What Miss Madeira told her graduates in 1939 about

Greenway’s beauty is still true today:

“It will come back to you very vividly, very oftenwhen you are in a vacant or pensive mood.Other memories will come, too, of friends, ofclassmates, of teachers… But no memory will bemore vivid than the charm of Madeira.”Strong in Her Girls: The Madeira School Centennial History 1906–2006

Awards

The Louise Wheelock Willson ’48 Outstanding Volunteer AwardThis year’s award recipient is Terry Huffington ’72.

This award, established in June 1998, by sisters Jo Monell ’83and Kathleen Kavanagh (former Director of Development and Campus Resident),recognizes a volunteer whose record of service to Madeira has made an outstanding contribution to the School. The award recognizes and honors the spirit and accomplishments of Louise Wheelock Willson ’48. A volunteerfrom her days as secretary for her class during her senior year, Louise went on to serve as class agent, class secretary, gift club chair, reunion committee chair, and in the process became a catalyst for communication among her classmates. Her enthusiasm and love of her school and her classmates were shown in everytask she undertook; no job was too big or too small for her to tackle and do well. It is a pleasure to honor Louise’s memory and future volunteers who, like her, help keep Madeira strong.

The Alumnae Recognition AwardThis year’s award recipient is Milbry C. Polk ’71.

The Alumnae Recognition Program was developed in1991 to note the achievements of special alumnae: tomake them known as real women and role models for the student body and other graduates. Miss Madeira wasdetermined never to have academic awards in her school, and wrote that “the principle of recognition is a correctthing, but not the principle of reward.” The Madeira

School recognizes Milbry Polk’s achievements in the field of exploration and her efforts to support women in exploration.

This year’s awards will be presented Saturday, April 30th at the Picnic Lunch: Red, White and Bluegrass. Ø
