RANGER 4 MAINTENANCE AND TROUBLESHOOTING GUIDE
Overview This specification details the steps needed to troubleshoot and/or maintain the Ranger 4 either locally
on the Ranger or through XMM.
Administrator Access Locating the Status Bar The status bar is where the administration window is located, and it can be accessed by tapping the
bottom of the Ranger screen or by pressing F5 to bring up the keyboard and clicking the “win” key.
Administrator Window and Password Once the status bar pops up go to “Start” and choose “Administrator”. A login window will pop up along
with a keyboard. Enter the password, 636867, in the login window. A window will pop up with admin
applications such as “Software Reset” and “Windows Explorer”.
6
Programming Ranger 4 Using USB A Ranger 4 can be programmed using a USB stick. Locate the USB sticks provided by Trapeze Software
containing the latest Ranger software image.
Follow the steps above to access the Administration window, and go to “Device Clean Up”. Check all
available boxes and press “Clean Up”. Once the device resets, plug in the USB stick into USB port on the
back of the Ranger.
When the USB stick is inserted into the back of the Ranger, it may ask you to confirm if you want to
reprogram or not, select “Yes”.
7
The Ranger will go through various resets. The update typically takes 5 - 10 minutes to program. After
accepting the final safety message a window will appear indicating if the install was successful or not.
Accept the message and remember to remove the USB stick.
Diagnostics Running Diagnostics and Checking Logs on the Ranger Diagnostics can also be run through the administration window by clicking on “Diagnostic Tools”. This
window shows diagnostic logs from the Ranger. These logs are updated constantly and can be saved
and downloaded to the Flash Drive or external storage. The icon for the floppy drive is used to save the
log, and the pause button is used to stop updating logs to be able to isolate an error. Note to save a log
to a USB, insert the USB into the Ranger and save the log file to \Hard Disk.
The filter option allows us to change the dates of the logs and looks for special texts in the logs.
The events tab allows you to quickly view when the last major event such as a software reset occurred.
8
Resetting the Ranger Soft Reset If the Ranger freezes it can be reset using the Function keys on the side of the Ranger. Hold the Power,
F2, and F5 keys together, until all the Function keys flash blue, this will perform a soft reset on the
Ranger. You can also log into the Administrator window and choose “Software Reset” to reset the
Ranger.
Hard Reset A hard reset is usually the very last option which should be considered. To perform a hard reset, pull the
power cable from the Ranger.
Troubleshooting Ranger Connection to Dispatch Broken If the Ranger cannot be seen within XMM or does not seem to be able to use maps, receive trips, or
send and receive messages the Ranger may have lost connection to the network. You can see this on
the top line of the Ranger, if the connection was broken it would state “Connection to Dispatch Center
Broken” and if the connection is intact the top will read “Online”.
9
Velos Adapter Icon A possible reason for the Ranger’s loss of connection to XMM or the network could be the VelosEVDO
(cellular) adapter. You can check the status of the adapter in the status bar. If you do not know where
the status bar is please see the above section on accessing the status bar.
On the right hand side of the status bar there will be a symbol similar to an upside down “T”, as shown
below. Double tapping this icon will display the information from the adapter. Please check to see in
the pop up window that the adapter has an IP address. If it does not then this could be the point of
failure, and could mean that either the network is not in coverage or the adapter is configured
incorrectly.
Verifying GPS GPS receivers are built into the Ranger. In order verify GPS is being received by the Ranger, open
“Diagnostic Tools” and select “System Status”. The Interfaces tab will indicate if the Ranger has a GPS
lock. Note when verifying GPS, ensure the vehicle is outside and that the Ranger has a clear line of sight
with the sky (in order to ensure satellite reception).
10
Verifying Ignition After the Ranger has been installed “Diagnostic Tools” can be used to help verify the install. Select
“System Status” followed by “Vehicle”, the Ignition option should switch between On and Off when the
vehicle is powered on / off.
Ranger’s Not Powering On Typically Rangers are wired to power on with vehicle ignition and power off 30 minutes after the vehicle
has been turned off. If the Ranger does not power on
1) Perform a Re-boot of the unit thru the Function keys, watch for Blue LED’s to properly light
up.
2) Check all fuses and Power connections; perform a Power cycle by removing the Fuses and
re-installing.
3) Locate and check for the following at the white 4 wire molex connector.
A) Red = Constant 12 volts (3 amp fuse)
B) Green = Switched Key 12 Volts (2 amp fuse)
C) Black = Good Ground
11
Recalibrating the Touch Screen The Ranger on occasion may need its touch screen recalibrated. To do this, open the Administration
window and select Control Panel. From the Control Panel open Stylus select the Calibration tab, and
click on the Recalibrate button. Cross hairs will appear on the screen, touch on each of the cross hairs,
and tap anywhere on the screen when completed to close the calibration screen. Note if the screen
calibration is too far off and the touch screen becomes unusable, you can use a USB mouse or keyboard
to open the screen calibration window.
Safety Message Acknowledgement For safety reasons there is a message during Ranger initialization stating that the driver will use
precaution and not use the Ranger while driving. If the driver does not acknowledge this message for 30
minutes or declines it, the Ranger will go back to sleep even if the ignition is on. It can be rebooted by
holding the power button.
Adding Units to XGate and XGate features Windows in XGate XGate has six different windows inside it. They are from left to right as follows:
1. Unit summary - This shows all the configured units along with the mobility app, time, and
channel.
2. Broadcast summary - generally not used as it is for private radio networks.
3. Event summary - Shows all the messages being sent to and from units, if unit is not registered it
will state “message from un-configured units”.
4. Host summary - Shows the hosts, their status, and time.
12
5. Channel summary - Shows the channels and their status with the IP number and Port in the
format IP/Port number.
6. System information - Shows the version of XGate, the database (usually local), CPU information
such as IP address, and the date XGate was started on last.
Adding a New Ranger to XGate To add a new Ranger, right click in the unit summary box and select either “add” or “copy”. If you are
going to “add” a new unit, you must know which mobility application you are using, where the .capp file
is located, the channel you are connecting to, and the EID of the Ranger. The channel will be similar to
“UDP_092”, the EID can be found on the Ranger by pressing the F1 key.
Click on the Accept button to add the unit to XGate. If the new unit uses the same software (Mobile
App) you can select “Copy” and enter the new unit name and EID. Click Accept to add the unit to XGate.
13
XMM Unit Configuration and Diagnostics Renaming a Unit in XMM Once XMM is installed and running, you may change the name of the unit by right clicking on the
preferred unit and selecting “rename”. Enter the new name and press enter.
Diagnostics in XMM To proceed to diagnostics of the preferred unit, right click on the unit and select “Diagnostics” or select
the unit and choose “Diagnostics” from the top options bar. Once the diagnostics window opens you
can see the following tabs:
Device status - shows state information, memory information, etc
Software history - the previous communications with the Ranger through XMM.
Process viewer - which applications are currently running on the Ranger.
Screen capture - shows the current screen of the Ranger and allows for a screenshot.
Log viewer - shows the logs from the Ranger, also allows for the downloading of logs.
Debugging - enable or disable logging on selective ports.
File browser - allows for browsing of files on the Rangers storage devices.
Registry - allows for viewing and editing of the registry files.
Snapshot - downloads the current device status, screen capture, process list, and diagnostic
logs.
