After an exhaustive recruitment process, the RCSD Board of Directors unanimously selected Ms. Chris Montana as the District’s General Manager at its regular meeting of December 11, 2012. Ms. Montana is exceedingly well qualified for the job. She simultaneously man- ages the three special districts of Surfside Colony Community Services District, Sunset Beach Sani- tary District and Surfside Colony Storm Water Pro- tection District. Chris Montana will be employed on a part-time twenty hour per week basis with addi- tional hours, as determined by the Board, after the transition period. Former General Manager Henry Taboada will assist during her transition. Ms. Montana’s petite stature stands in stark con- trast to her enormous aptitude. She has a degree in Business Admini- stration from USC and has been an active Certified Public Accountant since 1993. Her financial savvy combined with her Special District back- ground and experience will be a significant asset to the District. Chris Montana is a proven multi-tasker and it’s a good thing too. On behalf of the Board and the community she will be tackling issues such as latent powers, paperless board agenda conversion, capital improvement pro- jects, Tot Lot Playground upgrades and the occasional coyotes and crime. During the December Board Meeting, Chris Montana was for- mally introduced to the public and spoke briefly to the Board and the community. She had this to say, “I want to thank the Board of Directors for selecting me. I am truly honored to have been selected as the Gen- eral Manager of Rossmoor Community Services District. I think Ross- moor is exemplary in the dedication of its residents in creating an ideal community. I’m looking forward to being a part of that and I’m looking forward to a productive year ahead.” Also at the December meeting, three incumbent Directors were issued certificates in lieu of election, as their seats on the Board were uncontested. The District saved $11,000 by not having an election . The District is confident that its dedication to strong leadership combined with a talented staff and passionate resi- dents will continue to push Rossmoor full speed ahead towards main- taining its well-earned title of “Superb Suburb”. PURE GENIUS

“Be a yardstick of quality.

excellence is expected.”

-Steve Jobs-

Greetings Rossmoor! I would just like to say how hon-

ored I am to have been selected among so many qualified

candidates for the General Manager position. The com-

munity of Rossmoor has been exemplary in its efforts to create a

“Superb Suburb” and I look forward to serving this great community

and being a part of it. I am really excited to embark on this new journey

with all of you. Rest assured that I will hold myself to the high standards

that Rossmoor demands and promise to work hard representing its

residents. I look forward to meeting many of you at our regular board

meetings which are held every second Tuesday of the month, at 7 p.m.

in the Rush Park Auditorium. If you missed my first board meeting, you

can view it anytime on our website. I am confident that 2013 is going to

be an efficient and productive year. Let’s get started! —CM

Thanks to all the generous participants, the Tot Lot Tile Program was very popular. So popular in fact that another one is planned for Spring. A special thanks goes out to Lee Lindquist with the Rossmoor Homeown-ers Association for all of his hard work coordinating this effort. For more information on upcoming tile opportunities, please contact Lee Lindquist

with the Rossmoor Homeowners Association at 562-799-1401. —LD

This year the District partnered with the Orange County Sheriff’s Depart-ment by acting as a convenient holiday toy and gift drop-off location. The venture was a huge success. Hundreds of toys and gifts were col-lected for the benefit of local children and seniors. Thank you to every-one who donated so generously. You not only made a whole lot of faces

light up, you made your community proud!

SUCCESSFUL PARTNERSHIPS IN 2012

As a Tree City USA, it’s important to walk the walk. Many government organizations have abandoned the paper and binder business model in favor of electronic Wi-Fi enabled tablet devices. The cities of Huntington Beach, La Palma, Piedmont, Brea, (to name a few) all use tablet devices in lieu of pa-per, to view their agendas, policies and other docu-ments. With its easy to use interface, and stable

company image, the iPad is currently the most popular tablet choice. The District has been exploring a similar course of action. Tablet devices have proven themselves useful and cost effective. In addition to board meetings they can be used for committee meetings, special meetings and research. Virtual document libraries containing frequently accessed reference materi-als can be accessed on the fly. In this way users often increase their pro-

ductivity by having such a versatile and mobile tool at their fingertips.

RCSD EXPLORES PAPERLESS AGENDAS

RCSD knows that protecting Rossmoor’s urban forest is vital since the trees are such an important part of the community. Not only do the mature trees provide beauty and shade but are important to the health and welfare of Rossmoor’s residents. Trees pro-vide a wide range of monetary, health, aesthetic and even psychological benefits. Our trees care for us, so we need to care for them as well. Young trees with yellow, curling or brown-edged leaves are asking you for water. Young trees do NOT like weed whack-ers, blowers or mowers – stay away! Mulch – about 3 or 4 inches deep – holds water and makes your trees healthier. The best way to water a tree is with a soaker or a long-term trickle – your lawn sprinkler system doesn’t do the job. It is also important to know that it is illegal for residents to prune or remove the parkway trees in Rossmoor. Please help the District to maintain this policy by informing new neighbors of it and re-porting any violations to RSCD. Residents that feel their tree needs pruning or care can contact the Tree Program Assistant, Mary Kingman, for an evaluation. In the coming year, the District has a goal to plant all vacant parkway sites in Rossmoor with a new tree. We will need the community’s help in caring for these new trees. Besides deep watering for new trees, please remember to keep at least a 12” area around the new tree free of turf grass and weeds so that the tree is allowed to mature and thrive with-out competition for water and nutrients and to allow root development. With the com-munity’s help, our beautiful urban forest can continue to thrive and insure Rossmoor’s

status as a Tree City U.S.A. —MK

Green, well manicured lawns are part of the pride of Rossmoor. One of the ways we keep our parks looking so neat is by mowing every Wednesday. Please keep this in mind when planning a picnic or other outdoor activity.

WEDNESDAYS ARE MOWING DAYS...
