Providence

In a recent conversation with a Darby Original he men-tioned the word ldquoProvidencerdquo As so many generations of Rangers wonder feel the pain and guilt of survival where Brothers were lost why theyyou survived he found and does to this day comfort solace in this word

1 The foreseeing care and guidance of God or nature over the creatures of the earth

2 God especially when conceived as omnisciently direct-ing the universe and the affairs of humankind with wise be-nevolence

3 A manifestation of divine care or direction

On or about Dawn 25 October 1983 Sergeant Sean Kelly as a Squad Leader assigned to C Company 1st Ranger Battalion led his Airborne Rangers from C-130 Aircraft over the enemy secured runway at Point Salines island nation of Grenada during Operation Urgent Fury The Cuban enemy forces engaged USAF jump aircraft with anti-aircraft fire from ZPU-4 AA machine guns sev-eral medium caliber machine guns and an untold number of light caliber machine guns The actual ground level of the parachute jump was a mere 500 ft which would not have enabled the activation of a reserve parachute if re-quired The short descent under canopy was while being engaged by enemy forces and upon landing onto their assigned sector of the Drop Zone Sergeant Kelly rapidly led his Airborne Ranger Squad against Opposing Defend-ers of the airfield and immediately seized and secured his initial objective Follow on operations after the airfield sei-zures were numerous and the end result was the return of the island nation of Grenada to its newly elected Democ-ratic Government The island nation of Grenada has con-tinued a peaceful co-existence within the southern Carib-bean chain of islands and has not allowed itself to be a forward operating base for enemy nations who are or were opposed to the United States or its national inter-ests

Ranger Base ldquoBOrdquo Baker By Ernie Estrada Commander

Ranger Base AJ ldquoBordquo Baker is up and run-ning After some unfortunate events that took place with the ldquoBordquo Baker Base in Oregon I was asked by the then USARA President Linc German if I could salvage the memory of this legendary Ranger With great guid-ance from Ranger German I stepped up to the task and took the initiative in good olrsquo Ranger fashion to take charge of the Ranger Base By approval by the USARA Board of Directors I became Commander of the Baker Base with orders to revitalize relocate re-group and recruit

I immediately picked an experienced and hard working Ranger to be my XO Ricky Bonnell I am honored to say that the ldquoBordquo Baker Base out of Olympia Washington had its first meeting on 11 Dec 2010 We dis-cussed what we wanted to do as a base which included helping Rangers as well as socializing on a regular basis A quick sum-mary of the meeting follows

We are planning a ldquoBordquo Baker Beast Feast on 24 Jul 2011 and plan to get Rangers from nearby 275

th to attend free of charge We

will also be marching in the traditional Vet-eranrsquos Day Parade in Auburn Washington as well as participating in a Massing of Colors

All members present volunteered to help Rangers when situations arose where we could We topped off the meeting with a tradi-tional passing of the guidon from USARA VP (Log) Craig Vanek to the new Commander of the ldquoBordquo Baker Ranger Basehellipme

We are in the process of setting up a meeting with the leadership of 2

nd Battalion to establish a relationship

where the ldquoBordquo Baker Base can assist where needed and attend functions as schedules permit

As of this writing we have been able to recruit 23 mem-bers which is more than half of the USARA members in Washington We held our second Ranger Base meeting on 19 Mar 2011 where we again confirmed our vision for the future

I have been in close contact with our new USARA President Butch Nery He is carrying on the tradition of past Presidents by giving me superb support As you can see Ranger Base ldquoBordquo Baker is stepping up and moving out I would like to extend an invitation to other Rangers in the Washington area to join USARA and the Baker Ranger Base I heartily challenge other USARA regions and areas within those regions to start Ranger Bases

USARA Airborne Man of Year 2011

1SG (r) Sean Kelly

First Sergeant (Retired) Sean Kelly served in the US Army for twenty years beginning in 1979 until his retirement in 1999 While on active duty service First Sergeant Kelly served almost exclusively in Airborne Ranger Units

He has several hundred parachute jumps of which the vast majority of them are Night Combat Equipment Mass Tactical

First Sergeant Kelly has two Combat Parachute Jumps as a result of service with the 75th Ranger Regiment during his career

At 0100 hrs Platoon Sergeant Kelly while assigned as a Platoon Sergeant to A Company 3rd Ranger Battalion once again led his Airborne Rangers against an enemy held military base and runway This time the objective was the Rio Hato Military Base near the Village of Rio Hato Republic of Panama during Operation Just Cause This was a Night Combat Equipment Mass Tactical Combat Parachute Jump which was again directly into enemy fire from ZPU-4 Anti-Aircraft Machine Guns as well as medium machine guns of 50 caliber size and numerous light caliber machine guns held by enemy soldiers of the Noriega led Panamanian Defense Force (PDF) Once again the Actual Ground Altitude for this parachute jump was 500 feet Platoon Sergeant Kelly and his subordinate

USARA Member Survey

Coming soonhellip

Over the years we have speculated as to what members think or want but really have had no way of knowing To resolved that we have purchased use of a professional sur-vey application and are currently preparing a member sur-vey

Very soon all members will be sent an invitation to partici-pate in our survey which will ask specific and direct ques-tions about USARA our direction and our future For the first time you will have the opportunity to tell us how you feel what we need to do differently

There will be multiple questions with answer selections we will collect some demographic pieces of information we have not been able in the past there will be ldquorankingrdquo type questions and a couple of fill-in where you can contribute your ideas

The goal is to have 100 participation After the survey is complete we will compile reports and graphs for all to see And The President and Board of Directors will use the re-sults to make changes with our association where needed and to shape our future

You will be notified by email when the survey is ready and be provided with a link to the survey The application allows a member to complete the survey only once All answers are confidential no one knows who answered ldquowhatrdquo or ldquohowrdquo We only know if you completed a survey or opted-out (did not want to take the survey)

We hope you all take advantage of the opportunity to be counted

First Sergeant Kelly has also served with the Ranger Training Brigade as a Ranger Instructor and Company First Sergeant for several years at the 4th Ranger Training Battalion Ft Benning Georgia He also served a tour of duty in Germany and another in Korea

First Sergeant (Retired) Sean Kelley amongst his many other awards and decorations possesses the United States Army Master Parachutist Badge with Two Gold Combat Jump Stars

Since his retirement from the United States Army in 1999 he has returned to his home town of Phoenixville Penn-sylvania with his wife Lisa Kelly (former Lisa Long) and their four children being Patrick Darby Kelly Michael Rudder Kelly Ashley Merrill Kelly and Rachel Morgan Kelly (Thatrsquos right the middle name of each child is named after a famous American Ranger)

First Sergeant Sean Kelly epitomizes the Ranger Creed and the Warrior Spirit He truly is a deserving recipient to receive the coveted Airborne Man of the Year Award and is the designated Representative from the United States Army Ranger Association

He has several hundred parachute jumps of which the vast majority of them are Night Combat Equipment Mass Tactical

I have been in close contact with our new USARA President Butch Nery He is carrying on the tradition of past Presidents by giving me superb support As you can see Ranger Base ldquoBordquo Baker is stepping up and moving out I would like to extend an invitation to other Rangers in the Washington area to join USARA and the Baker Ranger Base I heartily challenge other USARA regions and areas within those regions to start Ranger Bases

th to attend free of charge We

will also be marching in the traditional Vet-eranrsquos Day Parade in Auburn Washington as well as participating in a Massing of Colors
