President's MessageBy Sylvia Corbin
Canyon EchoesJUNE 2019
June is always a busy month for me, filled with completing quilts for graduations and birthday celebrations. I have a very large family and with that comes four high school graduations, one college graduation, and several landmark birthday celebra-tions. I’m grateful to be a quilter, as are my family members that receive my heartfelt gifts of quilts. It brings me joy to know that they appreciate, and “use” the quilts that I gift them. I especially like gifting my quilts for the soon to be college stu-
dent that will be living in the dorms, and that my quilts will be the envy of their friends.
This last month has been a busy time for Canyon Board and committee mem-bers. The 2 day workshop with Phyllis Cullen was a great success, as was her lecture on her prolific life of amazing quilts. Committee members have been ac-tively preparing for our summer Fund Raiser “Country Fair," as well as boosting our support for the Warrior Foundation, and kick starting our Quilt Challenge of “Game Night.” Many hours of volunteer work goes on behind the scenes to continue to make Canyon Quilters Guild as creative and educational for all those that attend. I hope you will consider taking an active role in contributing to our great team of Board members and Volunteers. I truly have been enjoying being part of this fun and creative Team. Thank you for the opportunity to serve as your President for the 2018-2019 year

Join the barn quilt movement by creating your own painted quilt block. You will begin with a preprimed board and go through each step drafting, taping, and painting, with careful attention to detail. The work-shop lasts about 4 hours.
You will leave with a finished quilt block or with one last color (which will be provided) to add at home. Ready for show and tell at your next meeting!

Canyon Quilt Challenge
2019 "GAME NIGHT"
Game night was always a fun way to end the work week. Whether we were at the
kitchen table with Risk, Monopoly or Clue it was an opportunity for one of the kids
to take over the world or accuse one of us of making bad choices in the library with
the candlestick, who knew Mrs. Peacock was capable of such things? This challenge
is our chance to recreate a family tradition, share unspeakable fun (Taboo), discov-
ery, settlement & trade (The Settlers of Catan), the Magical world of words (Disney
Family Cranium) or mix In the chaos, stir in the fun! (Bananagrams).
Let’s have some fun, join in the games and let’s see who wins…
Pick up a form at the next meeting, fill it out, pay your $5 and PLAY!

Phyllis Cullen's 2 day workshop was so creative and inspiring. Most stu-dents were able to complete piecing 2 landscape quilts over this 2 day workshop week-end. Yes, it's hard to believe, but she made it so simple. Phyllis shared her simple technique of adding leaves, curves, and odd shape pieces to our quilts. Though Phyllis lives in Hawaii, we are fortunate her son lives in San Diego and she is available to teach additional techniques and workshops in the future.

Canyon Retreat in Temecula
As usual, our Canyon Retreat was beyond expectations! We had only 10 participants this year, and it was a pretty quiet group. We had great fun, but the feel of the group really made for a productive 4 days.
There were visits (sometimes more than one) to Needle in a Fabric Stash and Primitive Gatherings. Drew extend-ed us the big discount on one item at Primitive Gatherings, which most of us took advantage of!
Although we did not get shortbread cookies, we did get Charity's yummy hot-out-of-the-oven chocolate chip cookies, her corn and poblano chile chowder, and bacon every morning!
We are hoping that you all will think about joining us next year, but we will be limiting the number to the first 20 who sign up (we already have 1 de-posit). If interested, please see Andrea Bacal at the next Canyon meeting.

We had just landed at the Nashville airport, on our way to the quilt show in Paducah, when Sue Atlas got an email that her quilt had won an award. It didn’t say what the award was, we would have to wait for the awards ceremony to find out. We were so excited, what a way to start a trip! We had just left all our cares at home and looked forward to a wonderful week in Tennessee and Kentucky, and now we had the anticipation of a prize at Paducah.
Sue had received notification that her quilt, Taber Wellburn Family Tree, had been juried into Paducah in March. She is part of our ‘Old Crow’ group, 10 quilters meeting every Thursday night since 1986, so when she told us the news, 5 of us decided to go with her. Travelers were: Sue Atlas, Christine Brock, Sandi Miller, Arlene Watters, Sandy MacPherson, Stephanie Richards.
We spent Monday touring The Hermit-age, Andrew Jackson’s plantation, and the Parthenon in Nashville, TN. Ev-erything was spring green, and the trees were huge and majestic; forests lined the highways. Some trees had wisteria blos-soms all the way to the top.
Tuesday we went to the Rotary quilt show, which displays antique quilts. Funds raised are used to send every Pa-ducah child with the desire to the com-munity college for 2 years. One of
the exhibits was ‘Anonymous and Me’, which consisted of antique blocks and unfinished tops completed and quilted by a 21st century quilter. There was a docent tour of them that told their sto-ries. They also had a lot of great ven-dors. Sue bought a scarf to dress up for the awards ceremony.
Tuesday evening we went to the awards ceremony, and saw many famous quil-ters. Sue was expecting an honorable mention, but when they were finished announcing those awards and hadn’t called Sue’s name, we really got excited. She won first place in the First Entry, Large Quilt category, receiving a crys-tal vase from Bernina and $1500. She scheduled an interview in front of her quilt with Bonnie Browning of AQS for Thursday. You can see the interview on this link:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nz0XZc-p12w
After the award ceremony we went to the preview night to see the quilts and got to talk to many of the makers. Many people gathered at Sue’s quilt and had lots of questions for her. It was touching to see how excited everyone was.
Wednesday we went to the show. Out front are many food vendors, many with barbeques, that smelled delicious. The Boy Scouts served strawberry short cake.
Last year I took Ricky Tims’ on-line pho-tography class, so was part of the invita-tion to gather on the porch of one of his students to meet each other. The wife of the house was Robin Gausebeck, whose entry in the Cherrywood ‘Prince’ contest won second place and was featured on the Paducah pamphlet for the show. The house was just a block away from the National Quilt Museum -- it was raining, and fun. Ricky showed up all wet ask-ing to use their dryer. Then Janet Stone (Best of Show) and Sherry Reynolds (Best Stationary Machine Workmanship) stopped by. Later Phillipa Naylor came
and sat next to me for a nice chat. We were star struck, but then we were travel-ling with our own first place winner, Sue.
Of course, we visited Hancocks, twice, and it was mobbed. When we went Tuesday there were bins of bolt ends for $6 per yard. When we went back on Thursday there was not much left in the bins. The service was very good – they hire everyone they can during that week to make it easy to get your fabric cut and check out. We ran into Canyon’s Char-lotte, Terri, Patsy and Linda there, as well as when we shopped in the bubble.
If you get the chance to go to the AQS show in Paducah, KY, you will have the time of your life. Go!

Veterans' QuiltsFaye Duggan
On May 1st, Kris Hatch and I de-livered 13 lap quilts to the Veterans Home of CA in Chula Vista. It is located on beautifully landscaped grounds including many palm trees and a variety of roses. It is a very cheerful atmosphere with large windows letting the sunlight in.
While waiting to meet the Activities Supervisor, we talked with several veterans working on jigsaw puzzles. Then Joyce, the Activities Super-visor, gave us a tour of the center. Many of the residents were enjoying an interactive music performance, with a music leader, and one of the residents played “Stormy Monday” on the piano. A group of men were in the TV room watching the latest news from CNN.
There is a beautiful rose garden on the grounds for residents to enjoy. While on our tour we met veteran
Alice and let her choose one of the quilts. Alice was so hap-py, she kissed her quilt! She said it will be nice to take to windy Pa-dre games! We then met another resi-dent, also Al-ice. She was delighted to receive one of the quilts. The remain-
der of quilts were left with Joyce to deliver later. The Veterans Home of CA also receives quilt donations from another local quilt guild; we will continue to donate as long as mem-bers are making these quilts.

Fat Quarter Exchange is a wonderful opportunity to add to your stash, or gather fabric with a specific theme.
Every month you want to play, you bring fat quarters that match that month's theme. You get a ticket for each fat quarter you bring - the more fabric you bring, the more chances you have to win them all!
At the meeting, after the break, one ticket will be pulled and that lucky person will go home with all the fat quarters in the pot that month.

We all know living in San Diego county amongst blooming flowers in the hillsides, green trees and grasses blowing in the breezes, blue skies, comfortable weather and plenty of sunshine---we are living every day in one of the most beautiful, and sunny, environments in the country. Yes, every location has its good and bad levels in desirability, but hands down, San Diego County is best known for its great desirability and has more days of sunshine and good weather than any other area in the country. Thank you Mother Nature!
While Kennel Comforters enjoys our wonderful environment in San Diego, we contribute to making the lives of the homeless animals as enjoyable for them while they are waiting for a new forever home. We provide the cats and dogs living in rescue facilities, animal shelters and humane societies, with comfort----new, handmade, round beds or mats for either cats or dogs. During the two days a month we meet, we design, sew and put together the materials to make these wonderful beds. We even take special orders from pet owners who happen to visit Kennel Comforters at the shelter while we are there, or at fund raisers sponsored by shelters or rescue groups which we
attend. We take donations to help our organization purchase additional materials to make the beds. Each month we make approximately 100-140 beds. That is a lot of beds and we need to constantly resupply our materials to make the beds. The beds are always provided to the shelters, rescue group, and humane societies at no charge.
We meet the first Friday and Saturday of each month to sew the beds. Sometimes the schedule will change due to a holiday. Always check the website for updates: kennelcomforters.com. This month we produced 115 round beds and 14 mats: Total 129 beds.
Guests are always welcome to join us and see how good we are in making the beds. We provide all the supplies needed, including a sewing machine----all the laughter is at no charge!
Meeting location: North San Diego County Animal Shelter; 2481 Palomar Airport Road, Community Room, Carlsbad, (next to Lowe’s Home Center); first Friday or Saturday of each month.
Time: 9:30 a.m. to 3-4 p.m. Website: kennelcomforters.com
