It’s that time of year again – the importance of flu vaccination

Flu vaccination is an integral part of overall health-care. Pharmacies can now immunize anyone with an Alberta Healthcare number starting at 5 years old. This makes getting vaccinated much easier and more convenient than ever before.

A new high dose vaccine is available this year that is proving to be more effective in seniors. It is not covered by Alberta Health, but some pharmacies – including Calmar Pharmacy – are stocking it for those patients willing to pay for better protection against influenza. FluMist should also be available for purchase sometime in November for those pa-tients who don’t like needles.

For healthy adults, infection with influenza means 1-2 weeks off work. It is much more dangerous for children and the elderly. In Canada, there are ap-proximately 3500 deaths every year related to in-fluenza, primarily in children and seniors. Seniors who survive the infection can be left debilitated by long term damage to heart, lungs or blood vessels.

Infected individuals are contagious before they even know they are sick which means they can spread the infection unknowingly to vulnerable loved ones. Vaccination protects you and everyone around you. In a typical year, approximately 5-15% of the population will contract influenza. The most effective way to decrease the chances of you or your loved ones getting the flu is to get vaccinated.

Visit our pharmacists at Calmar Pharmacy soon. Get it done and save a life!

Report from Convention 2018By Kieran Quirke,

NDP Candidate for Drayton Valley-Devon

As your Alberta NDP Candidate for Drayton Valley-Devon, I’m proud to bring you news from our Convention and open the conversation with you on where we want to take this province, and Drayton Valley-Devon, in the future. It’s been an exciting three and a half years with Rachel Notley’s leadership. The NDP was elected in 2015, putting an end to 44 years of a PC govern-ment that lost its way, arrogantly taking Albertans’ trust for granted. She was elected at a time when our economy took a hit with the oil price collapse that was costing tens of thousands of jobs, and kept billions from the treasury, but chose to invest in Albertans instead of making deep and reckless cuts. Notley got big money out of politics, stabilized funding for healthcare, reversed cuts to schools that would have left tens of thousands of kids in overcrowded classrooms, and put Albertans to work with much-needed investments to address the infrastructure deficit, which was the biggest leg-acy the PCs left for Albertans. She also took unprecedented steps to fight poverty by expanding the Alberta Child Family Benefit, started the Affordable Child Care pilot pro-ject which includes a daycare in Drayton Valley that costs $25 per day per child, and established a school nutrition program that guarantees 35,000 kids get a healthy meal every day at schools across Alberta. This NDP government is fighting for all Alber-tans, including rural communities like ours in Dray-ton Valley-Devon. This was evident at the NDP convention with the NDP’s Rural Caucus – which I co-chair, advocating on behalf of rural Albertans, communities, and businesses – with several im-portant policy resolutions to address rural issues. One resolution, that I personally co-wrote, advo-cates for rural Albertans to have access to high-speed Internet to support business, education and social services. Another calls for increased support for educa-tion in rural Alberta, with increased funding to keep small rural schools with declining enrolment viable and improving transportation. We want to improve public safety in rural Alberta

by ensuring law-enforcement officers have the ne-cessary training, equipment, and coordination to be able to assist the RCMP.The Rural Caucus also advocates for improv-ing market access for Canada’s Grain industry by working with all levels of government to strengthen Canada’s international reputation as a reliable, economic source of grain. We also support produ-cers with a proposal to help protect against inva-sive species. We advocated for resolutions to reduce the risk from suspended wells in Alberta, and to improve the regulation of Alberta’s oil and gas industry. We’re pushing to strengthen Alberta’s land-use planning process to preserve the public interest and the rights of landowners and other rights holders. And the Rural Caucus proposed working with mu-nicipalities to improve intergovernmental cost shar-ing, as outlined in the Municipal Government Act, with respect to more equitably sharing service de-livery costs between municipalities. These are the kinds of things Rachel Notley, myself and the rest of the Alberta NDP is fighting for to make life better for all of us in rural Alberta. And there’s not enough space in a single news-paper column to go into all of them in detail. Over the coming weeks, I’ll be writing about each of these resolutions in more detail, and how they can help strengthen our rural communities in Drayton Valley-Devon and the rest of rural Alberta. If you have any questions or concerns, or you would like to get involved, please write to me at [email protected] I look for-ward to hearing from you!
