Project Eliminate Progress Repo r t : Internationally, the Eliminate Project has reached$110 million in gifts and pledges. “That is an incredible victory!” states

Caitlin Bain of Kiwanis International Found-ation. About 50% of this amount of the pledgedhas been received.

Locally, our goal (based on our club’soriginal membership of 50) is $37,500. In oursecond year of the project we have contributed$21,511.68 already or an average of $430.23 of$750 per member.

Mothers and babies in 21 countries aredepending on Kiwanis to fulfill our pledges—sowe can turn promises into funding, and fundinginto lifesaving vaccines.

News From The Field

Kiwanis International and UNICEF areachieving amazing things through The EliminateProject. During the last five years, 19 countrieshave eliminated MNT. Equatorial Guinea andNiger plan to conduct MNT elimination surveysthis year. If success-ful, these countries couldbe the next to eliminate this cruel disease.

Those In Need of Prayer & Healing Evelyn is in our thoughts and prayers forpeace after losing her sister on March 22nd. Shealso has another relative with cancer that ishaving difficulties with her chemo treatment.

We continue to pray for the Dan’s familyespecially to his wife who still has a “long road”to healing after her surgery, chemo, andradiation.

Continued healing to June B. after hersurgery.

Health News“Say Cheese!” from Better Homes & Gardens by Juno DeNelo with photos by Andy Lyons

It sometimes get a badrap, but these varietieshave surprisinglyhealthy perks.

Blue: One possible reason the French havesuch low heart disease rates despite a high-fatdiet: blue cheese. Roquefort and other blues, including Stilton and Gorgonizola, havecompounds that might protect against heartdisease.

Swiss: Trying to cut back on sodium? Swiss has 53 mg per ounce, the least of any hardor semisoft cheese. Neufchâtel [similar tocream cheese but with about a third less fat] isalso a low-sodium choice.

Brie: Brie is actually made from goat milk, which can be easier for some people to digestand has just 90 calories per ounce.

Parmesan: Hard cheeses are higher incalcium. Parmesan delivers the most: 336 mg ina quarter-cup, about a third of your daily needs. And thanks to its strong flavor, a little goes along way.

Cheddar: Let us count the ways we lovecheddar: Research published in GeneralDentistry found that cheddar could help preventcavities by raising the pH level in your mouth. And if you’re lactose-intolerant, you might nothave to give up aged cheddar (and other agedcheeses) because they’re lower in lactose.

Service Learning Program Committee

Vern shared an experience that he hasexperienced with the Corral Drive ElementarySchool students & staff. In every way it hasbeen a Service Learning project that raised$1200 for the Eliminate Project. See thesubsequent article.

“Little Big Mac” Cookies As part of the Corral Elemen-tary School Family Fun Night, parent and children could make the“Little Big Mac” cookies OR

purchase pre-made cookies by the first gradestudents. The first graders learned about theEliminate Project. They set a goal of raisingenough money to save one mother ($1.80) andher children for the 484 children in the school.

Vern was invited to a presentation of thecheck for the Kiwanis Foundation from theCorral Drive PTA which represented theearnings of the first graders lead by Mrs.Schroeder. They met and greatly exceeded theirgoal! They made enough to save a mother forevery student .... every custodian ....the secretary.... every support person ....every bus driver....and every kindergartner expected NEXT year! That equaled $1,200. What an effort.

Board Meeting SummaryThe Treasurer’s Report

showed a balance of $6082.35 inthe Administrative account and abalance of $23,026.78 in the Youth

account. The Stearns Grant $7500 has beenspent and $2429.18 remains of the $5000 clubcommitment is still available for furtherpurchases. Lonnie said that he is only planning

one more purchase. Kathy volunteered tocomplete the grant “application” for next year.

Old Business

Lonnie & Kevin provided informationregarding a prospective move of our clubmeeting to Minerva’s. The informationprovided to Lonnie was different than theinformation provided by Karen earlier. Theyrequire 60-70% of those attending the meetingto purchase a meal or pay $60 for use of themeeting room. This is not feasible. Discussionof alternatives turned to the possibility of theFirst Interstate Bank Board room for our nextBoard meeting and possibility also for our clubmeetings. This will be pursued. Soups, sand-wiches, beverages, and when the Downtownclub met there, a free dessert was also provided.

Kevin said that the pancake breakfastwent OK. Not all ticket sales money hasn’tbeen turned in nor has the food bill and thefacility use bill has been received from theVFW. A decent number of volunteers werereceived. There was a problem getting theplacemats picked up and a 100+ ate on Sunday. Zach is going to check with Mark about settingup and printing the placemats next year. Therewere difficulties in having someone to askquestions. One of the grills was not cleaned tothe VFW’s quality, a spatula still had egg on it,and one syrup was spill we weren’t aware of. Vern informed the Manager that next year hewill be the last person to leave to make sureeverything is done properly to his knowledge. Vern suggested that we take photos when wearrive and when we leave. Tip jars wereforgotten. Darlene & Mike will be asked towrite up the project.

Brad will be circulating a signup a sheetfor Dinosaur Park cleanup on April 23 as partof the Citywide Cleanup. The Board approvedapproaching the Parks Department regardingagain weekly cleaning Dinosaur Park.

New Business

Our new member, Ken, has offered tomake new name badges for every member ofour club. He has done that for every club that hehas joined. The board discussed this offer. Wewould like to ask Ken if he would make a nice

plaque for giving to Payless Shoes to expressour appreciation for their assistance with theShoe Project. The motion was made by Kevinand seconded by Judy pending acceptance byPayless Shoes and Ken.

In addition to the slate of officers whichKevin presented at the club meeting, Mike B,expressed interested in one of the three-yearBoard of Director positions. [In a subsequentemail to the membership, Kevin said that ifanyone is interested in running for any of thepositions, they need to notify him by noon onApril 19th “in order to give the club the twoweek notice it needs per the bylaws” prior to theelection on May 3rd.]

Josh, Stephanie, and Connie have notbeen oriented per our member-ship plan. Adiscussion was held as to the best way toaccomplish this. It was decided to not orientthem, but it didn’t hurt to orient the entire clubbecause many of the members have never beenoriented. A motion was made by Kevin andseconded by Vern to do an orientation duringour business meeting this coming Tuesday,April 3rd.

The next Board of Directors meetingwill be held at 11:30 on Wednesday, April 20,2016 possibly at the First Interstate Bank BoardRoom.
