Rate Problems

1. What is rate?

2. Give some examples of rates.

Let's explore how we can manipulate rates.

Ex(1) Using a new lawn mower Erica can mow the lawn in 2 hours.  Her sister Emily can mow the lawn in 3 hours using an old lawn mower.  How long will it take them to mow the lawn if they do it together?

We will set up the problem using a table to organize our information using the relationship:  Rate x Denominator = Numerator

Rate Denominator Numerator

Ex(2) Crane A can unload a container ship in 10 hours.  Crane B can unload the same ship in 14 hours.

a) If both cranes start at noon and work together, at what time is the ship unloaded?

Ex(2) Crane A can unload a container ship in 10 hours.  Crane B can unload the same ship in 14 hours.

b) If Crane A starts at noon and Crane B joins in at 2:00 PM, at what time is the ship unloaded?

Ex(3) A large pump can empty a pool in 7 hours less than a smaller second pump can.  Together, the pumps can empty the pool in 12 hours.  How long would it take to empty the pool if only the large pump was used?

Ex(4) A boat paddled downstream at 12 km/h, stopped for 2 hours of sightseeing, and paddled back at 18 km/h.  How far upstream did the boat travel if the total time for the trip, including the stop was 7 hours?

Ex(5) Susan is travelling to Florida for March Break.  The trip is 1500 km.  On her way home she drove an average of 10 km/hour slower and it took her 5 hours longer.  Determine what her average speeds were travelling to and from Florida
