Meeting 26th October

Last meeting was the

Official Visit of the

District Governor Liz

Although still ‘cash

It has and is doing a

few Community and

Vocational projects

with room for

expansion in this area.

Liz talked at length at

the Assembly on the RI

Presidential Citation

and Changemaker

Award, both of which

are well in hand and

which have been

written up in the

Bulletin. She also

informed the Club of

the ability to utilise

RAWCS (Rotary

Australia World

Community Service

Projects), also well

utilised by this Club as

there are currently five

such projects listed by

the RCFB, with a

further two which have

been completed.

Other areas covered in

detail in the Assembly

were mainly to do with

Club Service, that is the

Pride of Workmanship

Awards

As October is

Vocational Service

Month, two Pride of

Workmanship Awards

were presented at the

Club’s meeting on 26th

October.

The first was to Andre

Harris from Honmaz,

who, with a friendly

disposition goes that

extra mile to provide

outstanding customer

service. When advised

of his award, Andre

said he was just doing

his job, to which he

received the reply that

he did it very well.

The second was to

Kathy Lucas, PA to

Prof. Ralph Martins

from the McCusker

Alzheimer’s Research

Foundation who was

recognised for 14 years

of dedicated and

sensitive service to the

community through

her work with the

Foundation. Prof.

Martins attended the

meeting to recognise

and support Kathy’s

recognition.

Heartfelt

Congratulations to

both recipients.

Rotary Information

Rotary is a worldwide

organisation which

takes many years to

become knowledgeable

about as it offers a

smorgasbord of

projects and programs

in the Five Avenues of

Service through which

it works.

All members have been

given a small booklet

called ‘The ABCs of

Rotary’ plus a

brochure on the

Programs of the Rotary

Foundation called ‘The

RF Quick Reference

Guide’. If you have not

already done so, please

read them as these two

small items contain a

wealth of information

and are an excellent

overview of Rotary and

many of its programs.

Another booklet

provided to everyone

which contains a

substantial amount of

information is the

District Directory.

Please also take a close

look at this.

Once you have begun

to learn more of Rotary

and its programs, if

you wish to know more

on any aspect please

feel free to contact Ken

or Di Collins as both

are only too happy to

provide information on

any aspect of Rotary.

Ken, the most senior

Rotarian in Western

Australia, has served

on both the Boards of

RI, as a Director of the

Jenny Gill, Kathy Lucas and Ralph Martins Pride of Workmanship Awards - Wilma McBain,

Andre Harris and Pres Bryant Stokes

Debbie Cash, Carina Marshall, Vanessa Wood,

Andre and Peta Harris and Pam Reynolds

Merren & Max Hipkins and Graeme Prior

Rotary Club of Freshwater Bay, District 9455 Page 3

Board of RI and as a

Trustee of the Rotary

Foundation so is

eminently qualified to

assist you on any

aspect of Rotary.

From time to time

speakers on Rotary

topics are programmed

into meetings, the

Rotary Down Under

Magazine also contains

an immense wealth of

information. If

members are

interested, periodic

‘Rotary Information’

evenings or sessions of

a weekend can be held

where members learn

more about various

aspects of Rotary.

Please indicate your

interest and if enough

members say they

would like these to

proceed, then it can be

arranged.

You have no doubt

heard both words

‘Projects’ and

‘Programs’ used when

talking about Rotary

activities. It can be

confusing to many and

the difference between

the two is that Clubs

and Districts carry out

‘Projects’ whilst

activities which come

down to the Clubs or

Districts from Rotary

International are

‘Programs’ of RI.

Examples of this is all

the activities of the

Rotary Foundation are

official Programs, as is

RYLA (Rotary Youth

Leadership Awards),

Rotaract, Interact,

Rotary Community

Corps, Rotary

Friendship Exchange

and so on.

Hugh Jackman has a

short video on Polio.

Social Activity

A casual social activity

in the form of a

Cocktail Function was

held last Sunday, 23rd

October. It was nice to

have current and

potential members in

attendance, along with

our Group Study

Exchange Team

Member (to Georgia

USA) David and his

wife Rachelle.

The ‘photographer’

forgot to take photos

until after the

departure of some

members, so apologies

for missing some in the

photographs.

Feedback from

attendees was very

positive and we look

forward to increasing

the number of social

events in the coming

months.

World Polio Day 24th

October

World Polio Day was

celebrated by the RCFB

with three ‘Paint Your

Pinkies’ at local

schools.

First school was

Quintilian, where

Carina Marshall came

along to assist. $240

was contributed by

students there as they

all eagerly had ‘Pinkies

Painted’.

Second school was

Swanbourne where

$208 was raised at Debbie Cash, Gillian Yudelman, Elham, Gordon Hay,

Maryam and Pam Reynolds

Joyce Lee, Ken Collins, Judy Edwards & Rachelle

recess when students

carried out the Painting

of Pinkies after which

PRID Ken presented a

PowerPoint on

Immunisation to years

4-7.

Third school was

Dalkeith at which just

yr 7 was given a

PowerPoint

presentation on

Immunisation, after

which they Painted

Pinkies and raised $30.

Students at all three

schools thoroughly

enjoyed the activity

and also learning more

about immunisation.

Whilst having fun and

‘being educated, $470

was raised for the Polio

Eradication program.

Certificates of

Appreciation will be

presented to all three

schools.

CHOGM

Past RI President Glen

Kinross (from

Queensland) and PRID

Ken Collins will be

attending CHOGM on

Saturday morning as

PM Julia Gillard is

announcing a

significant contribution

to the Polio Eradication

Program by the

Australian

Government.

Ken has been to

Canberra twice in

recent months, with

Michael Sheldrick from

the Global Poverty

Project to lobby the

Australian

Government for funds

for the Polio

Eradication Program.

Gillian Yudelman also

attended the 3 day

CHOGM Business

Forum as a

representative of Maiti

Nepal.

Microscopes for

Subiaco Primary

School

Principal Carolyn Press

made contact with Sec.

Di back in June

requesting a set of

microscopes for

Subiaco P.S. After

unsuccessfully asking a

couple of Rotary Clubs

to sponsor this request,

the RCFB took it on

and presented 30 units

to the school on

Thursday 27th October.

After the School

Assembly, at least three

of the teachers

expressed excitement

and said they could not

wait to get their hands

on the units. The

Grade 3s are currently

working with rocks

and will be seeing them

in a different light next

week.

Rotary WA Cord

Blood Bank Open

Week

The Rotary Cord Blood

Bank is Rotary’s gift to

the people of WA for

its 100th Anniversary.

Although that was in

2005, it has taken a

number of years to

raise the funds and

bring the project to

where it is today.

The week of 13-17th

November is when

tours will be conducted

of the Cord Blood

Presentation of Microscopes to Subiaco Primary

School - Ken & Di Collins with Principal Carolyn

You may be interested

to know that for the

50th Anniversary of

Rotary in 1955,

spearheaded by the

Rotary Club of Perth,

the gift to the people of

WA was the Medical

School. The funds

raised to bring this

project to fruition was

admirable and since its

opening in 1958 all

doctors trained here in

WA (up until the

facility at Notre Dame)

have been because of

this project. A project

with significant

benefits to all West

Australians.
