Dear Families,

Students continue to focus on their work and try their very best, as we head into the final months of the school year. It is still so important to continue reading with your child every evening! Thank you so much for your support and for all that you do in helping your child succeed at school!

Spring means field trips to many interesting places. It is important for all children to attend because these outings are valuable learning experiences that support what your child has learned in the classroom. On the day of the field trip remember to dress your child for the weather and in comfortable clothing…especially for those outdoor experiences. You may also need to send your child

FRENCH IMMERSION PROGRAM

At

École Victoria-Albert School

A French Immersion Kindergarten, Grade 1, Grade 2, Grade 3, Grade 4 and Grade 5 will be offered at École

Victoria-Albert School in September 2016. This program was created in response to the growing student

enrolment in French Immersion. The program will continue to expand and will include Grade 6 by the 2018-

2019 school year. Our French Immersion catchment area includes the following schools:

* Cecil Rhodes School * Clifton School * École Sacré-Coeur

* Fort Rouge School * John M. King School * Pinkham School

* Principal Sparling School * Sargent Park School * Sister MacNamara School

* Wellington School * Weston School * Dufferin School

Bussing is available for students who live in our French Immersion catchment area and who are 1.6

kilometers or further away from the school.

WE ARE NOW REGISTERING STUDENTS FOR NURSERY & KINDERGARTEN

2017/2018 SCHOOL YEAR

To register please bring your lease agreement or tax bill along with your Manitoba Health Card. If

you are new to Canada, please bring your Landed Immigration documents.

Children who will be 5 years old by December 31, 2017 are eligible for Kindergarten class. Children who will be 4 years old by December 31, 2017 are eligible for Nursery class.

Children who attended Nursery this year will be given preference for Kindergarten for September.

Please come to the school office to register your child between 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.

We listened to the story " The Very Hungry Caterpillar"

by Eric Carle. Then as part of a Math center we finger

painted the caterpillar bodies according to the number.

The numbers ranged from 1-10. Here we are making 7

fingerprints with green paint for the 7th caterpillar. We

did this for all the 10 caterpillars. Of course the 10th

caterpillar was the longest!

This month in the morning and afternoon classes, the students in Room 123 have been

learning about fish. We have continued to find fun ways to recognize alphabet letters

and spell words. We are learning to add groups of numbers, read simple books and

write stories. The children enjoyed painting their fish to go on our bulletin board in

the classroom.

French Immersion

We have been learning to sing a Spring song called "Si tu aimes

le soleil".

The song involves performing action words. Here we are singing

the song and touching the ceiling (touche le plafond). We have

lots of fun performing different actions and learning the name of

the actions in French. The English version is the song" If you are

happy and you know it".

We have been learning about Spring in room 7. We have been working on learning

new French vocabulary for all of the things we see in the Springtime. We know the

French words for all of our Spring clothing, the weather, flowers, and all kinds of

insects! We have read a lot of books on insects and learned about their life cycles.

We even made our favourite bugs and insects out of modelling clay.

We have also learned about all of the new things that come alive in Spring and

about planting a beautiful and colourful garden that will attract butterflies. We

made our own painted paper and ‘planted’ a spring garden in our hallway by

making flowers, birds, butterflies, and insects out of our paper. It was good

practice for us because we will be planting a live butterfly garden in the school

yard later this Spring. Stop by just outside our classroom to see our rainbow

garden.

As the weather gets warmer and the seasons change from winter to spring, the students in room

13 continue to learn about animals and living things. The students eagerly made nests outside for

birds to make their homes in. The class is learning about the different things that living things need

in order to grow and be healthy. We gathered branches from outside so that we could make an

experiment to see if water would cause leaves to grow out of the buds that had formed on the

branches. Here are the children drawing the changes that we saw happening as the branches used

the water we put them in!

Nursery

For the month of April room 122 A.M. has been studying under sea animals. We have been reading

a lot of books about all kinds of sea animals. We have been learning numbers and letters with our

sea animals too. The students have been working every day to add to our mural and to find a

deeper understanding of the sea animals through art, stories, and video.

French Immersion

In Room 8 we have had a fantastic start to Spring! During our Water and Air inquiry we learned

about the water cycle, how water is transported to our taps, how to keep water and the Earth

clean, and that many communities like some First Nations reserves do not have clean water. On

World Water Day, the students decided that it was important for us to write letters to our

Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau. We worked very hard to write persuasive letters and went for a

walk to send them in the mail! We are hoping that one day all communities in Canada will have

access to clean drinking water. Next up to discover in our classroom learning: endangered

animals!

Ms. Grimolfson

Grade 1/2

We have had a very productive and enjoyable learning month! The students have been working

hard to improve their reading and writing skills. They have been learning to write personal stories

using a beginning, middle, and end. They have been learning to check their writing by reading it to

make sure it makes sense and revising by adding more details to their writing and pictures. The

students have also been creating their own books and sharing them with each other.

The students have been working on math investigations to learn and use math

strategies as well as to develop their problem solving skills. The investigations also

give the students the opportunity to work together and figure out which math

strategies to use to solve problems using real life situations.

Mrs. Hardman

Room 21

Grade 2

We have accomplished many things in our class over the past couple of months!

The most important one was completing and publishing our Small Moments Stories.

On Thursday, March 16th, we had a Book Release Party to celebrate our

accomplishments and share our stories with other adults in the school. We were

thrilled when approximately 16 different adults turned out to hear us read our

stories. We enjoyed a fancy snack and Mrs. Hardman “toasted” our hard work with

some punch in wine glasses, just like real authors would have! It was a great time!

We have continued our writing by learning about Canadian animals and writing

stories that tell important facts about those animals. We made some really cool

black glue, chalk and paint art to go with them. Come by Room 21 and check out all

our hard work! The school year is rapidly coming to an end, and we continue to

push hard in our learning until the very end. Please keep practicing reading on a daily

basis with your child and reviewing the word cards they bring home every second

week. By working together, we can help our kids become the best they can be as

they head to Grade 3!

Room 23

Grade 3

The grade 3 students in room 23 have been learning about Canada, including animals that live in

Canada. We were very excited to have 2 owl ambassadors from PWRC (Prairie Wildlife Rehab

Centre) visit our classroom! PWRC brought Canada’s largest owl, Great Grey Owl, and Canada’s

smallest owl, Saw-Whet Owl. It was an amazing experience to see two Canadian animals up close!

The children learned some amazing things about these two owls. It was an experience they may

never forget.

Grade 3

French Immersion

Room 15 is working hard writing scripts for a

puppet show! Students are learning how to

write scripts and dialogue. Once they finish

writing the script they will make puppets and

perform the show for their classmates.

Room 22 has been busy and having lots of fun! We are practicing our design, collaboration, and

active listening skills while creating a model of the Tegallalang Rice Fields in Bali! We explored

properties of water and air in Science and created miniature clouds right in the classroom! In Math

we completed the Beads and Shoes investigation which focused on doubles and pairs. In ELA we are

working hard to reach our reading goals by the end of the year.

French Immersion

Over the course of the last month, we have been learning about rocks, minerals, and fossils. We

have explored many different rock samples, books, websites, watched videos, and travelled to the

Manitoba Museum.

We also had some very special guests in our classroom. Representatives from the Prairie Wildlife

Rehabilitation Centre brought a great gray owl and a barred owl to the class. The students loved

seeing these magnificent owls up close and personal, and if was a great way to learn about them and

their habitat.

Room 24 has been learning about persuasive writing. We think about our audience and want to

convince them to think and feel the way we do about our topic. We are using webs to organize

our writing, conferencing with friends to gather ideas and choosing our lead sentence carefully to

hook our audience. We can't wait to share our finished writing to our audience!

Room 16 went on a French and Math egg hunt! Students found the answers

to multiplication problems and gathered letters hidden in eggs around the classroom

to solve a mystery message. "Va voir Mme Mona. Elle a un cadeau pour toi!" Can you

solve this message?

Congratulations to four students from room 16, Faith, Jayde, Beth and Brooklynn,

who were in the top 10 of a world wide engineering challenge, "Follow the Flow

Engineering Challenge"!

Mr. Seguin

Room 18

Grade 5

In room 18 we have been learning about Forces and Simple Machines. There are 6 simple machines

and we are putting them together to make Rube Goldberg machines! Make sure you ask about how

they work! In Math, we have explored how to tell time using analog and digital clocks, as well as what

it means to say “quarter to ten” and “quarter past 3”. It’s real life math!

Ms. Roth

Room 20

Grade 5/6

Have you ever wondered why an ostrich has a long neck? People have been making up stories

to explain strange things for a long, long time. Our class has been listening to and writing

“Pourquoi” stories (why stories). The challenge is to use what we are learning about writing

to create really interesting stories.

When we were not writing stories or doing math, we were getting ready for the spring musi-

cal, The Best Little Theatre in Town! We practiced our dancing until we were ready to per-

form. We also got really good at singing and dancing with a top hat! We learned to keep try-

ing and when we finally performed on stage it went very well.

In Room 20 we continue to learn in many ways and take opportunities to experience lots of

things. We walked to the Winnipeg Art Gallery for a tour of Contemporary Inuit Art. Besides

looking at numerous pieces of art, students also engaged in hand-on activities.

In order to continue building our class communication, creativity, collaboration and critical thinking

skills, students participate in challenges where they must work together in a short amount of time to

create something.

We are looking forward to many other opportunities this spring including another trip to camp as

well as a tour of the Canadian Museum for Human Rights.

Wi-Wabigooni

The students at Wi Wabigooni had so much fun at Winter Camp! None

of them were ready to leave when it was time. For three days, the

students got to play and learn at the Red Rock Camp in the Whiteshell

Provincial Park. Their favorite activity was Tube-sliding but they also

skated and played broomball, went cross-country skiing and made

offerings with tobacco bundles after a smudge.

MUSIC

Thank you all for coming to our spring concert “The Best Little Theater in Town”.

The students worked extremely hard and did a fabulous job of acting, dancing, singing, and making sets and props.

Now we look forward to spring when the Honour Choir will put on a concert, and we will be dancing, singing, and

playing instruments with a spring theme.

FRENCH

C’est le printemps! It’s spring! In French class we will be learning vocabulary, songs and games to go along with a

spring theme. It’s time to celebrate the best season of the year!

Spring is in the air... finally! And it's a great time to learn about all

things outdoors. We have started planting vegetables for our

community garden in our playground. Feel free to stop by this

summer and enjoy some fresh veggies or feel free to pick weeds if

you have an urge!

We will be learning about Light in our next science unit and will be

connecting this to how light is an important component to growing

plants indoors and outside. We are also graphing how our plants are

growing; measuring them weekly. It was SO exciting when the first

plant poked out of the dirt.

hand. So far, Hayman leads all boys with 75 points in round three, followed by Donor with 63

points, Dail with 56 and Jerson with 54 points. Lois leads all girls with 41 points, followed by

Jiliane with 34 , Brenda with 26 and Dakota with 24 points.

Victoria Albert Marathon Running Club

On the last week of April our students will began “pounding the pavement” in preparation for this

year’s Super Run at the Manitoba Marathon on June 18th, 2017. Our students will be running three

mornings each week beginning at 8:00 a.m. After two months of training, our students will be in shape

to comfortably complete the Super Run in June.

This year marks the 39th anniversary of the Manitoba Marathon.

Victoria Albert Ultimate Football

In late May/early June, our school team of Ultimate Football players will head out to Tec Voc for the

Annual Central Division championships. Our two teams are comprised of boys and girls in grades 5 and

6. Practices will begin in May.

Juggling Burst Club

Thanks to the continued generosity of the Laura Milner White Foundation, our school has acquired a

range of juggling balls to start up the Annual Victoria Albert Juggling Club. Learning how to juggle is

a fun exercise and being able to juggle is wonderful thing to be able to do. The juggling Club will begin

action in mid-May. If you don’t know how to juggle but always wanted to learn...this is the club for

you!

Coming up in May: Intramural Badminton, Ultimate Football, Juggling Club Running Club,

Track, mini-tennis, jump rope
