Spring has arrived, well sort of. There have been a few days with some warmth and they have stirred some of us from our hibernation. Our latest newsletter is a dynamic mix of wines to suit all types of weather and moods. The one thing that stands out with this selection is the amazing value. Some of our panel members are old enough to remember the prices of wine two decades ago and there is not a great difference today, especially from new labels which are trying desperately to successfully market their product. We enjoyed them, trust you will as well. Cheers! Rod Properjohn

The Pawn Wine Co. 2014 ‘El Desperado’ Sangiovese Tempranillo Shiraz Adelaide HillsWe picked this as a neat example of Chianti at our regular masked tasting and were rapt to see it was a great-value Adelaide Hills product. The sangiovese (Chianti) varietal fruit is obvious and the wine is long in the mouth, medium weighted, is rustic with spicy and savoury fruit and is a terrific quaffer, even in its youth. Astonishing value and perfect with
red-sauce pasta.

West Cape Howe 2015‘Two Peeps’ Sauvignon Blanc Semillon
AlbanyBursting with tropical fruit laced liberally with passionfruit and guava on the nose. It’s lively and so fruity. The palate delivers a decent belt of fruit intensity, driven to a long finish by a crisp fine acidity. This is a made-to-drink-now wine offering great value at this price. Such
beautiful texture and mouth feel.

Amelia Park 2012Cabernet Merlot Margaret River
Boy, these guys are turning out some great wines across all price points. This one offers plenty for this price. Such a stylish and impressive expression of this Margaret River blend. Firm line of cabernet and a juicy fruity middle of merlot complete a wine that says drink me. A slightly minty lift on the nose adds further interest while the smooth and
seamless palate is a feature.$2399 each in any six

Picardy 2014Sauvignon Blanc Semillon
PembertonMade entirely from Pemberton fruit, 80% sav blanc and 20% semillon from the Picardy vineyard itself. The two varieties were co-fermented and the result is a minerally-textured long palate with just a little funk and lively sweet fruit to add to the mouthfeel. Marry this to a plate of hot-smoked wahoo or mackerel
for a taste experience.

Hogshead 2014‘Old Vine’ ShirazSouth Australia
Here’s a label that would scare the kids off drinking wine forever. The stuff inside the bottle is kinder however with fleshy red fruits, pepper and spice, seductive chocolate and smooth balance. We would drink this in its youth and there is no better time than the present. An absolute doozey with the next alfresco barbecue, and the
value is crazy.
$1499 each in any six$16.99 single bottle
Jack Estate 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon
CoonawarraMedium red in colour this excites the olfactory senses with black fruits, cedar, damp earth and tobacco and the middle-weight palate has plenty of balance with generous juicy fruits, sandy tannins and acid finish. We love 2012 Coonawarra reds and this wine, at the price, is simply too good to miss. Marvellous
with a rack of pink lamb.
$1799 each in any six$19.99 single bottle
Pikes 2013 ‘The Assemblage’Shiraz Mourvedre Grenache
Clare ValleyMade from the classical Rhone trio of red varieties, this Clare Valley wine has a bundle of spicy plum aromatics and the palate is a wealth of juicy fruits - plum, dark cherry and blueberry. Chocolate and a little earthiness enrich the palate and the oak in the wine is covert and plays no major part. A lovely drink, especially with pork sausages and a
dollop of Dijon mustard.
$1799 each in any six$19.99 single bottle
Hither & Yon 2014 Monastrell
McLaren ValeMonastrell is a widely-planted red variety in Spain and generally makes a sturdy meaty macho style of table wine. It is often called mataro in Australia and this McLaren Vale wine mirrors the Spanish style. It is bold and square-shouldered with firm tannins, tons of spice and black fruit, although it’s medium weighted and subtle with oak. Different and worth a punt, especially with a gutsy
meat casserole.

Riposte 2014‘The Dagger’ Pinot Noir
Adelaide HillsBy Tim Knappstein and from the Adelaide Hills, this is a youthful, yet very drinkable young pinot. There is the savoury sweaty nose of pinot that we enjoy and it has inherent cherry and strawberry fruit, some spice, subtle tannins and good length to a cleansing finish. Tim suggests you enjoy this in its youth and we recommend you serve it
with a succulent breast of duck.
$2199 each in any six$23.99 single bottle
Fontanafredda Ebbio 2012 Langhe Nebbiolo
ItalyNebbiolo is a celebrated red grape variety in Italy and just may be its most noble. This is an early-drinking neb from Piedmont in the north-west, it’s a lightish-coloured red and that’s normal and has a sweet floral nose with a waft of spice and nuts. The palate is a relaxed drinkable red of dark cherry fruit, its well-weighted, has firm tannins and finishing acids. Serve with oxtail and mushrooms, a
Piemontese classic.
$2399 each in any six$25.99 single bottle
S.C. Pannell 2014 Tempranillo Touriga
McLaren ValeWe enjoy Pannell’s wines especially when he starts messing around with the Iberian red varieties. He uses tempranillo here to impart savoury cherry fruit to the medium-weighted wine and touriga to add floral aromatics and fleshy ripe plummy characters. There is no overt oak to complicate matters and the wine is a juicy drink-soon style.
Try with a meaty paella.
$2599 each in any six$27.99 single bottle
Hentley Farm 2014Shiraz
Barossa ValleyFor the Barossa shiraz punters out there who can’t resist a deep ruby colour and full ripe plummy flavours in their red wine. There are also grainy tannins, chocolate, licorice and a solid structure here and the value of the wine is indisputable. Slot a steak and kidney pie in the oven and enjoy with a glass of this on a cool day, there will still be a few
of those remaining in the year.
$2599 each in any six$28.99 single bottle
Majella 2012Cabernet Sauvignon
CoonawarraA top label that rarely disappoints and this is from a magic vintage which is a bonus. The wine is opulent for such a cool region as Coonawarra, there is a truckload of blackcurrant fruit, ripe tannins, chocolate and a weighty mass of sweet vanilla oak. This is not for wimps, there are no leafy green or subtle characters in this. Suits a slowly- cooked flavourful
shoulder of lamb.
$3399 each in any six$36.99 single bottle
Hurley Vineyard 2012 ‘Hommage’ Pinot Noir Mornington Peninsula
Our favourite piece of Aussie pinot earth sits near the Balnarring village on the Mornington Peninsula. Hommage is a tiny one third of the Hurley Vineyard there and the 2012 wine is brilliant. Mid garnet in colour, the nose has cherry fruit, spicy oak and a bucketful of funk and then the palate is a wild party of lively juicy flavours, savoury complexity, marvellous balance and lasts for
about a week in the mouth.
$4799 each in any six$52.99 single bottle
Amelia Park 2015Semillon Sauvignon Blanc
Margaret RiverAn attractive fresh clean style which made this Margaret River blend so popular when it first hit the market a couple of decades ago. Although reasonably new in the region, Amelia Park has harnessed the vibrant regional fruit and this wine shows lemon and lime, stone fruit, youthful passionfruit characters and crunching acidity.
Salt and pepper squid anyone?
$1699 each in any six$18.99 single bottle
Babich 2014Sauvignon Blanc
MarlboroughA brilliant straw colour with a flash of youthful green, this is a riper style of Kiwi savvy. The aromatics are subdued but the palate is alive with tropical fruits and some hay, gooseberry and grassy characters are there to advertise its varietal origin. We love the freshness and balance. Smart wine with whiting
fillets and a light salad.
$1799 each in any six$19.99 single bottle
Preveli 201 ‘Wild Thing’ Sauvignon Blanc
Margaret RiverThis Margaret River white was fermented with wild or indigenous yeast and that imparts a little funkiness’ while the oak barrels in which fermentation took place add their piece of smoky complexity. It’s cleverly done, the grassy fruit is not overpowered by the winemaking influence and the wine is so much more interesting because of it.
Drink with smoked cod patties.
$2199 each in any six$23.99 single bottle
Dukes 2015‘Single Vineyard’ Riesling
PorongurupHere’s a youthful austere acidic style of riesling from the Porongurup subregion of the Great Southern. It’s light in colour, has lifted citrus fruits and perfumed aromatics and a palate that is dry, clean as a whistle and as long as netballer’s arm. Drink now or it will mature in
the bottle if desired.
$2199 each in any six$24.99 single bottle
Dr Loosen 2014Riesling Germany
Decent riesling is generally an expensive commodity in Germany and this wine attracts, not only because of its price, but also its quality. Although the Mosel 2014 vintage was a little wet, there were good wines made, including this. You’ll notice a fresh floral aromatic lift on the nose and a lengthy palate of delicate citrus, a dollop of sweetness and a necessary
cleansing acidity to finish.
$2199 each in any six$24.99 single bottle
Rieslingfreak 2014No.2 Riesling Clare Valley
This is a cracker from Polish Hill in the renowned riesling region of Clare. There’s a bundle of grapefruit here along with lime juice, a mineral spine that holds the wine together and crunchy acid completes the picture. It’s dry and may be drunk now in its infancy or cellared with confidence. Fresh yabby and a lime juice dressing would work well with
a glass of No.2.
$2999 each in any six$32.99 single bottle
Ad Hoc 2014‘Hen & Chicken’ Chardonnay
PembertonFrom Pemberton and Larry Cherubino, this youngster packs a punch. At this stage the oak component is very obvious both on the nose and palate and it will settle down in time and integrate with the stone fruit, citrus and light mealy notes. Drink in six months and then over the next three years. Good value and would work alongside roasted pork belly with a generous
cover of crackling.
$1799 each in any six$19.99 single bottle
d’Arenberg 2013‘The Lucky Lizard’ Chardonnay
PembertonWe love the stone fruit, citrus and the well-balanced oak in this chardy and oat meal and nutty textures add an extra dimension to the palate. It’s a modern style with a mineral edge but still has a bundle of flavour and the cool Adelaide Hills fruit gives the wine ample length and acidity. Try with a spit-
roasted chook and all the extras.
$2999 each in any six$33.99 single bottle
Chateau des Ferrages 2013‘Cuvée Roumery’
Côtes de Provence Rose FranceThe feminine bottle shape, the colourless glass, salmon/onion skin coloured wine and smart label add up to one classy introduction. It’s a dry savoury rosé wine from Provence in the south of France and is a classic luncheon style. A drink-in-its-youth wine and we would nail this before the end of summer and
it’s best chilled to 5 - 6 degrees.

Picardy is one of Australia’s leading premium boutique wine producers, established in 1993 in the Pemberton region of Western Australia. Owned and operated by Bill, Sandra, and Dan Pannell who were pioneers of the Margaret River region, establishing Moss Wood vineyard and winery in 1969. Moss Wood went on to be a driving force in establishing Margaret River as one of Australia’s important growing regions. Picardy strives to continue this tradition of wine making quality and excellence. All wines bearing the Picardy label are entirely from our single vineyard property in Pemberton. Picardy is situated in the tranquil region of Pemberton on deep gravelly loamy soils. The region offers high altitude and close proximity to the ocean, thereby providing ideal conditions for cool climate wine production. The winery follows sustainable management practices. All Picardy fruit is estate grown, unirrigated, cane-pruned and handpicked.

The first glassmaking “manual” dates back to around 650 BC. By 323 BC the Romans and Greeks began experimentation with tablewares. Constant discoveries lead to the introduction of manganese dioxide to the silica sand, which produced a clear material for production. Glass became the Roman plastic, and glass containers produced in Alexandria spread throughout the Roman Empire. Ahh... bless the Romans!
by the GlassA wine press is a device used to extract juice from crushed grapes during the wine making process. Recently a wine press was unearthed in Armenia, stained with red wine it dated back 6,000 years. Now thats vintage!

Drinking small quantities of alcohol (less than one drink in women and two in men) is associated with a decreased risk of heart disease, stroke, diabetes mellitus, and early death. Drinking more than this amount; however, increases the risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, atrial fibrillation, and stroke. Our recommendation - quality over quantity - see within.
There is not a wine bigot to be found amongst the Panel. A dedicated love of quality, transends all boarders and the globe when it comes to this mixed bunch of palates. The appreciation of the art of making wine compells a truly international focus.
