2 Introduction This document is a technical overview of the RBS 2409 Pico.

2.1 RBS 2409 – a member of the RBS 2000 family

The RBS 2409 Pico is an indoor product and the smallest RBS released from Ericsson. RBS 2409 is a complete radio base station built on one signed circuit board, based on the world leading RBS 2000 platform. RBS 2409 uses Abis over IP to significantly reduce the cost of backhaul transmission.

RBS 2409 Pico does open new business opportunities for Operators where they will be able to offer: Dedicated Capacity, Dedicated Coverage and Dedicated Services to Small and Medium Enterprises.

Of course the RBS 2409 Pico will be excellent to fill coverage holes in the Macro Network or build coverage in places where earlier not cost efficient, i.e. parking garage.

The RBS2409 can also be used as a capacity/coverage enhancer for Ericsson In-Building Solution. The external antenna option makes it possible to have the RBS2409 feeding a small Distributed Antenna System (DAS) covering a small office or business premises instead of using the more common and non capacity improving RF repeater based solution.

The Pico RBS is connected to the Operators regular BSC as any other RBS and all applicable BSS features that Ericsson has developed during the last 15 years are supported.

RBS 2409 can be used either as a stand-alone base station (integrated antenna) or as a driver of a distributed antenna system (DAS). The stand-alone configuration is suitable for coverage of limited parts of a building, especially in open areas.

RBS 2409 is designed to support very smooth installation and commissioning.

2.2 Key Features supported RBS 2409 supports the following key features:

• GPRS support (CS-1 to CS-4) • EGPRS (MCS-1 to MCS-9) • EDGE • Dynamic power regulation • Discontinuous transmission • Encryption/ciphering (A5/1, A5/2 or A5/3) • Ethernet IP transmission interface • IP Security

RBS 2409 does not support the following main features:

• Synthesizer Frequency hopping • Base band frequency hopping • Receiver diversity • E1 and T1 transmission interface • GPS synchronisation • Transmission Multidrop bypass • TG synchronisation

Other specific characteristics of the RBS 2409 are:

• The RBS supports 1 TRX and 2 TRX configurations. • The RBS is designed to apply to the most common AC power supply

voltages. • One integral antenna with omni coverage is integrated in the RBS. • One connector is provided for connection of external antennas. • The RBS is designed for a technical lifetime of 20 years (24h operation). • The RBS is designed to operate in a temperature environment of

+5 to +40 °C.

3 RBS 2409 Architecture

3.1 Overview All circuitry (except the PSU-AC-41) is integrated on one PCB (the BSB) that consists of the following main parts:

- STN HW (similar function as a PSTU)

- CF HW (similar function as a DXU)

- TRX (similar function as a TRU but a combiner/filter has been added)

- DC/DC converters

- Integrated antenna

RBS 2409 may be mounted on a wall or hanging from a ceiling. In either case it must be located vertically for cooling reasons.

RBS 2409 is designed for AC Power Supply only and an external PSU-AC-41 is included in the product package. A separate battery backup unit may be included as an option.

A 2 TRX configuration requires 2 BSU to be connected via the external Y-link, where one BSU is run in master mode and one in slave mode. The same product is used regardless of mode.

As STN HW, CF HW and TRX are located at the same PCB (the BSB), many interfaces that in a Macro RBS are run via cables and backplanes between different physical RUs, are in RBS 2409 routed internally at the BSB.

The cooling principle of RBS 2409 is natural convection. The rear cover has slots for ventilation upwards and downwards, to allow airflow through the heat sinks.

3.2 Terminology RBS 2409 is a complete RBS implemented as either;

- In 1 TRX configurations, two physical units; one BSU and one PSU-AC-41; or

- In 2 TRX configurations, four physical units; two BSU (including a Y-link cable) and two PSU-AC-41s.

3.3 Building Practice The BSU is built up in two steps; first as a subassembly (see Figure 3 ) and in the second step as a complete unit (see Figure 4).

Figure 3 BSU subassembly major parts (figure is for orientation only, actual implementation may differ).

The BSU subassembly consists of the following major parts (referring to position numbers in Figure 3).

1. Heat sinks

2. Internal antenna jumper

3. BSB

4. Shielding cover, including cavities for BSB parts that require shielding.

In order to access locking screw for cable cover, connectors, marking labels and LEDs, the front cover is slid down as shown in Figure 7. LEDs are not visible during normal operation.

Figure 7, Front cover slid down to access MMI and connectors.

To protect from unauthorized access, the RBS is equipped with a device that requires insertion of a tool to unlock the front cover, on the left and right side of the unit. The tool may be a small screwdriver or e.g. a nail. The principle of the locking mechanism is shown in Figure 8.

Figure 8, Principle of front cover locking mechanism.

3.4 Connections The external connectors are located at the top of the unit, see Figure 9. All external connectors except the test connectors are possible to access with the front cover opened.

The connectors on the BSB are located at the same position independently of frequency to ensure that the same plastic covers and the same testing fixtures can be used for different variants of the product.

Figure 9 Location of connectors (figure is for orientation only, actual implementation may differ). Note: AC connector is located at PSU-AC-41.

3.5 Hardware Subunits 3.5.1 Subunits inside RBS 2409

The RBS 2409 consists of the subunits described in this chapter.

Base Station Unit (BSU)

The BSU includes all the HW required for the functionality of a complete RBS, implemented as one physical unit. It is designed for 12 VDC Power supply.
