How to Stop Procrastinating on
Your Goals by Using theSeinfeld Strategy
by James Clear Get free updates of new posts here
Jerry Seinfeld is one of the most successful comedians of all
time.
He is regarded as one of the Top 100 Comedians of ll!Time"
by Comedy Central# He was also the co!creator and co!writer
of Seinfeld$ the long!running sitcom which has recei%ed
numerous awards and was claimed to ha%e the Top T&
'pisode of ll!Time" as rated byTV Guide#
ccording to Forbesmaga(ine$ Seinfeld reached his pea) in
earnings when he made *+,- million dollars in 1../# es$ that
was in one year# 2o$ that3s not a typo#4 full 10 years later$ in
+00/$ Seinfeld was still pulling in a cool */5 million per year#
6y almost any measure of wealth$ popularity$ and critical
acclaim$ Jerry Seinfeld is among the most successful
comedians$ writers$ and actors of his generation#
Howe%er$ what is most impressi%e about Seinfeld3s career isn3t
the awards$ the earnings$ or the special moments it3s the
remar)able consistency of it all# Show after show$ year after
year$ he performs$ creates$ and entertains at an incredibly high
standard# Jerry Seinfeld produces with a le%el of consistency
that most of us wish we could bring to our daily wor)#

for some reason or another we still procrastinate on them#
9hat3s the di;erence< 9hat strategies does Jerry Seinfeld use
to beat procrastination and consistently produce =uality wor)et3s tal) about how you can use the Seinfeld Strategy in your
life@

bogged down with the urgencies of daily life and 8ghts a
constant battle between procrastination and moti%ation#
9hile most people get demoti%ated and o;!trac) after a bad
performance$ a bad wor)out$ or simply a bad day at wor)$ top
performers settle right bac) into their pattern the ne:t day#
The Seinfeld Strategy wor)s because it helps to ta)e the focus
o; of each indi%idual performance and puts the emphasis on
the process instead# 7t3s not about how you feel$ how inspired
you are$ or how brilliant your wor) is that day# 7nstead$ it3s Aust
about not brea)ing the chain#"
ll you ha%e to do to apply this strategy to your own life is pic)
up a calendar here3s an ine:pensi%e one4 and start your chain#
A Word of Warning
There is one ca%eat with the Seinfeld Strategy# ou need to pic)
a tas) that is meaningful enough to ma)e a di;erence$ butsimple enough that you can get it done#
7t would be wonderful if you could write 10 pages a day for
your boo)$ but that3s not a sustainable chain to build# Similarly$
it sounds great in theory to be able to deadlift li)e a maniac
e%ery day$ but in practice you3ll probably be o%ertrained and
burnt out#
So step one is to choose a tas) that is simple enough to be
sustainable# t the same time$ you ha%e to ma)e sure that
your actions are meaningful enough to matter#

Bor e:ample$ researching good Ao)es each day is simple$ but
you3re ne%er going to write a Ao)e by merely researching#
That3s why the process of writing is a better choice# 9riting can
actually produce a meaningful result$ e%en when it3s done in
small doses#
Similarly$ doing 10 pushups per day could be simple and
meaningful depending on your le%el of 8tness# 7t will actually
ma)e you stronger# eanwhile$ reading a 8tness boo) each day
is simple$ but it won3t actually get you in better shape#
Choose tas)s that are simple to maintain and capable of
producing the outcome you want#
nother way of saying this is to focus on actions and not
motions$ which is a concept that 7 e:plained in this articleDThe
ista)e That Smart Eeople a)e
Mastery Follows Consistency
The central =uestion that ties our community together and
what 7 try to write about e%ery onday and Thursday is
how do you li%e a healthy life

Fon3t brea) the chain on your wor)outs and you3ll 8nd that you
get 8t rather =uic)ly#
Fon3t brea) the chain in your business and you3ll 8nd that
results come much faster#
Fon3t brea) the chain in your artistic pursuits and you3ll 8nd
that you will produce creati%e wor) on a regular basis#
So often$ we assume that e:cellence re=uires a monumental
e;ort and that our lofty goals demand incredible doses of
willpower and moti%ation# 6ut really$ all we need is dedicationto small$ manageable tas)s# astery follows consistency#
P.S.
Bor the last eight months 73%e written a new article e%ery
onday and Thursday without missing a beat# Simply setting a
schedule has helped me )eep that pace and 7 plan to )eep it as
we mo%e forward#
6ut 7 also want to graduate my writing habits to the ne:t le%el
and start writing 1$000 words each day# Some of those words
will turn into boo)s and courses$ and some of will continue to
be my onday and Thursday posts#
y 1$000!words!per!day" chain is currently at # 7 made it to
5 last wee) before brea)ing it for a day#4
ou may ha%e a couple false starts yourself$ but e%entually 73m
hoping that both you and 7 can simply tell oursel%es$ Fon3t
brea) the chain#"
