both in a local and in a global perspective.

Transportation is certainly one of the primary contributors to environmental pollution.

Working in partnership with local passenger transport company A.C.T.V (Azienda ConsorzioTrasporti Veneziano) we have developed and realized the dream of E1 boat, a new waterbus whichcomplies with Z.E.B (Zero Emission Boat) program. The E1 boat carries 200 people throught theCanal Grande, reducing pollution emissions, noises and vibrations, guaranteing maximum comfortof the passengers, reducing the risk of erosion by wave wash - generated by ships - on Venice’s

historic buildings.

E1 vessel is based on an hibryd electric propulsion system with batteries, asynchronous AC motor(60 kW a 1300 rmp), variable frequency inverter. This combination represents the best solution

because asynchronous AC motor is characterized by less weight, less manteinace requirementsand costs, more reliability compared to a DC motor.

LIUTO (Low Impact Urban TransportOmnibus) research project consisted of acollaborative venture between six partnersfrom three European countries. Based on E1vessel’s project it is defined as a LowEmission Boat (L.E.B). This hybrid propulsionvessel have been conceived in order tooptimize E1 vessel’s performance.

ACTV identifies its requirements for a new vessel’s performance in view of two differentconditions:

• in the narrow, shallow waters of the Venetian canal system;• in the open water of the lagoon or “Lido”;

The aim was to develop a new model that would produce minimum wave wash, achievingoptimal performance in terms of energy efficiency and manoeauvability.Moreover this solutions will provide to preserve from the wear of time the historic buildingsof Venice for the next years.

Venice’s water traffic legislationpermits only two speed - slowin the canals and faster in openwater.In order to optimize vessel’sperformance our project wasfocused on engineering ahybrid diesel-electric system.

The hybid system optimizesthe boat’s performance at bothspeeds, permitting a switchfrom diesel when operating inopen waters to electricpropulsion in the canals.

Auxiliary inverter: all the ship services are fed by thebatteries via a 230VAC auxiliary inverter. In case of a failureof the inverter a by-pass supply through a feeding linecoming from the diesel generator is provided.

Emergency electric propulsion motor: asynchronousthree phase squirrel cage motor self ventilated, 11 kW 440VAC 870 rpm, in case of failure either in the main inverter orin the main electric propulsion motor the system is equippedwith a take-home emergency motor with star/delta starte

We have combined our expertise and our Skillswith Ferretti Group, one of the world leaders indesign, construction and sale of luxurymotoryachts.

The result of this union was the culmination ofa dream, the first hybrid yacht over 20 feet longThat Produces negligible tailpipe emissions.

The yacht is a 75-foot tri-deck that has a ahybrid propulsion system. When running ondiesel and cruising at eight knots it emits 10kilograms of carbon dioxide for each nauticalmile. The engine charges a battery pack thatcan also power the boat. In this diesel-electricmode, it emits less than half a kilogram eachnautical mile.

Placed at the centre of the engine room with the two main diesel traction motors, togetherwith the BMS (Battery Management System) which monitors the status and operation of thebatteries, the Control System represents “the heart” of the Hybryd Drive System and servicesonboard.

The Company developed aspecial algorithm that allowssensorless control of thesynchronous motor.The torque / speed controlof the two motors isensured by the two voltage-impressed, liquid-cooledinverters fed by the tractionbatteries.

Workability

While operating in “energy storing” mode, the batteries rapidly store the energy produced

by the motorgenerator while under way. The batteries can also be recharged simply by

plugging them to the shore power connection. For short range coastal cruises, the yacht

can, for example, leave port, cruise around and return using only the electricity drawn and

stored from the terrestrial network, providing significant energy savings and much less

pollution.
