Meet our New Mexico Operations

Yes, there is a little bit of Kansas City in New Mexico. The Kansas City National Security Campus mission has employees located in Albuquerque to serve several mission critical support roles to the Office of Secure Transportation and Emergency Response. Watch the YouTube video to learn more!

Energy Secretary Rick Perry and NNSA Administrator Frank Klotz visited the Kansas City National Security Campus on May 17 to tour the facilities and thank Honeywell employees for their dedication to maintaining the safety and security of our nation’s nuclear deterrent. During the tour, Secretary Perry met Honeywell Welder Tim Ward and learned first-hand how to operate the laser welding machine. He also congratulated a group of engineers and electronic assemblers working on the W76-1 program for meeting commitments to our U.S. Navy partners.

History repeating itselfThis is not the first time in our history that we’ve seen tremendous growth in our workforce. In 1953 the Bendix Employment Office was crowded with employees waiting to start their jobs. Fast forward to 2017, and our main lobby is just as crowded with new hires waiting for new employee orientation to begin.

We’re growing! Future workload projections keep rising and Honeywell has been hiring about 500 people a year to keep up with the need for additional employees. By summer of 2016, we will have outgrown our main facility so some employees will be moving to a leased office space nearby. Nearly 400 employees will relocate to an office building in Overland Park, Kansas to alleviate the overcapacity.

Additional office space is needed for growing workforce

General Robin Rand, Commander of Air Force Global Strike Command (AFGSC) was our special guest speaker in April. He toured the facility and spoke to employees about AFGSC’s combat ready forces that provide strategic deterrence.

In the past two years, 10 universities have signed Master Collaboration Agreements (MCA) to facilitate closer collaboration on research and development of new technology to meet national security needs.

Most recently Pitt State, University of Arkansas and Missouri University-Columbia held signing ceremonies with Honeywell leaders and University faculty to signify the growing partnerships. This growing consortium of academia greatly benefits all parties by helping to support an innovative research educational environment for tomorrow’s employees and meet important national security needs.

Congrats to Honeywell FM&T Procurement Director Curtis Mears for receiving the DOE Office of Small & Disadvantaged Business Utilization’s Director’s Excellence Award!

This award recognizes the efforts and commitment of DOE’s small business advocates who take every opportunity to utilize small business concerns to meet its requirements. Small businesses are essential in stimulating the economy and we want the

Department to be a leader in providing contract and subcontract opportunities to small businesses.

Mears received the award during the annual DOE Small Business Forum & Expo in Kansas City, MO, in May. The event featured educational workshops as well as business one-on-one matchmaking sessions. Over 1,000 attendees represented all levels of Federal, state, and local government agencies, the small business community, and large/prime contractors.

Kansas City puts a spotlight on emerging leaders each year from a variety of industries in the region. This year’s 40 Under Forty awardees include Honeywell Sr. Manager Anthony Carey who is being recognized for his achievement both in and out of work.

In his role, he is charged with helping accelerate organic growth and to bring both speed and value to the plant’s manufacturing operations. As a result, he’s helped Honeywell achieve 30 percent annual growth,

more than $25 million in program cost savings, and a 25 percent reduction in cycle times.

At home, he’s a proud family man who makes time for all the extracurricular activities of three daughters. For the past six years, he’s served as youth soccer head coach with Blue Valley Recreation in Overland Park, and in that same role for five years with Sporting Blue Valley Soccer Association.

Shawn Geib and his security team have created innovative ways to get employees cleared and access their working spaces more quickly at the KCNSC. And now as the 2016 NNSA Security Manager of the Year, his efforts have been recognized by our customer for avoiding $1.8 million in costs and reducing clearance times by 25 percent which helps our new employees be more productive sooner.

During Shawn’s nine-year duration with Honeywell, he has been promoted five times and is currently serving as the Interim Security Director. Throughout his career, he sought opportunities to develop himself and to set himself apart from his counterparts.

“Development is huge,” says Shawn. “If I can develop myself then pass on what I know and encourage my employees to do the same, hopefully to surpass me one day.”

Honeywell Electrical Engineer Daniel Ewing was recently named a 2017 TechConnect National Innovation Awardee. His presentation titled “Unique Chip Identification Using the Material Properties of Semiconductor Substrates,” was recognized and showcased at the TechConnect National Innovation Summit in Washington, D.C. in May.

Ewing’s presentation focuses on a method to use the variations in material properties of semiconductors as a unique identifier for integrated circuits. The variation in properties results from ion implantation, and the variations can be visualized using optical measurement techniques.

The TechConnect Innovation Awards selects the top early-stage innovations from around the world through an industry-review process of the top 20 percent of annually submitted technologies into the TechConnect National Innovation Summit. Rankings are based on the potential positive impact the submitted technology will have on a specific industry sector.

Honeywell outdoor classroom inspires students to pursue science

Twelve children of Honeywell employees working at the Kansas City National Security Campus were among a group of international students chosen to attend the Honeywell Leadership Challenge Academy (HLCA) this year. They have now made friends with other high school students from all over the world.

Held at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center in Huntsville, Alabama, the program engages students in team-building challenges such as building their own rockets and participating in simulated astronaut training, shuttle missions and a moon walk. Students also

meet scientists, engineers and former astronauts, who help reinforce core leadership competencies and share their first-hand experience.

HLCA uses interactive technology, science-oriented workshops and team exercises to teach children of Honeywell employees between the ages of 16-18 leadership skills in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). The program is designed to build students’ leadership skills and develop their capabilities through hands-on challenges.

Nearly 100 students from University Academy Middle School moved their science classroom outdoors last month. After studying the water cycle and environmental management, they came to Indian Creek to learn first-hand how to collect samples and record the data, as part of a site survey.

Honeywell and Blue River Watershed Association employees helped the students perform tests and

monitor stream conditions. When they returned to the classroom, the students were able to analyze the results to implement water quality improvement projects.

Honeywell sponsors the T.R.U.E. Blue (Teaching Rivers in an Urban Environment) program each year to help local students make the connection between science and the environment.

The rain didn’t stop employees from running in the first-ever “Jog with JR” - a 5k Run/Walk with Honeywell FM&T President John “JR” Ricciardelli. The 5K supported Honeywell’s Safe Kids Worldwide initiative. Safe Kids Worldwide is a global organization dedicated to reducing preventable injuries in children from motor vehicles, sports, drownings, falls, burns, poisonings and more.

On Monday, April 17, over 100 Honeywell and NNSA employees registered and donated blood, thirty of which were first time donors. This is the best Honeywell has done with the Community Blood Center since 2008!
