Commodore’s December 2012 Bow Watch

Our members did their usual stellar job for our Change of Watch Party on November 10. It

wouldn’t feel like the real thing without Buddy and Davis Yoakum serving up roasted oysters by the

shovel full to eagerly waiting patrons around the tables in the yard. And Susan Cosby and her Auxil-

iary Committee crew did an outstanding job with the other food and fun. Thank you to all who

pitched in so readily. And congratulations to the winners of our club awards for the year. In case you

missed it, the following were recognized for outstand-

ing accomplishments this year.

John Potter once again proved his hold on the top

sailing award by winning the JY-15 North American Championship held at our club the same week-

end. There were many former JY-15 champions in the fleet, but John sets the standard almost any-

where he sails and in almost any kind of boat. Congratulations, John. And thank you to Frank Pon-

tious and his race committee who put on a great regatta in spite of not so great breezes.

We also recognized your new officers for 2013 and passed the torch to our new leaders.

Walt Gnann- Treasurer

Frank Pontious- Fleet Captain

Please congratulate them and give them your full support for next year.

We are also so pleased to welcome Milledge Webb as our new General Manager. Milledge will

join us effective December 3. Drop by the club to introduce yourselves to Milledge. We are delight-

ed to have someone of his capabilities to join us. But I especially want to thank David Dixon for fill-

ing in as our interim GM for the last few weeks. In his typical fashion, David has kept things running

smoothly and I appreciate what he has done and will continue to do for BYSC.

As we pass Thanksgiving and head toward Christmas and the New Year, Betsy and I want to wish

each of you a wonderful and blessed holiday season. It has been my privilege to serve as your com-

modore this year. BYSC has a bright future. You are a wonderful group of people to be associated

AUXILIARY COMMITTEE REPORT

“To the promote social enjoyment, fellowship, and the general welfare and beauti-fication of the Beaufort Yacht & Sailing Club”

Christmas is not far away and the Auxiliary has the perfect solution to some of your present

buying quandaries. There is some wonderful new Fall/Winter BYSC logo’d Clothing & Merchandise that has been added to the summer line available. Limited stock is available through the office, and items are also available to order through our website. DON’T DELAY. SHOP TODAY!

Many thanks to all the Auxiliary members who supported the onshore activities of the JY15

North American Championship AND the Change of Watch Party. Although many people helped, I like to recognize and thank a few of the main onshore organizers: Susan Cosby for coordinating the Change of Watch. Steve Weeks for doing JY15 breakfasts. Nancy Day for doing lunches. And Ricky Akers for doing the dinner on Sunday night. The club once again got rave reviews for our hospitality!

If you have visited the Ladies Restroom in the clubhouse lately you will see that a “spruce-up”

is underway. Many thanks to Paula Sullivan and Henry Potts! Our second Steak Night was another big success. Jim Travis got the top grade steaks. Re-

ports are that they were even better than the first months. For set up and cooking help, anoth-er big thanks to Jim & Maureen Travis, Kay & Phil Newsome, John & Cheryl Potter, Sam Levin, Larry Hamilton and Renee and David Dillinger. There will be no Steak Night in December, due to so many parties already that month, but it will resume going forward the second Wednesday of each month.

December’s Auxiliary Meeting is also cancelled so that members can concentrate on Christmas.

Our next meeting will be Thursday, January 17th at 6pm. Whether you are a new member or old, this is a great way to meet new friends and get involved

in making your club the best ever. The meetings are always very social and fun in nature and eve-ryone is welcome.

See you there! Sue Hamilton, President, BYSC Auxiliary Board: Lisa Presnell, Vice-President; Angie Williams, Secretary; Kristi Rushing; Treasurer;

Carey Kerney, Social; Nelson Brown, Board Member

HIGH SCHOOL SAILING REGATTA, NOVEMBER 3, 2013 REGATTA HIGHLIGHTS

Fourteen schools were represented at NPLC#1 the weekend of November 3rd on the Medway

River in Sunbury GA. Teams arrived to find a very light 4—5 kt NW breeze. The race commit-tee got on station early and started on time as the weather report for the rest of the day was not good. Two races in each division were completed by about 11:30 when the wind shut off. A Division was sent to shore to wait. A very light thermal wind developed very close to shore so A Division was pretty quickly sent back out on the water. By the time all boats were back on the water the sea breeze filled in out of the east at about 7—10 kts and racing resumed. Seven races were completed in each division and sailors were off the water at 5 pm.

Beaufort Academy went home with their first win ever in High School competition. Congrat-ulations to Beaufort Academy!! Many 8th graders were in on the action and two JV teams com-peted. All competitors enjoyed the hospitalities on shore.

Do you remember this?

A reminder to our pet owners. Please make sure your pets

are always on a leash, per club policy, and that you clean up

after your pet leaves a deposit on club grounds.

Many thanks,

David
