Ranong

Ranong is the first southern province on the western coast, located 568 kilometers from Bangkok. It is known for its long rainy season, which lasts for 8 months each year. A mountainous and heavily forested province. It was originally settled by the Hokkian Chinese, and their strong influence remains evident in the town. Ranong town is also a gateway to Myanmar, with colorful longboats ferrying produce and people across the narrow divide that separates the two countries. Ranong contains resource of tin and various natural attraction such as; hot springs, mangrove forest and peaceful island.

Ranong is administratively divided into 5 Amphoe: Amphoe Mueang Ranong, Amphoe Kapoe, Amphoe Kra Buri (with the Kra Isthmus which is the narrowest part of the Malay Peninsula with a length of 50 km.), Amphoe La-un, and Amphoe Suk Samran. By Car From Bangkok use highway 35 (Thon Buri-Pak Tho) Turn left at the Wang Manao T-junction and follow Highway 4 (Phetchakasem Road) through Phetchaburi province, Cha-am, Hua Hin, Prachuap Khiri Khan, Thap Sakae untill reach the intersection to Chumphon town (Pathomphon Intersection at Km. 499) turn right onto Highway 4, passing Amphoe Kra Buri and Amphoe La-un, total distance of 568 km.

Visitors can use a “Song Thaeo” service (Local Taxi Service) or motorcycle within the municipality area of Ranong by starting from the Ranong Market (Talat Sot Thetsaban Mueang) station during 06.00 a.m.-06.00 p.m. everyday on the following routes:

ATTRACTIONS Amphoe Mueang Ranong (อําเภอเมืองระนอง)

Rattana Rangsan Throne Hall (พระราชวังรัตนรังสรรค) is located at the Rattana Rangsan foothill, Tambon Khao Niwet. This throne hall was re-built in memory of royal visits by 3 kings; namely, King Rama V the Great (1890), King Rama VI (1909), and King Rama VII (1928). It is an essential tourist spot of Ranong province, It was built of teakwood and iron wood. On display inside the throne hall include royal chambers of King Rama V (3rd Fl.) and the Queen (2nd Fl.), totally 6 rooms: a pentagon building, an audience hall, a connection bridge between the royal office area and the pentagon building, royal accessories, and lanterns.

Governor’s Residence (บานคายเจาเมืองหรือจวนเจาเมืองระนอง) is located on Rueangrat road. The Ranong Governor’s Residence was constructed in the time of Phraya Damrong Sucharit Mahison Phakdi (Kho Su Chiang) after the Chinese Coolie Rebellion in 1877. This residence was declared a national ancient monument by the Fine Arts Department on 18 December, 1996. The fascinating part is the Na Ranong’s Family Ancestors’ Shrine. Besides that, there is also a stone which was engraved with King Rama V’s words. Wat Suwan Khiri or Wat Na Mueang (วัดสุวรรณคีรี-วัดหนาเมือง) is located on Chat Chaloem road, Tambon Khao Niwet. It contains a Burmese style pagoda with 10 metres in height, which was built by a Burmese. Visitors can spend time to see a beautiful standing Buddha image clad in a decorated robe enshrined in the main ordination hall.

Raksawarin Hot Springs and Public Park (บอน้ํารอนและสวนสาธารณะรักษะวาริน) is located on Chol Ra-u Road, Tambon Bangrin. In 1890, when King Rama V the Great visited Ranong, he named the road to the hot springs “Thanon Chon Ra-u”–literally “hot springs road”. There are 3 natural spring pools called, Bo Pho (the Father), Bo Mae (the Mother), and Bo Luk (the Child). The temperature of the water in the pools remains constant at about 65°C. The water is both suitable for bathing, and the pools are also recommended for medical treatment. This pool is one of the various sources of water that was used to make the holy water for the Celebrations on the Auspicious Occasion of His Majesty the King’s 5th Cycle Birthday Anniversary in 1987. Moreover, surrounding the hot springs is a deep shaded forest called “Raksawarin”, where rest pavilions and wash rooms have been provided for the visitor’s comfort. To get there: From Mueang Ranong Municipality take Highway no. 4005 (Chon Ra-u Road) around 1 km. the hot spring located on the right.

Wat Hat Som Paen (วัดหาดสมแปน) is located at Mu 3 Tambon Hat Som Paen. The interesting thing to visit is the plenty of “Pla Phluang” or Mahseer Barb; villagers believe that Pla Phluang is the venerated fish. Besides feeding the fish, visitors can also pay respect to the image of Luangpho Khlai who was much revered by southerners and passed away at this temple.

To get there: From Ranong Municipality take Highway no. 4005 (Chon Ra-u Road) around 9 km. The temple located on the left or 6 km. from Raksawarin Public Park.

Ranong Canyon (ระนองแคนยอน) is located near Ban Thung Kha, Tambon Hat Som Paen, Ranong Canyon is one of the most suitable places for relaxing. It is surrounded by fascinating mountains and white stones which have been used for making sanitary ware. Visitors can feel the sunlight in the morning and spend time feeding various kinds of fish.

To get there: Take Highway no. 4005 the same route as Raksawarin Hot Springs and 3 km. from Wat Hat Som Paen. Lamnam Kra Buri National Park (อุทยานแหงลําน้ํากระบุรี) is located at 130 Mu 3 Ban Hin Chang, Tambon Paknam, covering an area of 2,061,278 rai in Amphoe Mueang Ranong, Amphoe Kra Buri and Amphoe La-un of Ranong province. Encompassing a moist everygreen forest area with biodiversity of flora and fauna, it was proclaimed a national park on 21 April 1999 Accommodation, camping ground and welfare shops are available nearby the Park’s headquarters. To get there: Take Highway No. 4 (Phetchakasem Road) and turn right at Km. 595 for approximately 1 km. to the Park. It is 18 km. from Ranong. Place of Interest in the National Park Khao Hin Chang Viewpoint (จุดชมวิวเขาหินชาง) overlooks the Kra Buri River, islands, mangrove forests, and the Republic of the Union of Myanmar. The distance to the viewpoint is about 5 km. and it is accessible both on foot and by car. Visitors should contact the Pak ranger for guidance. Kra Buri River or Park Chan River (แมน้ํากระบุรีหรือแมน้ําปากจั่น) runs through the Park into the Andaman Sea and forms a natural border between Myanmar and Thailand. Cruising along the river is available to admire the scenery on both sides, which comprise mangrove forests, undulating mountains and 6 islands of intact mangrove forest in the middle of the river; namely, Ko Siat, Ko Khwang, Ko Yao, Ko Chon, Ko Pling, and Ko Nok Plao. Ko Yao and Ko Khwang, inparticular, are of

historical importance, as they used to be a stronghold of the Japanese army during World War II. A long tunnel was bored around the islands at that time to store armaments and serve as bunkers. Along the tunnel walls, there are small niches to hold lamps and candles and also sleeping spaces for soldiers. Visitors to Ko Yao and Ko Khwang are required to contact the Park ranger for guidance, as the entry into the tunnel may be obstructed by hide tide. A cruise for 10 people running for approximately 1 hour along the Kra Buri River is available at Tha Khrop and Tha Pho, which are piers located about 2 km. and 7 km. from the park headquarters, respectively. Namtok Punyaban (น้ําตกปุญญบาล) is located at Mu 1, Tambon Bang Non. Formerly known as Namtok Setkuat, this 20-metre high waterfall, visible on the right-hand side from the road. It is especially beautiful in the rainy season when a lot of water cascades down and splashes on the rocks below. There is a 300 m. nature trail with 2 more levels of the water along the routes; namely, Namtok Ton Mai Phai, the second level, and Namtok Ton Ton Foen, the third level. The ground level is suitable for recreation because there is a restaurants, souvenir shops and car park area provided for tourists.

To get there: From Mueang Ranong Municipality take Highway No. 4 (Phetchakasem Road) until reaching Km. 597. The waterfall is on the roadside on the right. There are directional signs along the route.

Phon Rang Hot Spring (บอน้ํารอนพรรั้ง) is located at Mu 3 Ban Phon Rang, Tambon Ngao. Hot Spring is under the supervision of the Namtok Ngao National Park surrounded by hills and some natural water sources. Water from this hot spring has been used for medical treatment for tourists. To get there: From Mueang Ranong Municipality take highway no. 4 around 12 km. and turn left another 2 km at Chaloemprakiet park.

Phukhao Ya (Grass Hill) or Khao Hua Lan (Bald Hill) (ภูเขาหญา หรือ เขาหัวลาน) is located in Tambon Ngao. This hill is something of an anomaly, as it is completely treeless, being covered instead by a thick blanket of grass. From November-April the grass were dry and brown, but from May-October were green.

To get there: From Mueang Ranong Municipality take highway no. 4 (the same route as Phon Rang Hot Spring) around 13 km. opposite site of Namtok Ngao National Park.

Namtok Ngao National Park (อุทยานแหงชาติน้ําตกหงาว) is located in Tambon La-un, Amphoe Mueang Ranong, Amphoe Sawi, Amphoe Thung Tako, Amphoe Lang Suan, and Amphoe Phato of Chumphon Province, Namtok Ngao National Park covers a total area of approximately 417,500 Rai. It was declared a national park on 3 June, 1999. The steep Ngao Waterfall can be seen from a great distance away because of its commanding height. The area is home to a unique endemic species of crab known as “Pu Chao Fa”. These crabs are easily recognised by their white bodies and dark purple mouths. To get there: From Mueang Ranong Municipality, take Highway No. 4 (Ranong-Ratchakrut), for a distance of approximately 13 km., then turn left for another 2 km.

Research and development of mangroves and coastal forests Ranong (ศูนยวิจัยและพัฒนาทรัพยากรปาชายเลนและชายฝงจังหวัดระนอง) is located at Mu 4, Tambon Ngao. This research centre is

located approximately 19 km. from Ranong’s city. It has been declared a World Biosphere Reserve Zone by UNESCO. Mangrove nature trail with sign along 850 metres is provided. Many species of marine life come to the mangrove to mate, incubate their eggs, and care for their young offspring until they are strong enough to face the perils of the open sea. Namtok Ton Phet (น้ําตกโตนเพชร) is located at Mu 4, Tambon Ratchakrut. This 11-tiered waterfall is surrounded by moist evergreen forest with Ranong’s highest Phota Chong Dong Mountains being the source of water; each tier of the falls cascades down boulders all year round. For visitors who want to visit, please contact the local villagers for guide directly.

To get there: From Mueang Ranong Municipality take hightway no. 4 (Ranong–Phang-nga route), turn left at Km. 641 for approximately 2 km., then take a walk for around 1.5 km.

Governor’s Cemetery (สุสานเจาเมืองระนอง) is located at Rakangthong hill, Tambon Bangnon. This Chinese cemetery of Phraya Rattanasetthi (Kho Su Chiang), Ranong’s first governor, is situated on a piece of land dedicated by King Rama V the Great. There are 3 tiers of stone platform with steps leading up to the grave with antique granite sculptures of Chinese noblemen, horses, goats, and lions on both sides.

To get there: 1 km. from Muang Ranong Municipality on Highway No. 4004 (Ranong-Pak Nam). Ranong Customs Pier and The King’s 80th Birthday Anniversary Lighthouse (ประภาคาร

เฉลิมพระเกียรติ ๘๐ พรรษา) is located at Mu 5 Ban Khao Nang Hong, Tambon Paknam. This lighthouse was build on the occasion of His Majesty the King Rama IX 80th Birthday Anniversary. It is part of port customs as eight-side shape, high 48.5 metres with nine floor. The top of lighthouse is 360 degree viewpoint of Andaman. Open during 09.00 a.m.-7.00 p.m.

Muko Ranong National Park (อุทยานแหงชาติหมูเกาะระนอง) is located at 192 Mu 4. Tambon Ngao, was formerly known as Muko Phayam National Park and renamed by the National Park, Wildlife and Plant Conservation Department on 23 February, 2010. It covers a coastal area, which in cludes everygreen forests, mangrove forests and beaches on Ko Bang Chak, Ko Yio, Ko Sai Dam etc, and an off-the-coast area, which includes Ko Chang, Ko Thalu, Ko Ta Khrut, Ko Mo, Ko Pring, Ko Rai, Ko Fai Mai etc. For information on renting a boat to these islands, please contact Muko Ranong National Park Tel. 0 7781 3828, 07781 3840-1.

To get there: From Ranong take highway no. 4 (Phetchakasem Road), the Ranong Takua Pa route, approximately 14 km. to reach Tambon Ngao and turn right onto the Ban Lang-Hua Thanon route for about 4 km. to the Park’s headquarters.

Place of interest in the National Park Hat Hin Ngam (หาดหินงาม) is a beach on Ko Fai Mai (เกาะไฟไหม), a small island covered with a

moist everygreen forest located off the coast in the same direction as Ko Chang. It features a beach of round pebbles in various colors that glisten beautifully in the sunlight when washed by the waves.

Hat Sai Dam (หาดทรายดํา) is a beach on Ko Sai Dam (เกาะทรายดํา), an island inhabited by a large century-old community earning a living from rubber plantation and fruit orchard. The island is scenic with forested and rocky topography, and features the outstanding Hat Sai Dam, which is a vast stretch of black sand beach formed by a deposit of rotten wood and mangrove leaves over a long period of time. There is also Leam Makham (แหลมมะขาม), a cape with an intact mangrove

ecosystem, offering a 4-km. nature trail. To the south of the island is located Ao Po (อาวปอ), a serene inlet eith a scenic view of the mangrove forest.

Hat Sai Daeng (หาดทรายแดง), a beach of brick red sand caused by a long-time deposit of decayed shells.

To get there: From Ranong, follow highway no. 4 (Phetchakasem Road) on the Ranong-Ban Tha Chang route for a distance of 14 km., continue on the Ban Tha Chang-Tha Ton Son route for 3 km. and rent a boat from the villagers to the island, which takes 35 minutes.

By bus: From Ranong Bus Terminal, Take the Ranong-Ban Tha Chang bus and connect to a local bus routeing Ban Tha Chang-Tha Ton Son.

Ko Thalu (เกาะทะลุ) features a pile of naturally-sculpted archways that form a stone bridge and beautiful corals around the island.

Ko Chang (เกาะชาง) is located on the south west, 20 km. from Mueang Ranong Municipality. The island covers an area of 18 sq. km. The local people make their living by fishing, growing cashew nuts and stink beans or Sato, and farming rubber plantations. Moreover, Ko Chang is also home of the small-sized Oriental Pied Hornbills called “Nok Kaek” in Thai, which fly between Ko Chang and nearby islands. Various activities are available on Koh Chang; such as, trekking to hilltop viewpoints, sightseeing biking, herbal steam at Wat Koh Chang, hornbill watching, enjoy pure nature and the relaxed traditional spirit of the southern Thai people at Ko Chang. To get there: Ko Chang can be reached within 1 hour by a long-tail boat at Paknam Municipality pier. There are boats leaving for Ko Chang 3 times a day at 09.30 a.m. / 12.30 p.m. / 02.00 pm., and on a return trip at 08.30 a.m. / 01.00 p.m. The long-tail boat fee starts at 200 Baht per person. Ko Phayam (เกาะพยาม) has a total area of approximately 35 sq. km. and 4 km. from Ko Chang. Local people make their living on fishing, growing cashew nuts, and farming rubber. Ko Phayam has lots of good activities for tourists; such as, fishing, snorkeling, cycling, etc. There are tidal mangrove forests with lots of wildlife, including the local sea gypsy tribe; also on this island there are several resorts offering accommodation for visitors. The best period for travelling during November-May.

To get there: Take a long-tail boat from Paknam Municipality Pier, take 2 hours, time starts at 09.30 a.m./ 02.00 p.m. The return time is 08.30 a.m./ 02.00 p.m./ 03.00 p.m. Transfer fee 200 Baht/person. Hat Chan Damri (หาดชาญดําริ) is located 9 km. from Mueang Ranong, along Highway No. 4004 (Ranong–Pak Nam). The small beach with the best good location for watching Ranong’s sunsets. The beach is also a pier where tourists can travel to other islands in Andaman Sea offshore Ranong Province. Such as Victoria Point or Ko Song in Myanmar

Victoria Point or Ko Song (วิคตอเรียพอยท หรือ เกาะสอง) is a small town in southern part of Myanmar, Victoria Point. It takes around 15 minutes by a long-tail boat. Ko Song offers visitors a variety of local products, souvenirs such as wicker basketry, lacquer ware and gems. At this point you must inform the immigration authorities. Amphoe Kra Buri Royal Initials Rocks (ศิลาสลักพระปรมาภิไธย) is located in Tambon Pak Chan, there is the Royal

Initials Rock of King Rama V the Great. His initials "Cho Po Ro” was inscribed on the rock during his royal visit to this place on 21 April, 1890, in an elephant and horse procession from Chumphon. On 7 March, 1959, King Rama IX and Queen Sirikit visited their subjects here and their royal initials "Pho Po Ro" and "So Ko" were carved on the rock as well.

Kho Khot Kra or Kra Isthmus (คอคอดกระ หรือ ก่ิวกระ) is located at Ban Thap Li, Tambon Mamu, at Km. 545 on Highway No. 4, 66 km. from town centre, the Kra Isthmus is the narrowest part of the Malay Peninsula, spanning merely 44 km. from the Gulf of Thailand on the east coast to the Andaman Sea on the west coast. There is a large concrete map to help orient visitors. The Kra Isthmus provides an excellent vantage point from which to see the Kra Buri River forming a natural border line between Thailand and Myanmar.

Tham Phra Khayang (ถํ้าพระขยางค) formerly known as Khao Yang, is located at Ban Lamliang. An old legend of “Phra Khayang” Cave links to the establishment of Kra Buri town. Deep inside the entrance for around 40 metres, there is a staircase leading upward to the top of the cave where some rare herbs are believed to have been planted. Visitors are recommended to take with them a candle or flashlight because of a large flock of bats inside. Besides that, every year during the Chinese New Year, a fair will be held for 3-7 days for people to pay respect to Buddha images inside the cave.

To get there: 18 km. from Kra Buri town with a left turn from Phetchakasem Road (Ranong-Chumphon) for another 1 km. at Km. 563-564.

Namtok Chum Saeng or Namtok Sai Rung (Chum Saeng Waterfall or Sai Rung Waterfall) (น้ําตกชุมแสง หรือน้ําตกสายรุง) is located in Ban Pak Chan, Tambon Pak Chan. Sai Rung means a rainbow, and the waterfall was named after its powerful mass of water that splashes against rocks and causes a rainbow to appear.

To get there: 80 km. from the city or 16 km. from Amphoe Kra Buri. It can be reached by travelling along Highway No. 4 and then turning left at Km. 529-530 for another 3 km.

Gong Valley (กองวัลเลย) is located at 62/1 Mu 8, Tambon Nam Chuet, a hand-roasted coffee and agrotourism community enterprise It features a mixed plantation of fruit trees, para rubber, and coffee. Visitors can try their hand at roasting, grinding, and boiling their own coffee or sipping mild and fragrant coffee flower tea. To get there: From Ranong, take highway no. 4 at Km.556-557, turn to the same direction as Namtok Bok Krai about 2 km.

Namtok Bok Krai (Bok Krai Waterfall) (น้ําตกบกกราย) is located at Km. 556-557 on Highway No. 4, 3 km. from Kra Buri. There is a direction sign telling visitors to head for another 13 km. and 200-metre walk is a must to get to the waterfall. Bok Krai Waterfall has many steps with fascinating natural surroundings. Khao Fa Chi (เขาฝาชี) is located in Tambon Bang Kaeo, it was named “Fa Chi" because of its resemblance to a traditional Thai food cover. On the top of the hill, visitors can see the fascinating scenery and sunsets, where Kra Buri and La-un Rivers meet.

To get there: 30 km. from Mueang Ranong Municipality. Take hightway no. 4 until Km. 580 and turn left around 3 km.

Locomotive Graveyard (สุสานรถไฟโบราณ) is on the roadside of highway no. 4 near the bridge across the La-un River, approximately 30 km. form Ranong. The railway used to be part of the Kra Isthmus-Khao Fa Chi route used by the Japanese troops to transport armaments during WWII. Traces of war left from that period include the Andaman railway line, tunnel and bunkers, and headquarters of Japanese troops. To get there: From Ranong Municipality, follow highway no.4 bound for Chumpon. Approximately 30 km. after crossing the bridge over Khlong La-un, near Km. 583, a directional sign to the Locomotive Graveyard will be visible on the right

Japanese Troops’ Tunnel (อุโมงคหลบภัยทหารญ่ีปุน) is located about 1 km. from the Locomotive Graveyard, next to the Bang Kaeo Provincial Police Station. It was dug some 20 m. long and 1 m. wide into the hill.

Tham Nam Lot (ถ้ําน้ําลอด) is a 2-floored complicated cave located at Mu 3, Tambon Nai Wong Tai. The upper floor features scenic stalamites and stalactites, and visitor can walk through to the other side of the cave where there is a cliff overlooking beautiful nature. Hat Yai Hot Spring (บอน้ําพุรอนหาดยาย) is at Mu 2, Tambon Bang Phra Nuea, within the area of the Lamnam Kra Buri National Park. With temperatures ranging between 39-59 degree Celsius, there are 4 pools of the hot spring, which include 2 concrete wells, a 3-m. long weir, and a pool surrounded with an earthen mound, as well as a hole of hot spring drilling. A mineral bath and soaking service is provided. A natue trial around the area is also available. To get there: From Amphoe La-un, take the Hat Yai-Bo Nam Ron (Hot Spring) route until reaching the Ban Bang Khun Phaeng Intersection and continue for some 6 km. to the hot spring. Laem Son National Park (อุทยานแหงชาติแหลมสน) was declared a national park on 9 August, 1983. It covers a total area of 315 sq. km. or 196,875 rai, comprising coastal districts from Tambon Ratchakrut, Amphoe Mueang Ranong, southward via Tambon Muang Kluang, Tambon Kapoe, Tambon Bang Hin, Tambon Nakha, Tambon Kamphuan, Amphoe Kapoe, Ranong province, to Tambon Khura, Amphoe Khura Buri, Phang-nga province. It also covers islands in the Andaman Sea; such as, Ko Khang Khao and Mu Ko Kam.

The National Park has two climates: rainy season during May-November and summer during December-April. There are interest in this National Park; such as,

Hat Bang Ben (หาดบางเบน) A long and vast sandy beach, shaded by pine trees along the beach, it is where the National Park headquarters is located. Visitors will enjoy the scenic view of islands from here.

Hat Laem Son (หาดแหลมสน) Only 4 km. next to Hat Bang Ben, a clean white sandy beach provides home for various kinds or birds. This place is best for bird-watching and camping.

Ko Khangkhao (เกาะคางคาว) A fine sandy beach island with Hat Hin Ngam (a gravel beach) in the north. It takes about 40 minutes to Bang Ben Beach by boat.

Ko Kam Tok or Ao Khao Khwai (เกาะกําตก หรือ อาวเขาควาย) has a curve-shaped inlet; tourists can see the bay that curves to nearly make a circle. A national park’s ranger unit is located here to facilitate tourists. Travelling to Ko Kam Tok from Ko Khangkhao takes approximately 20 minutes by boat. To get there: From Ranong Municipality take Highway No. 4 (Ranong-Phang-nga) around 45 km. or 6 km. from Amphoe Kapoe, at Km. 657 with a right turn for another 10 km.

Hat Praphat or Hat Hin Thung (หาดประพาส หรือ หาดหินทุง) is located at Mu 2 Tambon Kamphuan, approximately 90 km. from Ranong on Highway No. 4 (Ranong-Phang-nga), or 30 km. from Amphoe Kapoe with a right turn at Km. 702 into a dirt road for another 3 km. to the National Park’s Ranger Unit. Hat Praphat is a large beach shaded by pine trees similar to Hat Bang Ben. Namtok La-ong Dao (น้ําตกละอองดาว) is located in Tambon Ban Na in part of the Khlong Nakha Wildlife Sanctuary. Surrounded by a verdant moist evergreen forest, it is renowned as a scenic waterfall of Ranong province, with a cascade of water splashing down a rocky cliff interspersed with green shrubs. The route to the waterfall is rather difficult. Visitors will have to wade through the stream and climb up a steep mountain, so they have to be strong and healthy. They also have to be well-prepared with trekking and camping gear like well-fitting clothes for water wading and mountain climbing, leech proof socks, hammock, flysheet, raincoat, water bottle, waterproof bag or backpack, etc. The trip may take 2 days and 1 night or 3 days and 2 nights, and trekkers are required to contact the Khlong Nakha Wildlife Sanctuary Tel. 0 7787 4210 to seek permission for guidance. Khlong Nakha Wildlife Sanctuary (เขตรักษาพันธุสัตวปาคลองนาคา) is located about 25 km. from the district township at Km. 685-686 on Highway No. 4. Wildlife of different types and species are scattered all around this evergreen tropical forest, together with a beautiful waterfall “Namtok Nueng Phan Met” (1,000-metre Waterfall), making the sanctuary even more attractive for nature-loving visitors.

Ban Thale Nok (บานทะเลนอก) is located in Tambon Kamphuan, has the area approximately 44 sq. km., the livelihood of this Muslim community depends on natural resources in the mangrove area and on the self sufficiency basis. This Muslim community once received the Award of Outstanding Performance in the category of Ecotourism Attraction in the Thailand Tourism Awards 2008. Buddha Image Boat Procession and Races (งานเสด็จพระแขงเรือ อําเภอกระบุรี) Held cooperatively by Thai and Burmese people during the 1st–3rd days of the waning moon of the 11th lunar month, the event features a Buddha image boat competition. Boats will be decorated to carry Buddha images and float in a procession along the Kra Buri River, near the Kra Isthmus, passing by riverside communities.
