RCTC’s Automotive Technology program is a two-year program with the goal of each student completing ASE certification. Many RCTC Automotive Technology students are already working in their field before they graduate. Local automotive shops support the RCTC program and the students by employing students in part-time, flexible positions that work with class schedules. Many RCTC Automotive Technology graduates are working in Rochester and surrounding area automotive repair facilities including many dealerships located in southeast Minnesota.

Vehicles today are quite complex. Some of them have as many as 40 different computers all using data on the same network. Technicians use various electronic scan tools to communicate with these systems during diagnostic processes to pinpoint problems. These computers may share trouble codes.

RCTC Automotive Technology graduates’ salaries will vary depending on the areas of repair pursued. Some students begin their careers as lube technicians and then advance into repair and diagnostic technicians as they increase their training and areas of expertise. Wages can range from $13.00 to $18.00 per hour for beginning technician positions. Experienced and advanced auto mechanics can make over $100,000 per year.
