We would like to acknowledge two community champion

couples who have gone beyond what could be expected to make a difference and improve the quality of life in their community.

The Arc of San Diego’s premier fundraiser, The Jewels of San Diego Gala, originated in 2010 with the philanthropic generosity of Phyllis and John Parrish. Longtime supporters, they have put together an incredible lineup of Honorary Jewels Chairs and assisted with securing generous sponsorships. This year, the signature gala raised more than $80,000 after expenses. A special thank you to The Jewels of San Diego and Phyllis and John Parrish for a spectacular event.

Few rites of passage are more treasured than the high school prom. Rob and Cheryl Shields, founders of A Night to Remember Prom, were inspired to organize a San Diego prom for high school students with developmental disabilities after learning of a similar event in Rockford, Illinois.

Since 2011, they have raised funds to annually host a total prom experience at no cost to participants. This year, there were more than 800 students in attendance! Rob and Cheryl received a True Inspiration Award from Chick-fil-A Foundation in recognition of their work. At The Arc of San Diego, we are proud to be the fiscal sponsor for A Night to Remember Prom.

Remembering….Jewell Delores Hooper May 4, 1919 - April 12, 2016We are deeply saddened by the passing of Jewell D. Hooper, one of our dedicated supporters. Jewell served on our Board of Directors as well as the Advisory Board for City Chapter. In 2010 she received The Arc’s highest honor, The Frank B. Lalor Volunteer of the Year Award, for outstanding service.

Born in Morrilton, Arkansas, Ms. Hooper moved to San Diego in 1957. A retired accountant and community activist, she was widely known for her devotion to many civic and charitable causes.

Jewell was a member of the League of Women Voters, taught driver safety classes to seniors through AARP for 20 years, served on the Police Department’s Retired Senior Volunteer Patrol (RSVP), and volunteered at the Fourth District Seniors Resource Center and Tubman-Chavez Multicultural Family & Youth Center.

Active on planning groups for Southeast San Diego, Broadway Heights, and Valencia Park, Jewell was involved in the preservation of the Barrio Logan murals, construction of I-805 ramps from Southeast San Diego neighborhoods, and blocking dense apartment housing in Broadway Heights. Her proudest achievement was a 10-year fight to successfully block the Highway 252 project, which would have split the Southcrest neighborhood and uprooted many families.

In 2014, Jewell received San Diego's Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Human Dignity Award for her public service, for leadership in community development, voter registration, political activism, and senior education.

Keeping The PromiseAfter three years of advocacy by The Arc of San Diego, The Lanterman Coalition, and other service providers, Governor Jerry Brown signed ABX2-1 appropriating more than $300 million in additional funding for the developmental disability population.

As of July 1, 2016, ABX2-1 will provide for two types of increases in funding between Regional Centers and most service providers - 5 percent for supported and independent living, transportation, and in-home respite services for people with developmental disabilities and 7.5 percent for direct care staff wages/benefits and administration of services.

The Arc of San Diego consumers, families, staff, and providers actively participated in letter writing campaigns and held three protest rallies outside legislators’ downtown offices to challenge the state budget and ensure basic needs of Californians with developmental disabilities were met. California’s disability community has struggled with underfunding since 1999.

Assemblymember Brian Maienschein of the 77th District was one of five lead authors of ABX2-1 which passed with bipartisan support. We thank Assemblymember Maienschein, who since taking office in 2012 has made improving conditions for our community a priority, carrying legislation and supporting an increase in funding through the budget process.

Honoring LeadershipThe Arc San Diego Foundation held its Annual Meeting & Recognition Luncheon on June 22nd at Bertrand at Mister A’s. The event is also an opportunity to recognize individuals and businesses for their valuable contributions to The Arc of San Diego.

The Circle of Light Gold Award, acknowledging donors who contribute over $500,000, was presented to the South Bay Chapter Advisory Board. Founded in 1959, the Chapter has a long history of supporting The Sol and Ruth Gerber Family Center in Chula Vista, raising funds for capital improvements and programs, and, most recently, making significant contributions to the center’s capital campaign.

The Circle of Light Silver Award, recognizing those who contribute between $100,000- $500,000, was given to North County Chapter Advisory Board for its leadership over the past 49 years of Arc North County and its generous support of capital, vehicle, and program needs.

The Circle of Light Bronze Award for contributions between $25,000- $100,000 was awarded to Frank and Kat Sciacca and Wawanesa Insurance. The Sciaccas have supported the Foundation for more than 20 years, particularly the Holiday Golf Tournament which provides holiday gifts for consumers and Our Place Yoga and Wellness Center. Wawanesa Insurance, a supporter of The Arc for the past 14 years, has contributed to the Jewels of San Diego Gala as well as capital campaigns for Sulpizio Family and The Sol and Ruth Gerber Family Centers.

The Jewels of San Diego 2016 Gala - America's Finest City was an incredible evening filled with excitement and enthusiasm. The

prestigious black-tie event, emceed by Kimberly Hunt, ABC/10 News anchor, featured cocktail reception, amazing silent and live auctions with unique items, exquisite dining, and dancing to electrifying performances by Wayne Foster Music & Entertainment. Yosemite National ParkFour clients took a trip to Yosemite National Park with The Arc's Leisure Express Trip and Travel. It was a beautiful time of year to see the park and its spectacular views. A ranger tour of Yosemite Valley pointed specific sights and provided commentary about the park’s history, geology of rock formations, plant and wildlife. Stops at Half Dome and El Capitan as well as breath-taking views of towering granite cliffs and majestic waterfalls made for a remarkable day of sightseeing and a memorable outing.

The Arc’s Leisure Express Trip and Travel offers quality vacations for teens and adults with disabilities. The program is staffed at one chaperone to three or four travelers. Cost includes accommodations, activities, meals, transportation from designated locations, tour guides, and tips. Beyond LimitsIn observance of Disability Awareness Month in March, The Arc of San Diego hosted a presentation at the Mission Valley Library featuring guest speaker Bonner Paddock of Laguna Beach. Sixty guests in attendance heard a message that was moving, inspiring, and motivational.

Bonner, who has cerebral palsy, shared his life story, both accomplishments and difficulties. In 2008, at 33, after 11 months of strenuous training, he climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro which was documented in the film Beyond Limits. Four years later, he completed the grueling Kona Ironman, a 26.2 mile marathon, 112 mile bike ride, and 2.4 mile swim in 16 hours, 38 minutes, 35 seconds. Last year, his book, One More Step, became a New York Times Best Seller. Bonner is the founder of OM Foundation, a nonprofit that helps children with disabilities.

A Night to Remember Prom held April 29 at Eastlake Church Chula Vista was a glittering success!! More than 800 students attended the prom honoring students with disabilities ages 15-22. The event provides star treatment with makeup, hairstyling, tuxes, gowns, corsages, boutonnieres, limo rides, red carpet, music and dancing for an experience of a lifetime at no cost to participants.

The Arc of San Diego is proud to be the fiscal sponsor of the sixth annual A Night to Remember Prom. Founded in 2011 by Rob and Cheryl Shields, this event ensures students with disabilities experience one of the highlights in every teenager’s life - a magical prom filled with glitz and glamour.

Riding the Wave of ChangeThe 26th annual San Diego People First Self-Advocacy Conference held June 3-4, 2016 at the San Diego Mission Valley Marriott was an exciting event.

The conference provides a forum for sharing information and ideas. Workshop topics included new and upcoming legislative and service changes, power of voting, changing your IPP, and employment and self-determination.

More than 300 people attended the two-day event for self-advocates age 18 and over, agency staff, and family members. The Arc of San Diego had a contingency of 30 clients and staff.

Arc clients Steve Kerwood (Sulpizio), Karen Maier and Sandy Fowler (Gerber), Arianna Gulick (Arc Enterprises, John Towers) and Gail Persky (East County) presented a panel discussion, “The Six Steps to Approach a Legislator.”

Waves of ChangeThe Arc of San Diego’s Annual Meeting & Installation Ceremony held June 3rd at Tom Ham’s Lighthouse featured an awards ceremony and installation of the 2016-17 Board of Directors.

Cynthia Huff received the coveted Frank B. Lalor Award, honoring individuals who exemplify the true spirit of volunteerism, loyalty, commitment, and distinguished service. Dr. Paul Kurtin and Jim Reynolds were awarded the President’s Volunteer Service Award for exemplary service to The Arc. Awards were presented to our consumers and staff in recognition of contributions to our organization. As a token of appreciation, consumers, staff, and volunteers received Certificates of Recognition from Congressman Juan Vargas and California State Senator Patricia Bates.

Summer Magic!It is time for summer camp! And, here at Camp-A-Lot/Camp-A-Little, we are busy with preparations for an exciting summer of adventure, friendship, and memories. For 52 years, we have been committed to making it possible for children and adults with disabilities to experience and value the great outdoors.

However, many of our campers need your help. Each camper has to raise approximately $1,180 to attend a five day session in Descanso. This can be difficult for those coming from single parent homes, those living with aging parents on limited incomes or in residential homes with no family, and those who save all year long so they can “go to camp” but need a little help.

For all our campers, camp is more than just a week of activities under the supervision of counselors. It is a time when they will discover themselves as they try new activities, gain confidence while learning to problem solve, and make lifelong friendships as they meet and get along with others. They will follow age-old camp traditions: sit around the campfire, sing camp songs, explore nature, swim, hike, ride bikes, laugh, cheer, and be themselves in a nurturing environment.

Please consider making a donation so our campers, especially those who are unable to attend due to financial constraints, can experience an unforgettable summer. A gift in any amount can go a long way in providing a scholarship, purchasing supplies and equipment, or providing transportation to and from camp.
