re l ex smile, the future of refractive surgery - medifocus sept 2013
DESCRIPTION

Medifocus is a high-tech practice in the most peaceful and private surroundings between Leuven and Brussels.
![Page 3: Re l ex smile, the future of refractive surgery - medifocus sept 2013](https://reader038.vdocuments.mx/reader038/viewer/2022110119/55645e0ed8b42acd408b47cd/html5/thumbnails/3.jpg)
It is also one of the world’s leading centers for ReLEx smile treatments.
![Page 4: Re l ex smile, the future of refractive surgery - medifocus sept 2013](https://reader038.vdocuments.mx/reader038/viewer/2022110119/55645e0ed8b42acd408b47cd/html5/thumbnails/4.jpg)
We have the newest generation of equipment at hand. This is why we can perform PRK, femto-LASIK and ReLEx smile.
![Page 5: Re l ex smile, the future of refractive surgery - medifocus sept 2013](https://reader038.vdocuments.mx/reader038/viewer/2022110119/55645e0ed8b42acd408b47cd/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
Current results show, however, that in some cases ReLEx smile is probably safer, faster, and better than both PRK and LASIK.

Laser eye surgery remodels the cornea’s stromal layer in order to change the way light is bent inside the eye.

The smile principle is revolutionary. The Visumax femtosecond laser creates a small lens (lenticule).
![Page 9: Re l ex smile, the future of refractive surgery - medifocus sept 2013](https://reader038.vdocuments.mx/reader038/viewer/2022110119/55645e0ed8b42acd408b47cd/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
This lenticule is removed through a small access point. The corneal upper layers are left intact.
![Page 10: Re l ex smile, the future of refractive surgery - medifocus sept 2013](https://reader038.vdocuments.mx/reader038/viewer/2022110119/55645e0ed8b42acd408b47cd/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)

The 7 reasons why ReLEx smileis the future of refractive
surgery
![Page 12: Re l ex smile, the future of refractive surgery - medifocus sept 2013](https://reader038.vdocuments.mx/reader038/viewer/2022110119/55645e0ed8b42acd408b47cd/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)
1. No flap needs to be cut. The area of the incision is reduced to a minimum. It is no longer necessary to fold back the cornea to correct the eye.
![Page 13: Re l ex smile, the future of refractive surgery - medifocus sept 2013](https://reader038.vdocuments.mx/reader038/viewer/2022110119/55645e0ed8b42acd408b47cd/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)
2. Unlike in LASIK, there is no risk of shifting or displacement of the flap as a result of rubbing or other physical contact.
![Page 14: Re l ex smile, the future of refractive surgery - medifocus sept 2013](https://reader038.vdocuments.mx/reader038/viewer/2022110119/55645e0ed8b42acd408b47cd/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
3. The nerves responsible for tear regulation remain more or less intact. Therefore, there is less dryness of the eyes after the treatment.
![Page 15: Re l ex smile, the future of refractive surgery - medifocus sept 2013](https://reader038.vdocuments.mx/reader038/viewer/2022110119/55645e0ed8b42acd408b47cd/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)
4. Unlike in PRK / LASIK, there is no treatment at the ocular surface. The surgery is painless and minimally invasive.
![Page 16: Re l ex smile, the future of refractive surgery - medifocus sept 2013](https://reader038.vdocuments.mx/reader038/viewer/2022110119/55645e0ed8b42acd408b47cd/html5/thumbnails/16.jpg)
5. The use of femtosecond technology results in outstanding predictability. 97% of eyes are within ±0.5 diopters after the treatment.
![Page 17: Re l ex smile, the future of refractive surgery - medifocus sept 2013](https://reader038.vdocuments.mx/reader038/viewer/2022110119/55645e0ed8b42acd408b47cd/html5/thumbnails/17.jpg)

6. The procedure is fast, precise, and convenient because it sues an anatomically shaped contact glass.
![Page 19: Re l ex smile, the future of refractive surgery - medifocus sept 2013](https://reader038.vdocuments.mx/reader038/viewer/2022110119/55645e0ed8b42acd408b47cd/html5/thumbnails/19.jpg)
7. The treatment’s effect is visible 24 hours after surgery, with visual acuity typically stabilizing completely in 6 weeks or so.

Medifocus is one of the few Carl Zeiss Reference Centres. In this way we benefit from more than 20 years of Carl Zeiss’s expertise.
![Page 21: Re l ex smile, the future of refractive surgery - medifocus sept 2013](https://reader038.vdocuments.mx/reader038/viewer/2022110119/55645e0ed8b42acd408b47cd/html5/thumbnails/21.jpg)
There are only a limited number of sites doing ReLEx smile worldwide. Those who do have quickly made ReLEx smile their procedure of choice.

Medifocus is located centrally in Belgium and can be reached easily by car, by train, and through Brussels International Airport (Zaventem).
