It is my pleasure, on behalf of the Board of Directors of SMFA, to bring greetings to our District Festivals, volunteers, and participants. The Saskatchewan Music Festival Association has a long and rich history of promoting musical excellence. We believe that music and speech arts enrich our

world. Performers, teachers, conductors, volunteers, audience members, and adjudicators each have a vital role to play in promoting music in our community and throughout our province. We are grateful for the funding we receive from the Lotteries Trust Fund for Sport, Culture, and Recreation administered by SaskCulture Inc. Their generous financial support allows the tradition of music festivals, established in this province in 1908, to continue to flourish today. Our Festivals would not be possible without the dedicated volunteers who give freely of their time and from their hearts. Please take a moment to show your appreciation to the members of your local festival committee for their commitment and hard work.

Wishing you all the best for a successful and rewarding Music Festival of 2017!

Karen Unger, SMFA President

He went on to complete six credits of post grad work at the University of Saskatchewan, with Marvin Eckroth and Margaret Wilson. These courses were transferred to Northwestern State University in Louisiana, where he completed a M.M. in 1998.

As a member of the Board of SMEA, he chaired the Provincial SMEA Convention in 1991 and has coordinated the SMEA Honour Groups five different years. SMEA awarded Gene the Outstanding Achievement Award in 1996, and SMEA Honourary Life Membership in 2005.

Gene has also served on the Board of the Saskatchewan Band Association, serving on the Music Advocate Committee. He was the coordinator of the SBA Summer Band Camp at North Battleford from 1986 until 1991. Gene received the SBA Distinguished Band Director Award in 2005. In 2006 and 2010, he was a guest presenter at the Sask. Music Conference.

North Battleford groups have given performances and been selected as a demonstration group for clinicians and speakers at several Sask. Music Conferences. The North Battleford Band, combined with the band from Salisbury Composite in Sherwood Park, performed at two conferences, as well as premiering the commissioned work, “Riel”, written by Mr. Benson.

Gene has adjudicated festivals and led workshops in Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Wisconsin and Louisiana. During these events, his goal has been to create an appreciation of music and performing. He has performed several recitals on clarinet of nineteenth and twentieth century literature, and has recently been a guest performer with the Gallery Singers, the Kinsmen Senior Band, Battlefords Sax Quartet, Battlefords Clarinet Quartet.

deborah buck Saskatoon’s Deborah Buck combines her love of music and theatre in a unique freelance career. A collaborative pianist, she has accompanied ensembles such as the University of Saskatchewan Greystone Singers and Saskatoon Chamber Singers, and performed and recorded with many solo artists; she’s also served as Saskatchewan’s official accompanist at the National Music Festival and been a répétiteur for Saskatoon Opera. A mezzo-soprano, she’s been a guest soloist with groups such as Saskatoon Choral Society and Saskatoon Men’s Chorus; since 2005 she has travelled Canada singing with the Juno-nominated Canadian Chamber Choir. Deborah has been chorus director for Saskatoon Opera Association, and currently conducts the Saskatoon Men’s Chorus and a combined Anglican-Lutheran choir at her church.

A musical director of more than 60 professional musicals, Deborah has been nominated for several Saskatoon and Area Theatre Awards, receiving the “SATA” for Outstanding Contribution to Theatre in 2008 and another in 2010 for her “body of work” during that season. She has also performed numerous singer-actor roles for Saskatoon’s Persephone Theatre, Souris Valley Theatre, Station Arts Centre, Dancing Sky Theatre, and Rosebud Theatre in Rosebud, Alberta, where she was Artist-in-Residence.

In addition to teaching voice and piano privately, she has taught at the Globe Theatre Acting Conservatory (Regina), Persephone Theatre School, and Rosebud School of the Arts, and directed music for the student musicals at the U. of S. Department of Drama. She always looks forward to engaging with this province’s young musicians as an adjudicator with the Saskatchewan Music Festival Association.
