A divided country. Fights at the dinner table. Political vitriol. What does it mean to love our neighbors in the midst of such a

climate?

As Catholics, we have a long tradition of engagement in the political process as a means of putting our faith into action. We are called to bring the best of ourselves and our faith to the public square—and yet today, many shy away from such involvement because our national and local conversations are filled with vitriol and harsh language, often directed at people themselves.

When personal attacks replace honest debate, no one wins. This kind of attack, no matter the reason, only serves to further divide our communities. As Catholics, we

must model a better way. We invite you to join the Civilize It campaign by taking the

pledge below as a way to promote civility, love our neighbors, and build community.

Civilize It is about making room in your heart for those with whom you disagree. We are called to recognize that each one of us is a beloved child of God and to respond in love to that reality. Civilize It is a non-partisan call to focus on the dignity of all people, even when we disagree, and to put faith in action by bearing witness to a better way forward.

Take the pledge below as an individual, family, or community. Anyone and everyone can commit together to honoring human dignity through civil conversation. I pledge:

Civility To recognize the human dignity of those with whom I disagree, treat others with respect, and rise above attacks when directed at me.

Clarity

To root my political viewpoints in the Gospel and a well formed conscience, which involves prayer, conversation, study and listening. I will stand up for my convictions and speak out when I witness language that disparages others' dignity, while also listening and seeking to understand others’ experiences.

Compassion

To encounter others with a tone and posture which affirms that I honor the dignity of others and invites others to do the same. I will presume others’ best intentions and listen to their stories with empathy. I will strive to understand before seeking to be understood.

OF MANY THINGS...

"Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you”. . . And on and on it goes. These words seem harsh and contradictory to all we have been taught. And, it seems easy enough to shake our heads and turn away, murmuring, “It’s not fair!"

Reading through this passage from Luke 6:27 – 28, calls for a new way of looking at life. What helps me to live this way is to think of myself on the other side of the coin. I think about the times that I have mistreated someone – and they have forgiven me! Or the time I reached out in need, and I was given twice what I needed. And then I think about my relationship with God. Has God treated me fairly – or mercifully? It always comes down on the side of mercy!

Jesus gives us a new way to live – with mercy and compassion. Everyone has a story – a reason to be the way they are. Can I look at someone who has hurt me and see the times that they have been hurt? Can I use this opportunity to pray for those who have mistreated me? Can I apply this to the news of the day, as I experience the division within our nation, the entrenchment in differing opinions?

Kindness matters. It really does. I believe it is an important way to change the world – by changing myself and my responses to others. It reminds me of the Loving Kindness Prayer. For in this prayer we pray for ourselves, admitting and embracing our need for prayer. Then we pray for those we love. We only want the best for them. Then we pray for those who are difficult to love. Sometimes we need to stop there. It just doesn’t seem possible at this point in time to pray for someone who I am not able to forgive just yet. But, I want to, so I pray as best as I can for them. Then I pray for myself again. Perhaps I have come to realize how much I am in need of loving kindness.

Here is one way to pray this prayer: Begin by quieting your mind and heart. Pray slowly: (For myself) May I be filled with loving kindness. May I be at peace. (Repeat 3 times)

Pray for those closest to you, those you love. Hold their names in your heart as you pray 3 times: May you be filled with loving kindness. May you be at peace.

Pray for those you will meet/have met this day, especially those who need your prayer, and those who brought you comfort or joy. Hold their names or faces in your heart as you pray 3 times: May you be filled with loving kindness. May you be at peace.

Pray for those who are most difficult to love, those who have hurt you and you cannot as yet forgive, those who hold differing opinions. Hold their names in your heart if you can as you pray 3 times: May you be filled with loving kindness. May you be at peace.

Pray 3 times for yourself once again: May I be filled with loving kindness. May I be at peace.

Feel free to add as many categories and names of people or places as needed.

Committing to a prayer practice such as this allows our minds and hearts to open in the way of compassionate living. The repetition helps to rewrite what we have learned from a young age – to be fair. Today let us be attention to our call to be merciful as God is merciful.

Our faith formation program, GIFT (Growing in Faith Together) will be delivered online this year. We will adapt our program to best serve you during this time of transition to school and the unknown environment of the Covid-19 pandemic. We want you all to feel supported, safe and faith-filled. Our program will meet you where you are at and offer elements to help you grow in faith as an individual, couple and family. For well over a decade we have provided a lifelong, family centered process that empowers parents/guardians to pass on faith to their children. Our delivery will be different but it will helpful, useful, conversational and fun. As always our intergenerational program will have an adult component for those without children. Remaining connected to your faith community is essential now and always. We are committed to accompany you through this uncertain time and are excited to begin a year focused on what we believe as Catholic Christians. Each month we will focus on a I believe I b statement in The Apostles Creed: God, Jesus, Holy Spirit, Church, Ever-lasting Life will frame our learning. Age appropriate, inter-generational and relationship focused learning opportunities will provide a year that focuses on the essential beliefs coached by our pastoral leaders and teaching ministers.

· Runs October-March with monthly learning sessions available 24/7 to accommodate your schedule. · Live online gathering opportunities will be offered.· More information and registration forms are now available on the website and through email.· Sacramental Preparation for First Reconciliation and First Holy Communion will begin in January 2021 and completed in May 2021 for those in second grade/second year of faith formation. Must be registered in GIFT this year. · Confirmation for Grade 9/First Yr. or Grade 10/Second Yr. will be safely adapted and parents and students will be contacted after registration.· New Families are welcome! Walk-in office hours are M-Th, 12pm-2pm or by appointment.
