Mar�nBlaser,whoisChairofMedicineandProfessorofMicrobiologyatNewYorkUniversity,commentedthisweekthatrecentgastrointes�nalstudiesaredemonstra�ngtheside-effectsaremuchlongerlas�ng–evenbeyondalife�me.

“Doctorsprescribean�bio�cs.Whenpa�entstakethem,theythinkthattherearenolong-termeffects.Theythinktheeffectsareshortterm.Thereisevidencethatfriendlybacterianeverrecovers.For150millionyearsmammalshavebeengivingbirthtotheirliveyoung,whetherit’sgorillasorhumans,andthemother’sbacteriaaretransferredtothenextgenera�on.Andwe’redoingthingsthatarechangingthesetransfers.”

Ifcurrenttrendscon�nue,halfofU.S.adultswillbeobeseby2030.

ColumbiaUniversityresearcherClaireWang,PhD,saidatanewsbriefingonWednesdaythatobeseadultrateswillclimbfromonethirdtoonehalfoverthenexttwentyyears.

Theprojectedfiguresalsoes�matethatrisingobesitywillleadto8millionnewcasesofdiabetes,6.8millionaddi�onalcasesofheartdiseaseandstroke,andhalfamillioninstancesofcancer.ThisisexpectedtocosttheUShealthcaresystemanextra$66billioneveryyear.

ThreeoutoffourUShealth-careworkersusecomplementary/alterna�vemedicinetostayhealthy–withdoctors,nurses,assistants,healthcaretechniciansandadministratorsmorelikelytousethanthegeneralpublic.

LoriKnutson,execu�vedirectorofthePennyGeorgeIns�tuteforHealthandHealing,co-authoredthestudyandremarked:“Noonehasreallydonethissortofanalysisbefore,soIwasauthen�callysurprised.Butpleasantlyso,becauseclearlythismeansthatevenouthealth-careworkersarerecognisingtheneedforalterna�veop�onsinthesearchforwaystoimproveourhealthandlives.”

About38%ofAmericansusesomeformofcomplementarytherapy,suchasdietarysupplements,medita�on,chiroprac�ccare,Pilates,Ayurvedicandtradi�onalChinese.

“Ingeneral,Westernculturehasbelievedthatcomplementaryservicesandtechniquesaren’taswell-researchedandevidence-basedasconven�onalmedicine.Butthatiscertainlynolongerthecase.”

Australianresearchershavediscoveredalinkbetweenaperson’sabilitytotastefatandtheirweight.

Lastyear,DeakinUniversityinMelbournediscoveredthathumanshavea“sixthsense”whichdetectsthefatcontentoffoodandrespondswithafeelingofsa�ety.Theynowhavediscoveredalinkbetweenaperson’sabilitytotastefatandtheirweight.

ProfessorRussellKeastfromDeakinUniversitysaid,“Healthyweightpeopleactuallyrespondinadifferentwaytooverweightobesepeople.Ifyouwereahealthyweightandputonahigh-fatdiet,yourfatsensi�vitywoulddecrease.However,whenwelookedattheoverweightandobesesubjects,theyactuallyhadnoresponsetothehighlevelsoffatinfoods.”

Ea�ngahighfatdietdecreasestheabilityto“taste”fat,andthisleadstoover-ea�ng.However,thestudyisleadingtofurtherinves�ga�onintohowthebodycantrainthetastebudstobemoresensi�vetofat.

“Thegoodnewsoutofthelow-fatdietwasthateverybodyrespondedequally.Itdidn’tma�erifyouwerehealthyweightoroverweightobese,ifyouwentontothelow-fatdiet,youbecomemoresensi�vetofat.”

Raw Vegan of the WeekViaInthespringof2006,Viabegantoexploreanewwayofea�ng.Atthe�meshewas38andweighed165poundswith28%bodyfat.

Sheatealotofpastasandsauces,breads,meatsandchocolate.Shehadalwaysconsideredtheideaofbecomingvegetarianoutofcompassion.However,shewasconvincedthathumansneededmeat.Shedidn’tdrinkalcohol,so�drinksorcoffee,andshedranklotsofwater.Mostagreedthatshehadapre�yhealthydiet.

However,shesufferedfrommanyailments.Kidneystones,elevatedcholesterol,lowenergylevels,cons�pa�on,diarrhoea,colds/fluseveryfewmonths,depressionandpainfulmenstrualperiodswhichwouldleaveherconfinedtobed.Shealsosufferedallergicreac�onsandwasrushedtohospitalonmanyoccasionswithbreathingproblems.

A�ergoingrawvegan,inspringof2008sheweighed122withabodyfatpercentageof18%.Today,shehasnomoreallergies,kidneystones,lowercholesterol,regularbowelmovements,nomorecolds/flusandmildmenstrualperiods.

Viahasdescribedherrawveganlifestyleassome�meschallenging,undoingmanyyearsofcondi�oningandbadhabits.Shealsodealswithfamilyandfriendswhoques�onit.However,whensheconsidersherbody,andthinksofanimalrightsandtheenvironment,shealwayscomesbacktorawvegan.

IfI’vehadalongday,I’mtemptedtopointoutthecoincidencethattheprevious500peoplewhoaskedthatques�onusedtheexactsamesixwords–it’slikealltheprobersareaudi�oningtoactfromthesamescript,requiringnoindependentthought.ButthenIrememberthefirst�meIsawveganismasplausible,andIseeapersoninterestedinatopictheydon’treallyteachyouatschool,anddevelopmorecompassion.

Personalexperience,studyanddiscussionswithfellowveganshelpsconsiderablyindealingwithmeat-eaterprobing.Therearesomegeneralapproachesandlinesyoucanusetomaketheexperiencemoreenjoyableandconstruc�ve.

BeClearOnYourOutcome

Somevegansseeprobingasagi�-from-godopportunitytosharethebenefitsofveganism,othervegansseeitaslikebeinginthemiddleofagunfighttheyhavenodesiretopar�cipatein.
