  • He's been working in the trade since he was 17 years old, and now, 40 years later, he's still at it, with a customer-first approach, a trusting client base, and unbeatable experience.

His motto for running a coin and precious metal company: "It's all about taking care of people and giving them a fair price," he says.

His approach is to make sure the customer's happy and getting a good price, and he's happy to do the work for that he'll gladly make apprais-als and offers, and do home visits to help families with precious heirlooms figure out what their coin collections are worth.

With his expertise and his wide network of connections, Westerling can offer pricing that's competitive with any coin dealer in the country, big or small.

It's that expertise that has helped him gain the trust of innumerable re-peat clients, who swear by him.

Westerling learned the rare coin trade from his Uncle Truman Truman took him under his wing and got him interested in rare and unusual coins when he was still in high school. Years later, that passion remains he rel-ishes in the history behind old coins.

"If the coin could talk, what stories would it tell?" he ponders.

He's been lucky enough to see every variety of rare coin come through the shop, including "trial coins" the first imprints of new coin patterns, which

were often given to elected officials and dignitaries.

He recalls one coin that came through the shop it was an extremely rare 1921 $20 St. Gauden's gold piece. A family had brought it in hoping to get a sound appraisal, which he gave them. In fact, his quote ended up being a better offer than the family got when they sold the piece at auction, by a margin of $15,000!

Have a coin with family lore but few specifics behind it? Stop at the Tru-man Company's Roseville office, where walk-ins are more than welcome. Having grown up working in his uncle's coin shop in California, seeing peo-ple walk through the doors "reminds me of the old coin shop days," he says.

The Truman Company is a trusted source for coin dealing

For Roger Westerling, owner of the Truman Company, rare coins are a life-long passion, and a daily inspiration.

Back in the day when towns were not very large, county fairs emerged. It was a time, after a long season of hard work, for the towns to gather and celebrate with their neighbors. Over time, county fairs have evolved with the

changing times, adapting to the changing commu-nities. The Ramsey County Fair celebrating its 102nd year has had its changes, but also real-izes the value of traditions and has striven to keep as many traditions as possible for families to pass along to future generations. While many county fairs have had to start

charging a fee for admission, Ramsey County remains one of the few FREE admission fairs, charging only a $3 parking fee (if you should park in the lot). The Ramsey County Fair has also striven to keep affordable food vendors and amusement rides, so famlies and friends can enjoy an affordable day out. There is something for everyone at the fair!

Music, entertainment, food, rides, 4H displays, exhibits of food, art and crafts. And there is the

chance for everyone to participate in the fair! Maybe you have a family recipe that you love to make, or a work of art, whether its something you have sewn, quilted, knitted or painted. You never know, you just may win that prestigious County Fair Blue Ribbon! Do you have a special talent? Enter into the Amateur Talent contest. Winners get to move onto the State Fair competi-tion. Or maybe you would just enjoy sitting back and listening to some good music in the shade, with a cup of lemonade in one hand and cotton candy in the other.Kids ever wanted to know what its like to be

a farmer? Check out the Farmer for A Day exhibit or check out the big tent on Saturday to enjoy activities presented by the folks from Gibbs Farm Museum of Pioneer and Dakotah Life. Of course, you cant beat the fun at our carnival and midway! For more information on any events, contest or

schedules visit the Ramsey County Fair website at www.ramseycountyfair.org and well see you at the fair!

102nd annual Ramsey County Fair a longstanding tradition

The petting zoo and so many other events help reintro-duce fairgoers to a centuries-old way of life. The Ramsey County Fair itself is more than a century old!

Every family has its own traditions traditions for celebrating the holidays, birthdays and special events. County fairs have been a longstanding tradition in the community.

White Bear Avenue Parade continues tradition

Theis is technically on the job as the parade organizer until the moment a police officer gives the signal for the parade to officially begin. Then, Theis can breathe a sign of relief as she sees everything come together for the White Bear Avenue Parade. The parade begins at 7 p.m. on July

15 and is considered the official kick-off event for the Ramsey County Fair. As its name implies, the parade pro-ceeds on White Bear Avenue, starting at Ivy Street and heading north to end at Aldrich Arena.Anywhere from 100 to 120 entrants

are expected to march. Among the entrants, local businesses will be emphasized, but the parade is also a must-attend draw for high-school

marching bands, area royal courts and a variety of civic clubs and entertain-ment units.Theis, the community organizer for

the parade, says that there will prob-ably not be a grand marshal this year, since the person who was suggested for the title could not attend the parade. However, appreciating the commu-

nity itself has always been the parade's main focus. Theis believes that people often

overlook how many good things are happening here [in this part of St. Paul], and that the parade celebrates those good things. The parade is also one of the last

parades of its kind in this area. There were once many more parades that

strode through the streets of St. Paul, but they were cancelled when they could no longer be funded. As for the White Bear Avenue

Parade, i ts populari tyroughly 12,000 spectators attend every year

and its significance to the community both testify that it will remain a part of tradition for a long, long time. For more information, visit www.

    wbaba.com/parade.htm.

After many hours of meeting deadlines, fi ling entrant applications, planning the marching order, and securing fi nances, Lisa Theis will do what shes done for many years: stand alongside White Bear Avenue on a summers evening in July with a sense of accomplishment unique to her among the thousands of other spectators.
