Headstart

From Monday 3rd December through until Wednesday 12th December, Kurnai College runs its “Headstart” program. During

this time, all students, including new enrolments and Grade 6 students transitioning into Year 7, go through an orientation into

their new year level, and commence work for 2019, that will be reported on. A number of testing programs will also be run,

including subject pre-tests. These pre-tests help teachers shape their planning over the holidays, and students who miss the

program will significantly impact others’ learning as well as their own.

It is essential, and expected, that all students will attend throughout this time as it is of course a normal school program.

Students who do not attend will find themselves behind on their work before the new year even commences.

On Monday 10th December from 11:30 – 12:30 pm, we will have a small awards ceremony, where students who have topped

each of the year level subject will be presented with their certificates. All parents and carers are cordially invited to this event.

Activities Days

The campus will be running activities days on Thursday 13th and & Friday 14th December. Students should have brought

home permission forms by now – if not, please check with them, and ask then to obtain a new copy if necessary. Students

without permission forms returned by the due date will not be permitted to attend.

Building Project

We confirmed this morning that the new buildings will be ready for us to start classes at the beginning of the 2019 school

year.

We are meeting with the architects overseeing the next stage this afternoon. Demolition of the remaining science buildings,

general purpose rooms in F Block, and the Library will commence immediately after New Year, with asbestos removal being

the first part of this project, as it must be undertaken whilst no-one else is on site.

College Awards Days

Our whole College Awards day will be held on Wednesday 19th December. As this is held in the Auditorium at Federation

University in Churchill, all Morwell students will be transported by bus. Again, permission forms have been distributed –

please check with your child, and ensure this is returned to the school.

All parents are again invited to attend this wonderful event.

Year 10 Formal

Our Year 10 students have now completed their assessments, and will be celebrating their year at the Formal Dinner this

evening. There will also be a mini awards ceremony to present KLD awards to this years recipients.


Year 7 News ……….

Testing

All Year 7’s have recently undergone testing in numeracy and reading. This is just one

measure that we use to look at student progress and needs. I have met with most

students so far to feedback to them their growth and their actual ability. For most,

there are no surprises, but some have identified a need to focus more, work harder

and try harder in their testing. If you would like to know more about how your child

has performed, please contact me and I will explain the information.

Year 7 is a tough time for students and families as they learn to navigate the way that

secondary school operates. This time of year is one of the hardest; the uncertainties of

all the activities and changes makes it hard for students to prepare themselves for the

week ahead. I am proud of our cohort for the way that they have approached the end of

Year 7.






Individual Learning Plans

All students who require an Individual Learning Plan have had their student support group meetings this week. For those

families who were unable to attend, a copy is in the mail for you to use to participate in your child ’s learning. In each case, the

students have been key to determining the goals being set. A common theme is the use of the Easy Learning Club as a

strategy. We strongly recommend this for all students.

2019

It will be my pleasure to continue working with this cohort in Year 8 in 2019. Our structure will be a little different, and I

welcome the support of Katherine Carbone and Ross Johnson who will be Assistant Team Leaders for Year 7 and 8 next

year. Our work together in managing the junior sub school will begin in Headstart so we look forward to connecting with you

during that time.



College Awards

The end of the year provides us with the opportunity to reflect on our progress and celebrate those high achievers who work

endlessly to be the best they can be. It is a great time to recognise students across the college who have performed well

academically. We encourage all students to reach for the stars in the future.

End of Year Preparations

Students have been advised to clear out their lockers before the commencement of the Headstart Program. Please remind

your child that any unused pens, pencils, calculators, books and binders need to be saved for next year. Outgrown uniforms

can also be donated to charity or sold second-hand.

Celebration Day

This week students and staff are looking forward to celebrating the end of the year by spending some time with students at

Victory Park. The scavenger hunt and Jump and Climb activities along with the healthy option lunch will keep us fighting fit and

ready for the final few weeks of 2018.

Activity Days

The Activity Days provide students with a great opportunity to explore some new experiences and learn about teamwork and

getting along with others. Students will be able to try their hand at fishing and are encouraged to laze around on a towel in

anticipation for the upcoming holidays.

What’s coming up at Year 8!

Headstart

While many students are beginning to look forward to the holidays, the final hurdle before getting there involves the

Headstart Program. The program is unique in that it provides students with an idea of what next year will be like. They learn

about the electives they will have as well as the classes they will be in and the expectations that their future teachers will

have regarding materials for class. This is the perfect opportunity for them to ask for any changes both for form groups and

electives. Attendance is compulsory for these reasons as it is meant to lesson the stress and anxiety that a new year can

sometimes create.

This will be the last newsletter article for the current Year 9 students as all Year 9’s will

move into Year 10 for Headstart.

In Clancy Bennett’s absence, I will be writing the Year 9 Update for the next few weeks,

so apologies if it is not as comprehensive as usual.

Celebration Day

Our Year 9’s have just arrived back from their celebration day where they have enjoyed laser tag, bowling, pizza lunch and a

film afternoon. They have had a great day celebrating their last day in Year 9.

Special Program

As parents and carers will now be aware, only some students will be undertaking VCE units in 2019.

Other students will either select an additional elective together with some literacy and numeracy support, or be in a special

skills program to enhance their literacy, numeracy, and general life skills. Students in this latter category will receive a letter

about this on Monday. The college has been fortunate to receive special funding for some students based on their Year 9

NAPLAN results to help build their reading skills.






Travel to University Campus for Students Undertaking VCE Units in 2019

All students must have returned their travel forms and permission forms before being

allowed to attend their VCE subjects at the University Campus. As these classes will

commence on Monday 3rd, these forms MUST be returned no later than before school

on Monday.

Last Thursday, any students doing a VCE class had their exam for the Unit Two subject

they studied this semester. We hope all goes well with the results for each student! This

week our Year 10 students completed their studies for the year and they completed

their Maths exam on Tuesday and their English exam on Wednesday.

We would like to wish all of the Year 10 students – Good Luck for your future

endeavours! We hope your future career path is all that you want it to be. Enjoy the next

two weeks in either VCAL or VCE.

The Year 10 formal took place at Morwell Football Club rooms in Travers St. The formal

ran from 6:30 – 10:00pm. We would like to thank Kat Carbone for all her organisation

and thank you to Qu Bar for their catering on the night. Huge thanks to our office staff

for serving the meals and helping with the clean-up. Thanks to the student formal

committee for all their work setting up for the evening. A great night was had by all! Have

a great Headstart Program and a fabulous 2019 at the Uni Campus!

Creative Writing

This week in Creative Writing students were offered a writing task requiring them to produce a

12 sentence story. However, the challenge was they needed to include 5 words that were

provided by me. Here is what Stephanie Savige wrote – her words were: dramatized, haughty,

ecstatic, quarrelsome and humanity

5 words | 12 sentences

A comparison between two people can be often be seen as dramatic. Depending on how

drastic you’re willing to make the two people will determine how people perceive you as a

writer. A light-hearted discussion between two people with opposing views can often be

dramatized. The new version of this could be a haughty, homophobic manly man is having an

argument with a girl who is ecstatic about the recent change in Australian law. Now do you

see how a discussion can become a quarrelsome argument? That man’s ego probably

became inflamed leading to anger. That girl probably cried when she got home. Faith in

humanity is lost. We can try and regain it but earth is going downhill. We have to remember

that argument wasn’t real. But things like that do happen. That’s where even though we’re told

it’s fake the faith doesn’t come back.

Attention ALL 2019 Year 11 and 12 students

Would you like to attend the Mt Hotham Camp in 2019?

Mt Hotham is a well-known ski resort approximately 4-5 hours drive from Churchill via Omeo. The main activities undertaken on the camp will be downhill skiing and/or snowboarding.

The camp will run from Sunday 7th July to Friday 12th July, 2019. Students must be at the University Campus bus stop at 10.00am on the Sunday. We intend to return to Kurnai College (University Campus) at approximately 9.00pm on the Friday. Students will be staying at a Ski Lodge located at the top of the mountain. The total cost of the camp will be approximately $1650.00 which includes:

Ski/Snowboard Hire including carve skis, boots and poles or board and boots

Transport to and from Mount Hotham

Students will need to pay a deposit of $300 if they would like to secure a position for the camp by 1/12/2018. We have organised a payment plan in an effort to give families the opportunity to finalise the full payment by 2.00pm on Friday 21st June, 2019. While we understand this is an expensive camp we strongly believe that this is the most economical way of giving students the opportunity to participate in Alpine Snow sports. All students who participate in this camp will come home exhausted and thoroughly satisfied with their experiences, bubbling with stories of the thrills and spills they encountered.

In order for this camp to proceed, we require a minimum of 20 students to attend and will cap the attendance at 25 students. In the event of us not receiving enough interest, we will have to cancel this camp and, in this instance only, your deposit will be refunded.

Students are expected to have a good behaviour history and an average or above average fitness level. Parents will be notified if their child is in danger of losing their invitation to camp due to poor behaviour at school. These decisions will be made by the Principal, in consultation with the advocate team and Camp Coordinator. Additional information will be provided to your child as time gets closer to ensure your child is properly equipped for the camp. Their safety and comfort will depend on this. If students don’t have the required equipment they may be able to borrow a snow jacket and pants or alternatively this clothing can be hired from Mt Hotham.

Ambulance membership is highly recommended as a trip in an ambulance from Mt Hotham can cost thousands of dollars if you are a non-member. We also recommend travel insurance for an additional cost.

Commencing in Headstart, Mr Chris Gretton will be teaching at Churchill and University Campuses; Mr Joseph Bonnici will teach at Morwell Campus and Mr Ian Hopkins will continue to teach at all three campuses. These changes have taken place as Joseph will be on Leave for all of Term 1 in 2019.

College Music Concert – Performance Review

Over sixty students from every campus of Kurnai College participated in the annual College Music Concert. The concert featured the ensembles and numerous soloists from each campus, followed by the College Based ensembles that consisted of students from each campus, then concluded by the massed item – where everyone performed as one the song Up Town Funk.

The concert demonstrated the diversity and uniqueness of the performance acts that exist at each campus as well as the strength and unity through the Combined items.

All in all this was an exceptional evening not only through the performance of our students, but also by the number of audience members remaining after the concert and socialising with each other.

Kurnai Idol Final - Results

This year was the 10th Anniversary of Kurnai Idol.

This was an exceptional event where quality was evident. Three vocal students from each campus performed two items of their choice – one being with a fellow Kurnai student accompanying them. The judges all complimented of the “high” standard and musical diversity they were exposed to through song choice and the standards set by the accompanists.

This years final consisted of previous winners with Gemma Brown having won the event in 2016 and Dakoda Jenkins winning last year. This final was sure to make some history.

All finalists (both vocalists and instrumentalists) received prizes for their efforts in the final. The prizes consisted of trophies, medallions and monetary vouchers.

The results are as follows

Runner ups –Tyler Roncari, Gabrielle Hines and Nathan Britt (University campus); Sienna Wood, Aaron Edwards, Nyoka Alemin and Sy Fraser (Morwell Campus); Madilyn Bryce and Bonnie Sykes (Churchill Campus);

3rd Place – Carmela Cardillo and Antonio Cardillo (Churchill Campus);

Each taking home a $50 voucher and trophy;

2nd Place – Gemma Brown and Milla Samson (Churchill Campus);

Each taking home a $75 voucher and trophy; and

1st Place – Dakoda Jenkins and Nathan Britt (University Campus);

Each taking home a $100 voucher and trophy PLUS their names engraved on the Kurnai Idol Champion Shield which will be housed at the University Campus in 2019.

Does your child have a current Asthma Action Plan or Anaphylaxis Management Plan?

Annual Update Anaphylaxis and Asthma Management Plans

Whilst your child is attending school and suffers from these medical conditions, it is your

responsibility each year to supply the school with updated medical information from your

family doctor. This information is retained by the school so that should a medical issue arise

the correct medical treatment is administered.

Please contact your family doctor to arrange an updated Management Plan as soon as pos-

sible. Once you have the plan please ensure that the school is given this information as

soon as possible.

MORWELL EAST FOOTBALL NETBALL CLUB

Morwell East Football Netball Club will commence pre-season Under 16 and Under 18 training on Monday 19th November at

6pm, there will be a BBQ and drinks following training.

The club has appointed a new senior coach, Devon Soutar from Morwell Football Netball Club and Devon is very keen to have

our juniors join in the senior training programme.

Junior coaches are the same as last year with Josh Donovan coaching Under 18's and Clinton Monds coaching Under 16's.

The club is keen to have our juniors commence training as early as possible so that we can have a good base for starting

season 2019.

If you have not played football before we also encourage new players to the club. Please contact the relevant coaches if you

have any questions.
