Submited by Tony HermannThis year, Racine Yacht Club - the home of the Western Lake Michigan (WLM) Star Fleet - celebrated its 100th anniversary. Star boat racing began in Racine 78 years ago in 1938 interrupted only by WWII. Our fleet is thought to be the second oldest continuous and still-active Star fleet in the world.Perhaps our most famous Racine Star sailor was Herman Jansen who at age 17 won the 1939 Great Lakes Junior Championship in Star boats and had to beat Bill Parks from Chicago to do so. He and his crew went on to the Sears Cup on Long Island Sound. In the last race, Herman was leading the series when his Jib halyard failed causing him to lose out to Bus Mosbacher and finish second. This was the same Bus Mosbacher famous for his two America’s Cup victories. As you will see from this report, our success has been and will continue to be built on the pillars of family participation, continual recruitment of new fleet members, acknowledging the critical importance of the Star crew position, honoring our fleet history, sharing equipment and go-fast tips as well as ignoring the crew weight rule. Among the founders of our fleet were five members of ‘’The Greatest Generation” - Gene Hardy*, Carly Tomasek, Kaiser Kasabian, Herman Jansen and Ed Kranek. The Ewald Hennig family for three generations (Ewald, Dick and Rick) have been great supporters of the Star fleet for more than 60 years.

In 2016, our fleet had the most active season in their history - 31 races covering three Regattas, two Seasonal series and our overall Season Fleet Championship:Regattas59th Mission Regatta (June) - Jack Rikard (Wilmette/Chicago), a welcome Illinois guest and past President of the International Star class (‘90-’95) and his crew Sam Eadie, have come to Racine and won this event in 2012, 2015 and again in 2016. This Star class regatta honors the WWII service of Jim Fox, a B25 radio operator-navigator/waist gunner who flew 58 bombing missions over Europe and Africa. Tony Herrmann was second with his 75-year old crew Wally Nickerson. 65 years ago, Wally sailed as a crew with his father Phil on Mañana - Star #1373 of the old Milwaukee Yacht Club Star Fleet. Racine’s Berger brothers team of Dave and Tom were third place.RYC Regatta/Berbv Trophy (August) - Bill Berby, an original cofounder of Racine’s star fleet and a member of Racine Yacht Club for almost 80 years, rededicated a Berby family trophy to the Star class to be awarded to the winner of the Annual Racine Regatta Star Series. Last August Tony Herrmann and his grandson Matthew Ruhm won this year’s inaugural event with five firsts. The Berger team of Dave and Tom were second and Matt and Deanna Pederson were third place.RYC Blue Nose Regatta/Hardy Trophv (September) - This year the Blue Nose weekend consisted of an 18-mile offshore race to Kenosha and return, won by Matt Pederson with his uncle, Rob Walker as crew on Saturday. Sunday there were three course races and the team of Curt Kasabian and his grandson, Ty Ewing won the day. They are the son and great grandson of Kaiser Kasabian, one our fleet’s “Greatest Generation” founding members. Gene Hardy, a member of the WWII “Greatest

Generation” and cofounder of the Racine fleet, was the only RYC member to lose his life on the beaches of Layte during the invasion of the Phillipines. Our fleet intends to honor Gene by presenting a new permanent trophy on his behalf for the Blue Nose Star Series weekend for the 2017 sailing season.Seasonal SeriesSpring Series/Tomasek Hennig TrophyMark Hetzel with Sam his son as crew dominated this series starting out with 5 first place finishes in the first six races. The Berger Brothers, last year’s Season Champions, came from behind to capture the Spring Series with the Hetzel Team finishing second, followed by the Herrmann/Ruhm Team in third place.Summer Series/Tomasek Hennig Trophy This Series was won by the Herrmann/Ruhm Team - grandfather and grandson followed by the Kasabian Team in second and Berger brothers in third place.Overall Season Fleet Championship/Kaiser Kasabian Trophy - Kaiser, cofounder of our fleet and member of the “Greatest Generation” was our most loyal fleet member. He was an active Star sailor during his entire life for more than 60 years. He succumbed to WWII related exposure to asbestos in 2008. To win this award, all 31 races count. The Herrmann/Ruhm Team duked it out all season with last year’s 2015 winning Berger Brothers Team. It came down to the last race - #31 to determine the overall season winner. The Herrmann/Ruhm Team edged out the Berger Team to win the series by 1.5 points. Third place went to the Curt Kasabian Team. Curt’s crews were always family - either brother-inlaw Terry VanParys or grandsons Caleb Hofner or Ty Ewing.SummaryThe Western Lake Michigan Fleet enjoyed its most successful racing season in the 78 years of its existence.
