Dear Parents, Guardians, Staff & Students,

This term like most terms continues to pass quickly. Our confirmed enrolments to date are 748 students. All students have settled in well in both primary and secondary areas and are enjoying the challenging opportunities provided to them in all year levels. A special welcome to our new families who have enrolled their children at Timbarra this term. We have a wonderful staff who always make our new students feel welcome and safe. Our Student Leadership Teams are enjoying taking on new responsibilities across the College and our primary leadership team are facilitating the primary Friday assemblies with confidence and ease. Well done. Thank you to parents and family members who come along to these fortnightly assemblies to share and acknowledge student achievements. It can be especially difficult for working parents so our whole school events and special evening events are another opportunity for you to support your child. We have held two very successful ‘open mornings’ in the past two weeks for both our Timbarra parents and the wider community to see our Secondary College ‘in action’ with over 80 visitors attending. We are proud to welcome visitors into our College and share information about our programs and how we cater for the academic, social, emotional and physical needs of our students. Our well maintained contemporary facilities provide a wonderful environment for teaching and learning. It was a lovely opportunity to chat to parents and share in a morning tea and question session on completion of the tours. Congratulations to the 25 parents/guardians who participated in the 2019 Classroom Helpers program. Thank you very much to Donna Brown and Janene Richardson for providing this valuable information for our parents, it further strengthens the partnership between school and home. Our classroom helpers are greatly valued by staff and students, who are always excited to share their work. Last Thursday school photos ran very smoothly, staff photos including administration staff, followed by all grades/homerooms then family photos. Thank you to Kelsea (office) and Jessica Mills for ensuring the day ran without any interruptions. We anticipate photos will be sent to the school in approximately four weeks for distribution to families. Due to a full curriculum we celebrated Harmony Day early this year on Friday March the 8th. Staff and students wore a ‘splash of orange’ and we all celebrated a day where ‘everyone belongs’. There was much to celebrate as can be seen from the class pages in this newsletter. During Term 1, 3 and 4 this year the staff and students at Timbarra are fortunate to be working with Mathematics consultant Rob Vingerhoets. Rob is an experienced and highly regarded teacher and educator who is focused on engaging students in their Mathematics learning. His work is mainly in classrooms with classroom teachers. He has modelled, coached and planned with teachers in State, Catholic and Independent schools and with students from Prep to Year 10. He works across Melbourne, throughout Victoria, interstate

and overseas. The Year 5-6’s had a great day out at the Lightning Premiership Sport Day on Tuesday, the first competition of the year. The teachers were very impressed with the sportsmanship displayed and the respectful behaviour of all students throughout the day. In addition, the Year 6’s are looking forward to their upcoming excursion to the Scienceworks museum in Spotswood. As part of their Inquiry Based Unit science topic ‘Change Happens’ students will participate in presentations titled Energy Lab – Cool Stuff and Lightning and Safety. Scienceworks is always a favourite excursion destination! On the other hand, the Year 3-4 students are having a Science show and workshops facilitated at school, titled, Tick, Tick, Boom! The Year 3’s will participate in workshops titled ‘Properties of Materials’, and the Year 4’s will participate in workshops titled Forces, Fiction and Movement. Science experiments are perfect way for children to become more aware about how the world around them works. Last week the learning spaces were set up like scientific labs and the students were having an absolute ball having access to all the ‘hands on learning’. I think the teachers were having a great time too! The Indonesian and Science Faculties are joining together for an excursion to the Melbourne Zoo in the next few weeks for our Year 8 and Year 9 students. Students will be studying animal structures and how this affects their body systems and organ placements. Learning opportunities continue beyond the school grounds and teachers seek out programs and venues that complement the unit of work and the curriculum that they teach in class. Our Year 9 students have completed their on line Vocational testing and are now currently undertaking Career Counselling sessions with Jen Shultz (qualified career consultant) and their parents. We continue to receive excellent feedback on this service and it has provided clear pathways for the majority of our students. It really does set us apart from other neighbourhood schools as students make an informed choice of subjects related to career paths. Interviews are taking place in the main office on Friday mornings. Updates are being sent through our Skoolbag App. A SunSmart reminder, that during Term 1 and 4 all students are to wear an approved hat during recess, lunch, PE, Sport and any other outdoor activities. The April Vacation Care Program is now out! You will need to pick a Booking Form up from the OSHC Program situated in the small Gym, and you will have 2 weeks to book in. No Bookings or Cancelations will be taken after; Friday, 29th March 2019 as we need numbers confirmed to organise; food, materials, staff, etc... If you have never enrolled your child/ren into the OSHC Program, you will not be able to Book your child/ren into the Vacation Care Program until this has been done. The Vacation Care Booking Form is different from the Enrolment process, so if you have any questions please contact us on; 9 705 7400 or come in and speak to us at the OSHC Program between the hours of; 7am – 9am OR 3pm – 6pm / Monday to Friday. COMPLYING WRITTEN ARRAGEMENTS UPDATE– (IMPORTANT) By now you would have been sent an Email asking you to review the information and ‘Acknowledge’ your CWA - (Complying Written Arrangement). This is a legal requirement under the new Child Care Subsidy rules that an arrangement for care must be agreed between the Service and the ‘Individual’ (designated parent 1) for each enrolment for you to receive Child Care Subsidy. If you have a permanent booking for your child, each time you change your booking details (EG: you need new permanent days), a new CWA will be sent to you that you must ‘Acknowledge’ to keep receiving your CCS. NOTE: This does not apply to casual bookings. Please check your Emails and read the CWA properly before clicking on the blue ‘Acknowledge’ button at the bottom of the Email. If any of the details are incorrect, please let us know and we will send you an updated CWA. COLLECTING PLASTIC MILK BOTTLE TOPS, PAPER TOWEL ROLLS AND BREAD TIES OSHC is collecting plastic milk bottle tops, paper towel rolls and bread ties for our sustainability program. HARMONY DAY YEAR 5 & 6

On Harmony Day we had to write inside a hand about what makes us special. Afterwards we had to colour it

in. Riley read a nice book about Harmony day. Ava 5C

Today we did activities where you draw henna prints on hand.

We did traditional games to teach us about other countries

activities. Densiel 6J We celebrated Harmony Day by doing different

activities. Our whole class did fun activities and we

ate chocolate! Grace B 5M

On Harmony Day Lacey and I completed a word search and family

tree. We had such a fun day and I can’t wait for 2020 Harmony day.

I enjoyed cooking on Harmony Day. We worked in partners and made nachos with guacamole. The other activities were sport, origami and drawing.

My favourite activity was cooking. Maryam 6W

I really enjoyed doing origami with Mr H. I taught Mr H and

some other friends how to make a paper-made balloon. Only

some of us managed to blow it up properly.

I loved drawing on our hands and writing things we liked. We also wrote about who we are and what country our families came from. We wore a splash of orange and I wore my mum’s orange

scarf. Harmony Day is about respecting who we are and accepting other peo-
