Year 10 Work Experience
Next week, Year 10 will commence a fortnight of work experience.
Year 10 students have organised work experience placements in a
wide variety of employment fields. While they may not finally work
in the field in which they are undertaking work experience, the
program offers benefits to all participants. These include:
understanding the requirements of
the working day, working in an
adult environment, meeting
deadlines and most importantly,
the value of education in giving
each individual the best chance of
maximising employment
opportunities.
One great benefit for those
students seeking employment in
trades-related industries is the opportunity to achieve a “White
Card”. This is an industry requirement and the school arranges
training for students. This year training occurred on November 14.
Accolades for White Card students
I was delighted to receive an email from the coordinator of the
training for White Cards, full of praise for the conduct and
commitment of the students who participated in the program. His
email read:
“I must commend the students that attended the white card training course on the 14th November 2013. The students Matthew Predl, Alfred Grech, Brandon El-Saneh, Harrison Underwood, Mitchell Shelton and Phaeton Dellow were great ambassadors for Randwick Boys’ High School.
At the training course, their level of input to the course was exemplary and their contribution to the day was outstanding.
All the other participants, all very experienced construction workers, commented on how impressed they were with the students’ involvement in the training course.
Again congratulations to all the students for achieving such high standards in the course.”
These young men can be well pleased. They have brought credit to
themselves, their families and their school.
Year 4 and Year 6 visits
Each year, the school hosts visits by Year 4 students to provide
them with a taste of high school life. Mr Thornton, Head Teacher,
History, coordinates the program and works with a number of
teachers who volunteer their time to provide showcase lessons for
the Year 4 visits.
This is a valuable opportunity to show our school to the wider
community and I am very appreciative of the efforts of Mr Thornton
and the teachers who support this program so ably.
Year 6 students joining Randwick Boys’ High School will have an
Orientation Day program on December 4. The program is for the
morning and is an opportunity for them to meet their class mates for
2014 and to get to know the school. Ms Edwards, Year 7 Adviser
for 2014 is organising the day.

For parents, there is an evening in the library. Details of this
evening have been sent to parents of Year 6 students.
Representatives from the staff, P&C and SRC are on hand to speak
to the parents about the school. It is always a lively and interesting
discussion.
White Ribbon Day
For several years, Randwick Boys’ High School has
been an active participant in White Ribbon Day.
Welfare coordinator, Ms Pappin and Year 11
Adviser, Ms da Costa, have worked enthusiastically
to build this program.
Once more in 2013, we will be working with Year 7 boys and senior
students from Randwick Girls’ High School to help educate our
young men in the importance of respectful relationships. Along with
this, our primary school neighbours, Rainbow Street Public School,
will also participate in a program to promote respectful relationships
among these young people.
Programs like White Ribbon Day do not aim to be “the answer” to
the problems that confront us, but they do help, along the way, to
raise awareness, to show what is expected and to help students to
find a pathway in our increasingly challenging society.
Living History
Friday, November 22, marks the fiftieth anniversary of the
assassination of President John F
Kennedy. Few historical events have
had such lasting significance in the
consciousness of civilisation and
possibly the only recent parallel is the
death of Princess Diana in 1997.
To mark the occasion, Mr Thornton,
Head Teacher, History and the History
Faculty are undertaking a project with gifted and talented students
of history that will look at the ways in which source material can be
interpreted using the scenario of undiscovered luggage belonging
to the Kennedys.
It is an opportunity to engage and enthuse students with the study
of living history and will give students, whose parents, in all
likelihood, were not born at the time of the assassination, an
opportunity to understand this important day.

Thank you, Peer Tutors
On Friday, November 15, Year 10 and
11 Peer Tutors attended Randwick
TAFE for a well-earned thank you BBQ.
Along with their counterparts from
RGHS they enjoyed their lunch and the
following debriefing session.
These marvellous young people have spent this year tutoring junior
students in Literacy and Numeracy since their
induction at Randwick TAFE early in Term 1.
They have met with their TAFE
teachers on some Tuesday
afternoons, after school, for extra instruction and
personal reflection. They have been guiding their
tutees in DEAR time, four mornings weekly, and
have more than earned their TAFE certificates in
Volunteer Peer Tutoring.
This program has been running at our school since 2000, and its
longevity is a testament to the dedication and guidance of the TAFE
teachers, Pauline Norfolk (Literacy) and Helen Daly (Numeracy).
The roll call teachers involved are Mr Hatton, Mr Liceralde and
Ms Yang. These teachers monitor and advise tutors and tutees
daily, ensuring that the work set is completed. Without this team of
supervisors the program would not proceed so smoothly.
We also must thank the TAFE administration for making this
program available to us. There are many boys, past and present,
whose successes have been underpinned by this generous
program.
These young tutors are to be congratulated and admired for their
generosity, patience, diligence and perseverance. They are truly
the embodiment of the spirit of the Australian volunteer.

Randwick Boys’ High School Annual White Ribbon Day Event
White Ribbon Australia is a non-profit organisation and Australia's only national, male-led primary prevention campaign to end men’s violence against women.
Through primary prevention initiatives and an annual campaign, White Ribbon Australia seeks to change the attitudes and behaviours that lead to and perpetuate men’s violence against women, by engaging boys and men to lead social change.
The Prefects and SRC are busy preparing for our White Ribbon Day Event. Each year, Randwick Boys’ High School invites Randwick Girls’ High School to participate in a forum with our Year 7 students to raise awareness about respectful relationships. We also invite Year 6 students from Rainbow Street Public School for an afternoon of White Ribbon Day activities.
We will be raising awareness and funds for White Ribbon Australia on 25th November.

Randwick Boys’ Mufti Day Raising Money for the Bush Fire Victims Thursday 28th November
With the rain we have been experiencing in the past few days it is
hard to believe that only weeks ago, bushfires of terrifying
proportions were raging all throughout rural NSW. Many hectares of
land as well as thousands of homes, family pets and personal
belongings were lost as a result of these fires. On Thursday next
week, the 28th of
November, the SRC
in conjunction with
the school will be
running a Mufti Day
for all students. This
means that with a
gold coin donation on
that day you will not
be required to wear
uniform. While so
much damage has
been done, a small donation of a gold coin can go a long way to
helping those affected by the fires.

Randwick Boys’ Students Selected for the NSW State Beach Volleyball Team!
As Year 10 Adviser, I am extremely proud to announce that
Dion Thompson and Lynus Wong have been selected to represent
NSW for the State Beach Volleyball Team. The boys will travel to
Adelaide in January to represent the State. This is a fantastic
opportunity for Dion and Lynus and I would like to offer my
congratulations.
To support Dion and Lynus, we are fundraising by selling chocolate
boxes to help the boys with the costs involved in joining the State
Team. Mr Duncombe has generously offered a school contribution `
to the trip as well.
Congratulations Dion and Lynus!
