The International Board for Plant Genetic Resources (IBPGR) is an autonomous International scientific organization under the aegis of the Consultative Group on Ynternational Agricultural Research (CGIAR). The IBPGR was ertablished by the CGIAR in 1974. The basic function of the IBPGR is to promote and coordinate an international network of genetic resources cantres to .urther the collection, cunservation, documentation, evaluation and use of plart garmplasm and thereby contriuute to rai:ing the standard of living and welfare of people throu.out the world. Financial support for the core programnme is provided -y the Governments of Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, China, Denmark, France, Federz) Republic of Germany. India, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, Noraay, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom, and the USA us well as the :'orld Bank. FAO ot the United Nations provides the Headquarters.
The designations employed, and the presentation of material in this Directory, do not Imply the expression of any opinion whatsoever on the part of the International Board for Plant Genetic Resources (IBPGR) or the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Naticns (FAO) concerning the legal status of any country, territory, city or area or of Its authoritils, or concerning the delimitation of Its frontiers or boundaries.

Foreword to the Second Edition
This edition replaces the first one published six years ago. The format differs from the first edition in several respects. Most obvious is the use of a standard set of headings for each entry, with each being included even whore no Information was available to IBPGR. It is hoped that there will be food-back to IBPCR from the users t*o fill in those Saps. Individual readers may also wish to treat their directory as a "working copy" by fiiling in information as it becomes available to them.
Regarding the crops included in this directory, emphasis has been placid on the stsple crops of aroids, cassava, potato, sweet potato and yams. Additionally, a catch-all section called 'others' was included to cover other root crops of local importance, such as the Andean root crops (nca, ulluca, etc.), and other root crops of minor importance. Yam-bean is Included, although strictly speaking it would belong in the legume directory, whilst winged bean is not included hoer but In the legume directory instead. rwo other root crops have been omitted; turnips tre placed, for the purpose of IBPGR directories, with the vegetables, and beets placed with nduStrial
crops.
The coverage of wild specieg is extensive wherever details have been supplied or could be gle....4 from published literature, in order to make the directory ap comprehensive as possible on details of what material is held where.
As a result of the inclusion of more wild species the number of species names in the index has increased significantly from the first edition. rn those cases where it has not been possible to irerify all the binomials used, they have been included as cited by curators. Thus, where a name has boon used that is generally regarded as no longer valid for that species, it has been retained as being the name used by the curator and, hence, the name used to identify accessions in that collection.
It is the hope of TOPGR that this directory will prove useful, and that it will act as a catalyst In stimulating interest in the conservation and use of the gonotic resources of root and tuber crops.

This project is coordinating work on root crops in the South Pacific and one aim is to
increase awareness of their potential for the region. To this end a series of 'Field
Documents' have been published, and it is from them that some of the Information for this
Directory has been derived. They include:
1/ Passers, C., 1984. A root crop bibitography. (RAS/83/O01 Field Document 4);
2/ Jackson, G., Ikn. B., & Firman, I., 1984. Guidolines for the Transfer of Root Crop Germplasm. (RAS/83/001 Field Documfnt 6);
3/ Breen, J7., 1984. Rosister of Root Crop Hesoarch Workers in the Pacific Region.
(RAS/83/001 Field Document 1); and 4/ Jackson, C. & Breen, J., 1985. Collecting, DoscribinK and Evaluating Root Crops.
(RAS/83/001 Field Document 8).
For further information about theose doctumonts contact the Project Manager at the above address. With IBPGR support, the Project is currently collecting and collating in
computerized form all available data on root crops colloctions ir, the South Pacific. and the resulting catalogue is likely to be published in 1986. The characterization data will
be available on computer diskette (Apple Ir' computer, 5" disc, CP/M operating system) from
