As libraries grow and evolve to meet the needs of a changing community, their spaces must be examined and revitalized.

Imagine children playing, talking, and reading in a bright and colorful space designed just for them. Envision quiet study rooms that allow for adults to work without interruption. Picture teenagers learning in spaces that encourage invention and collaboration. Books are displayed in a way that make them accessible for everyone and easy to find. Furniture is comfortable. Technology and equipment are easy to use. People of all ages are using a space where they feel valued, productive, and connected to their community. Are you ready to walk through the doors of this St. Charles City-County Library?

Our newly adopted Library Strategic Plan mandates us to work toward six goals over the next five years. Goal #1 challenges us to create “Facilities for the Future”. To that end, the Library Board has recently authorized us to engage the services of an outside vendor that specializes in library facilities planning. This firm will evaluate our existing library branches, then create a comprehensive plan that will help us grow and improve. Part of that plan will address how the Library can increase service to underserved areas, while improving efficiency and customer experiences at our busiest locations. The plan may also include the development of new facilities and the expansion or repurposing of some of our current facilities. We are looking forward to creating and updating libraries that not only meet the needs of our customers, but also function as catalysts for customers to build successful lives, families, and communities.

As we prepare to implement the goals of our Strategic Plan, I look forward to sharing our plans and progress in future issues of the Kaleidoscope magazine. If you want more information now, visit mylibrary.org/library-plans-and-reports to read all of the goals and strategies outlined in the 2019-2023 Strategic Plan.

See you at the Library!

The concept is simple, the rewards are priceless. Read 1,000 books with your little learner before he/she starts kindergarten. It’s a fun way to help Grow Your Reader with a practice that is proven to build early literacy - exposing your child to lots of books!

Pick up a 1000 Books Before Kindergarten booklet at the Library to keep track of the books that you - or anyone else - reads to your child.

Johnny is a typical teenager. He attends school, spends time with

friends, and creates magical worlds full of demons, castles, and dangerous journeys. Johnny is a Dungeons & Dragons Master at the McClay Branch of the St. Charles City-County Library. He leads a group of fantasy fans through an imaginative game full of adventure, fun, and a little spell-casting.

At a recent D&D gathering, the group arrives and begins to unpack guidebooks, miniature characters, and plenty of snacks for the afternoon. They are mostly teens, but some of the men and women are adults. Several, like Johnny, had never set foot in the Library until they joined the Dungeons and Dragons group. As today’s session begins, Johnny describes the scene. The players face danger - not to themselves, but to their characters in the game - and they ask questions:

“How much damage would a walking stick do?”

“Are the pillars made of stone? Are they moving?”

“Could my toad, Rodney, get us out of here? We can ride him. He’s awesome.”

Johnny answers definitely, and when the conversation veers away from the task, he reminds them, “Let’s focus.” The discussion is witty, intelligent, and extremely creative. There is plenty of laughter as the afternoon progresses and the D&D quest continues.

Johnny had been gaming for about three years when he was asked to come to a Library Dungeons & Dragons group for the first time. He had led quests for friends and family and even started a D&D group at school, but he never knew that the Library offered resources and groups for fantasy fans until a friend invited him. After attending a Dungeons & Dragons group at the McClay Branch for awhile, he was asked to substitute for the leader, or “Dungeon Master” of their quest. That evolved into a new group with Johnny at the head of the table.

He is quick to extol the virtues of the Library and the game: “You make friends. It’s great entertainment. It helps you focus because you have an outlet for creative energy.” He admits that D&D can be expensive, but only if you want it to be. Resources are available online, and the library offers many materials for checkout. Johnny

encourages anyone who is interested to give a Dungeons & Dragons group a try. “I’ve never been in a group that was not welcoming. If you’re nervous, watch videos on YouTube of a campaign, then come to the Library.”

Children, adults, and teens regularly discover hobbies and interests through groups that meet at the Library. Even if you’re not a reader, the Library has something for you. There are classes that teach everything from knitting to retirement planning. Groups have formed around hobbies ranging from movies to model-building. There are live music performances, history presentations, regular card games, and technology instruction. The Library offers much more than books. In fact, there’s something for everyone.

Whether you’re looking for a group of creative friends, a great book, or a new hobby to Master, you may find what you’re looking for at the Library.

Even if you’re not a reader, the Library has something for you.
