Jazz April 2012 Legislature puts business-property tax cut on ballot TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – March 9, 2012 – A tax cut to help small businesses immediately – and larger ones down the road – will go before Florida voters this fall. The Florida Senate voted 40-0 on Thursday afternoon to put a proposed constitutional amendment on the ballot that would cut property taxes on machinery, furniture and other business equipment known as “tangible personal prop- erty.” The measure would immediately remove from the tax rolls any accounts with $50,000 or less worth of tangible property. That would ensure much of the estimated $20 million in annual tax savings would go to smaller busi- nesses, though larger firms that have multiple tangible-property accounts – some of which might have less than $50,000 worth of property in them – would also save some. Perhaps more significantly in the long term, the proposed amendment would give cities and counties the authority to create even larger tangible-property tax cuts in the future. The measure was a priority of Republican Gov. Rick Scott and the National Federation of Independent Business, a trade group that represents small businesses. But it was also supported by larger business groups, such as the Flor- ida Chamber of Commerce and the Manufacturers Association of Florida, which see it as a way to get bigger tangi- ble-property tax cuts in the future. The proposal, which was sponsored in the House by Republican Rep. Eric Eisnaugle of Orlando, would have origi- nally given the Legislature the authority to set even bigger tax breaks. But local governments balked and it was rewritten to give that power to cities and counties instead. Copyright © 2012 The Orlando Sentinel (Orlando, Fla.), Jason Garcia. Legislature puts business-property tax cut on ballot

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – March 9, 2012 – A tax cut to help small businesses immediately – and larger ones down the road – will go before Florida voters this fall. The Florida Senate voted 40-0 on Thursday afternoon to put a proposed constitutional amendment on the ballot that would cut property taxes on machinery, furniture and other business equipment known as “tangible personal prop-erty.” The measure would immediately remove from the tax rolls any accounts with $50,000 or less worth of tangible property. That would ensure much of the estimated $20 million in annual tax savings would go to smaller busi-nesses, though larger firms that have multiple tangible-property accounts – some of which might have less than $50,000 worth of property in them – would also save some. Perhaps more significantly in the long term, the proposed amendment would give cities and counties the authority to create even larger tangible-property tax cuts in the future. The measure was a priority of Republican Gov. Rick Scott and the National Federation of Independent Business, a trade group that represents small businesses. But it was also supported by larger business groups, such as the Flor-ida Chamber of Commerce and the Manufacturers Association of Florida, which see it as a way to get bigger tangi-ble-property tax cuts in the future. The proposal, which was sponsored in the House by Republican Rep. Eric Eisnaugle of Orlando, would have origi-nally given the Legislature the authority to set even bigger tax breaks. But local governments balked and it was rewritten to give that power to cities and counties instead. Copyright © 2012 The Orlando Sentinel (Orlando, Fla.), Jason Garcia. Dear REALTOR,

Our profession and the very core of America are under attack. Never before has the opportunity for Americans to

buy and own homes been so threatened. We are duty-bound to defend the social, cultural, and financial benefits

of American home ownership. I know out of the last eight recessions, six have risen from their economic malaise

because of reenergized home sales and increased construction. I know that in a country bleeding from unemploy-

ment, housing sales in America generate more than one million jobs annually. In America, with more than 300

million inhabitants, the 75 million home owning households pay 90 percent of all the personal income tax col-

lected. I know that home owners are healthier, their kids have less teen pregnancy, get better grades, get better jobs out

of college, and marriages are stronger. Home owners are more involved in their community, charities, and they

vote. Home ownership adds a ton of social and cultural benefits to this country, and those home owners literally

knit us together as Americans. I need your help! I am holding the great American REALTOR® Rally to Protect the American Dream of home own-

ership. On May 17 in Washington, DC we are asking REALTORS® to come from all over this country and partici-

pate. I personally am asking you to be there; to make the trip to Washington, DC and participate in the rally.

Stand with me and your fellow REALTORS® from every corner of America. I encourage you to join us on the morning of May 17. Your participation will make a difference in the success of

our effort. You have an opportunity to be a part of this historic event while voicing your concerns in the shadow of

the Capitol. You will send a huge message to your law makers for the rights of home owners and those that want

to be home owners in the future. And, that message is save and protect the American Dream!

NAR is coordinating buses to bring you to D.C. Tell me that you are willing to come and I will help you get here.

Just use the form on our REALTOR® Rally website - to say you will attend. Please be sure to make arrangements

for housing if you are coming in for the rally but not attending the Midyear Legislative Meetings & Trade Expo. It

is springtime in Washington, DC and housing fills up quickly! You must register to let us know you'll be there

so that we can plan for an accurate count of participants. Also learn more about the schedule of events and logis-

tics information about the day and things you can do in Washington, DC if you stay over.

We must promote, support and protect a sustainable, durable housing economy for generations to come. We will

show Congress that no one cares more about revitalizing and maintaining home ownership for future generations

than REALTORS® do. It’s not just for REALTORS®, it's not just for home owners, it’s the right thing to do for

America!

Moe Veissi 2012 NAR President
