“It’s another great day in Riviera Bay!”

Due to a few computer glitches of mine, this issue is com-ing out a little later than I would have wanted it out, but

I’m doing the best I can. Speaking of that, we got a lot accom-plished this year. Among other things, we opened our new & improved , our annual set records for the most trash collected, most volunteers, and longest cleanup, we won $500 for having the

in the Festival of States parade, we have a great work-ing relationship with every official in the city, county and state (everybody knows the RBCA now), we “ and twice cleaned , we started a group, we had 2 great , and we had many residents attend our

and events.Donna and I were very active representing our neighbor-

hood at several city meetings and functions, and I’m looking forward to having a great on Nov 18th. (It still continues to amaze me though that more people don’t participate in these events.) Our longest running tradition is

coming up real soon on , of lighting along our streets and canals and our evening

Please give some thought to the coming up on Jan 27th, because as you can see, we’ve taken on a lot more projects and are in real need of more help to keep our neighborhood the best it can be.

JOSHUA HOUSE TOY DRIVE

For the past ten years I have been writing this article for the RBCA newsletter to remind everyone about my

family’s Joshua House Toy Drive. This year I am going off to college to pursue a career in child advocacy so I can further help the children of Joshua House and other  children in need. My parents, however, are continuing the Joshua House Toy Drive here.

Joshua House is a facility in Tampa for abused children and sibling groups. My parents adopted me from Joshua House 11 years ago when I was 7, so this toy drive is very near and dear to us. The goal at Joshua House is to give each child a few new toys and clothes to make their holiday as special as it can be.

The toys and clothes and other goodies can be dropped off at our house at

If you have any questions you can call Debby or Lance at or . We

hope this will be another awesome year for the Joshua House Toy Drive and we highly appreciate your kind support and very big hearts!!!

Thank you, Crystal Obst_______________________________________________

Auto Theft Prevention RalliesThe St. Petersburg Police Department in it’s effort to

reduce the number of auto thefts in our city, periodically conducts auto theft prevention rallies at which we will present a free “Club” to any owner of a “high theft” vehicle (as determined by auto thefts within our city) or who has been the victim of an auto theft.

To qualify for this, a person must live or work in the City of St. Petersburg and have in their possession a valid driver’s license and vehicle registration at the time the club is received.

A high theft vehicle is:• Dodge & Chrysler Products (Any Year)• Saturn 1991-1996• General Motors late 1980’s to 1998• Nissan Altima 1991-1997• Toyota Camry 1988-1999• Honda Accord 1990-1999• Ford - Taurus, Pick-ups, Explorers (Any Year)

The main purpose of this annual event is to say “THANK YOU” and to show our APPRECIATION for all that our local Police & Fire Heros do to keep us safe and help us to retain our title of “THE BESTEST NEIGHBORHOOD IN ALL OF

ST PETE.” On a “way too hot” Sept 11th this year, we still had over 150 people attend, along with several Council members and political candidates. Many Police Officers and Fire Fighters and their families joined us to enjoy tons of great food and the excellent entertainment provided by TASCO. We had a DJ, a Bouncy House, Boxing Ring & Obstacle course, Police & Fire Vehicles, and a K9 demonstration. We presented “Community Appreciation” plaques to the Fossil Park, Gateway, and NorthShore Fire Stations, our 1st, 2nd, and 3rd responders, and to the St Pete Police Dept for all their dedication, service, and support to our community. It was great to see how many of our local area merchants donated food and drinks and/or prizes for our Auction and Raffle. Many, many thanks go out to everybody that helped to make this event such a success this year.

For those not familiar with the custom, we have been beautifying the area for the past twenty-five years by

decorating at Christmas time with the “farolitos” (little beacons).  This beautiful custom has come to us from our Spanish southern neighbors and each year is spreading more throughout the country.  In ancient times, luminaries were built along the roads to light the way for trav-elers (Joseph and Mary and the shepherds) enroute to Bethlehem.  The squat candles in the paper bag of sand that we use today came to us from New Mexico where the “farolitos” were first used and are called by the Indians “the golden blossoms”.  Christmas Eve is truly an impres-sive sight when whole neighborhoods are embraced in the soft candlelight.

The candles are six (6) for $5.00 with bags.  They should be equally placed along the street and canals (if your lot is on the water they really help to guide the boat parade) and are lit Christmas Eve at 7:00 pm. They usually burn until about midnight.  In case of rain, they are lit on Christmas evening.  This custom was not created to make money, but for a service to all to help beautify the area and convey the Christmas spirit.

Turn the top of the bag over three (3) times.  Crease well to stiffen the bag.  Fill 1/3 full with sand.  Place the

Christmas Eve Luminaries candle in the center straight.  Place on flat surface.  Trim the wick if long so the bag doesn’t catch on fire.  For the candle to burn longer, make sure they are straight so a pud-dle of wax forms around the wick.  Also if you refrigerate the candles for a day before burning, it makes them burn longer.

The candles will be delivered to the homes of the dis-tributors around Thanksgiving.  The candle distributors are

those who volunteered last year (and for which I thank them most heartily for their efforts).  The vol-unteers will be around to your homes and the candles will be avail-able until Christmas Eve.  If a dis-tributor misses you in your area, you can go to their residence and pick up the candles.  Also remem-ber, these are your neighbors deliv-

ering candles and all are volunteers.  Please don’t give them a hard time; they don’t buy the candles nor set the price, and they don’t make a penny doing this for you!  Once again, let’s have a terrific Christmas Eve Luminary showing.  We actually hear from people all over St. Petersburg that they look forward to seeing our display each year.  Let’s not disappoint them.If you have questions, problems, or want to purchase in large case quantities, please contact Jean Tyack 9200 Sun Isle Dr. N.E.  Her phone number is 576-9300

CHRISTMAS EVE CANDLE DISTRIBUTORS

It’s that time of year again and we need a few volunteers for a couple of areas.  Even if all you can do is store candles at your

house for residents to stop by and pickup, or help the volunteers already assigned to your street.

This is a great way to meet your neighbors.  Please call

to volunteer.

At our we addressed District 2 infrastructure concerns and complaints, with

District 2 Councilman Jim Kennedy and Mike Connors, St Pete’s Public Works Administrator.  Besides the two drainage improvement projects being worked on:  A) on 89th Ave N., two underground vaults, B) on Riverside Drive N., new tidal flex valve,  we found out that there is another area that has a high tide flooding issue on 80th and 81st Ave N & Riverside Dr N. I’ve lived in the neighborhood for over 15 years now and didn’t know there was an issue in this area. Please don’t assume we know every problem area or item that needs to be fixed in our neighborhood of over 1,250 homes. Unless you bring a concern to the Neighborhood Association Meetings or address it with the City officials, we can’t help fix the problems we don’t know about.

- meet your sector community service and crime prevention officers as well as representatives from city departments. The Meeting starts at 5:30PM till all questions are answered. This is your opportunity to voice your concerns about anything having to do with the police or city personnel. Dec. 6, at     Roberts Community Center, 1246 50th Avenue North, 5:30 – 7 pm.  Our was cancelled by the City, the night before because the City ran out of mulch. We are still inves-tigating trying to do our own re-mulching project at the play-ground and trying to mulch in the grassy area between the building and the playground. Keep an eye out for updates.

Current Projects & Follow-Ups   We had another successful .  I don’t know how many participated on Sunday, but Friday morning and all day Saturday we saw a huge crowd of people on our streets. I’ve already heard from Riviera Bay Sub-Division and also the group on Weedon Isle Dr who want to participate with us dur-ing the Spring Yard Sale which should be either the 1st week-end in March or April. All depends on the low tides and our annual canal clean-up event.  On October 9th The RBCA completed the 2nd clean-up of our on 83rd Avenue N, east of 4th Street North to the San Martin Bridge. We had 12 people turn out and collected 40 Lbs of trash. I want to thank everyone who turned out to participate. Our next clean-up will be in the Spring.   - We are always looking for volunteers, please call me (727-579-3644) if you are interested in becoming a board member or wish to run for the President, Vice President, Treasurer, Chairperson or Newsletter Coordinator. We try for 6 General Meetings, 6 Board Meetings and our annual events which include the Spring & Fall Yard Sales, Canal Clean-up, Easter Egg Hunt/Ice Cream Social, Police & Fire Hero Appreciation/Neighborhood Picnic, Thanksgiving Diner and our Holiday Candle Display & Christmas Eve Boat Parade. We also hope to add the Neighborhood Float in the “Festival of States Parade” as a annual event. The RBCA won best neighborhood float last year. In all, we ask the volunteers to attend the general and board meeting and participate in most of the events. We understand that it’s difficult for everyone to be available for all the events, but even if you attended the meeting and help for at least 1 hour at the events, it’s only about 20 hours over the next 12 months.

, District 2

Council Member Kennedy’s Corner

Thank you for the opportunity to contribute to your monthly newsletter. In this month’s issue, I would

like to update you on the North Bay Trail. The North Bay Trail along 1st Street North is under

construction. The section from 30th Avenue North to 54th Avenue North will be completed by late Spring 2011. The section from 54th Avenue to 78th Avenue North will begin active construction after the first of the year, and is expected to be completed by the end of 2011. The concrete trail is generally 12’ wide, except at locations where the right-of-way is constrained. In those instances, we’re planning to build the path as wide as possible within the existing right-of-way. Funding for the project

is made possible through the Transportation Enhancement program by the Federal Highway Administration which is administered locally by the Florida Department of Transportation.

On another note, the side-path for pedestrians and bicyclists along Gandy Blvd from Pelican Sound to the bridge is under construction and is expected to be completed by the end of July 2011. It is 12’ wide and runs along the north side of Gandy Blvd.

If you have any questions; please feel free to call my office at (727) 893-7117.

Sad NewsWe would like to send our sincere condolence’s to Jenny Healy and her family. Jenny’s husband Mal passed away suddenly on October 17th. Jenny has been involved with the RBCA since it started, most of you would know her as the friendly face dishing out the RBCA Thanksgiving dinner every year. Most neighbors know Mal as the good looking white haired gentleman who walked the neighborhood dogs around 94th Street N. Mal always had a smile and happy greeting for everyone. He will be missed by everyone.
