Introduction
In 2004, 6 data releases per year were agreed upon for the Radio Audience Measurement Survey. In addition, 2004 heralded the implementation of household “flooding” in large urban areas to expand the RAMS sample size. “Flooding” requires that in addition to placing a diary with the originally sampled respondent in a household, supplementary diaries are also placed and completed by all other adults in the household. From 2004 to 2008, this applied only to the metro, city and large town portion of the sample and diaries were placed with adults aged 16 years and older.
In 2009, two major changes were implemented:
Diary flooding was expanded to include small towns, villages and rural areas.*
The RAMS universe was changed to all adult males and females in the household aged 15 years and older. *
In 2015, there will be 4 RAMS releases. A trended Radio Station Summary will be available electronically for all Commercial/PBS and Community Stations.
Definition of Terms
Community Size
On the database, each respondent is allocated to one of the following 4 groups, according to the size of the community in which he/she lives.
Metropolitan areas 250 000 or more These two groups
combined are also referred to as Large Urban
Cities and Large towns 40 000 - 249 999
Small towns and Villages 500 - 39 999 - Also referred to as Small Urban
Settlements (Less than 500) + Non-urban
- Also referred to as Rural
The fourfold breakdown is used in the electronic reports.
An additional two-fold classification is available on the database:
Large Urban (40 000 or more) Small Urban + Rural (Less than 40 000 + Non-Urban) Note that the RAMS
definition of “Non-urban” comprises both the “Non-urban” and “Tribal”
areas of the Stats SA Population Census.
Home Language
Since 2001, all 11 official languages are available on the release datafiles as follows:
Afrikaans South Sotho Venda English Swazi Xhosa Ndebele Tsonga Zulu
North Sotho Tswana Other The language spoken most often at home is obtained, thus the language breakdowns on the release datafile provide unduplicated data.
* Note: The 15+ data as well as the data for Diary flooding in small towns, villages and
rural areas was available for the first time in the October 2009 RAMS release.
Page 2
Household
A household is made up of one or more people who live as a unit in the same home and who share food and other basic household goods. People who live in the same home, but who do not share food and other essential commodities are considered separate households.
Household Income
“Household income” is defined to respondents as the total monthly income of all earners within the household before tax and other deductions but including all sources of income i.e. salaries, pensions, government grants, and income from investments.
In cases of refusal to answer, household income is estimated by interviewers.
Household Purchaser
Any respondent of either gender who claims to be solely or partly responsible for the day-to-day purchases of the household is described as a household purchaser.
There may be more than one person who could claim to be a household purchaser within any given household, but only one would be interviewed.
The RAMS datafile has a filter code for “household purchaser”.
Extended Metropolitan areas
A metropolitan area may be described as a parent municipality together with the adjoining areas which are urban in character and which are economically and socially linked to the parent city or town. It may thus comprise more than one legally constituted local authority.
The following extended metropolitan areas are provided for in the RAMS database:
Bloemfontein
Cape Town
Cape Town Fringe Area
Durban
East London
eMalahleni / Witbank
Greater Johannesburg (Alexandra, Jhb, Sandton, Soweto, Randburg)
Kimberley
Pietermaritzburg
Port Elizabeth / Uitenhage
Pretoria
Reef (Urban Gauteng excl. Jhb, Pta, Vaal)
Soweto
Vaal (Sasolburg, Vanderbijlpark, Vereeniging)
Province The nine provincial boundaries in the RAMS sample coincide with those of Stats SA.
Radio Listening
The following definition of radio listening is included in the Radio Diary: By radio listening we mean…
- That you personally listened to the radio - it may be all of a programme or only part of it.
- It does not matter how you listened to it - via a radio set, a computer , a cellphone, the television, satellite, or any other means - nor does it matter where you listened to it.
Time Spent Listening
The average number of hours people listen to the radio, either across a day, or across a week.

Universe
Universe
The RAMS universe covers adults, who are 15 years or older, and who live in South Africa. All private households (houses, cluster houses, townhouses, individual flats), hostels, retirement villages, backyard dwellings, informal dwellings and residential hotels are covered. Domestic workers are included. The universe is updated every year, using the most recent population updates available from demographers, based on projections from the South African Census data. IHS provides the estimates from their Regional eXplorer suite of models.
Population Update 2014
The RAMS Nov 13 survey applied the mid-year 2013 population updates provided by IHS, which incorporated the 2011 Census results from StatsSA. The resultant population updates for 2013 were different to the previous population estimates for a number of demographics and set a new benchmark for all RAMS surveys. Population figures for RAMS Oct 14 were marginally updated using the mid-year 2014 population estimates supplied by IHS. The next update will be with the Nov 2015 RAMS release.

The RAMS Sample
Introduction For RAMS 2004 up to 2008, a national sample of 12 412 was used in the first half of the year, with household ‘flooding’ in large urban areas, and a further sample of 8 654 in large urban areas only during the second half of the year. To reflect a national radio listening picture in the second half of the year as well, the listening patterns for small urban/rural areas were carried forward from the first half of the year.
Since 2009, a second small urban/rural sample was carried in the second half of the year. This resulted in a national diary keeper sample of over 25 000, with household “flooding” in both urban and rural areas throughout the year. Due to budgetary constraints, the small urban/ rural fieldwork was not conducted during July-December 2013. Once again, to reflect a national radio listening picture in the second half of the year as well, the listening patterns for small urban/rural areas were carried forward from the first half of the year (i.e. from January-June 2013). In 2014, a full national sample was re-introduced for RAMS.
The RAMS sample is an area-stratified probability sample, built up by clusters of 2 addresses. The sample of addresses is selected proportionate to the number of adults in the universe, within the nine provinces, and within four community size groupings within province. All metropolitan areas, cities, and large towns (40 000+ populations) are automatically included in the sample. A random selection of smaller urban communities (towns, villages and rural areas) are also chosen. Within each of these strata, an equal number of males and females are included, while age is rotated using a Random Grid to ensure a balanced age spread.
Selection of addresses
The Nielsen GeoFrame is used to select actual addresses or geographical coordinates. The residential addresses in most (but not all) urban communities are listed in the Nielsen GeoFrame, which comprises 7,482,975 addresses. These addresses are arranged alphabetically by suburb and within suburb, by street name. Addresses are drawn from the GeoFrame using a random start, fixed interval technique. One other address is then selected in the immediate vicinity of each address drawn from the Geoframe, to form clusters of two.
For areas not covered in the address register, GPS coordinates are provided. Within a chosen community or magisterial district, a grid is overlaid electronically and random coordinates selected. These coordinates are supplied to the interviewers who use GPS devices to navigate to the specified point. Clusters are formed by instructing interviewers to move three dwellings to the right for the second household. The final coordinates are captured and used to check on the accuracy of the sample selection.
Selection of respondents
Each address is pre-designated as one which is to provide a male or female respondent in equal proportions, with the exception of mines, hostels, and domestics, where the point is allocated either to males or females as relevant.
At each address, the individual with whom the main Radio Diary is placed, is determined by means of a Random Grid using the number of adults of the relevant gender in the household and their age order.
Every respondent in the RAMS sample is requested to complete a Radio Diary.
Supplementary diaries are also placed with all other adult members of the household nationally. This is known as the Household Flooding technique. (Up to 2008, there was no “flooding” in small towns, villages and rural areas - a Radio Diary was placed only with the main respondent).
Page 6
Substitution Substitution of originally selected addresses is allowed only after 4 unsuccessful calls. No second selection of respondents is allowed in the same household, if the selected respondent is not available.
When substituting, the address to the left and then to the right of the originally selected dwelling is taken.
In order for substitution to as close as possible resemble the original sample, the same selection procedure is used at the substitute address as at the original address, that is, by means of a Random Grid. However, the random selection is only from those adults of the same gender present in the household at the time the interview is conducted.
Dispro-portional Sampling
To provide sub-samples adequate as bases for separate analysis, disproportional sampling is applied in a number of cases (See Table 3). However, once the data has been collected, it is then weighted back to the true proportions of the population in coverage areas.

Survey Technique Methodology From 2009 until 2012, fieldwork for RAMS was undertaken nationally throughout the year i.e.
both large urban and small urban/rural areas were covered for all 6 waves. Due to budgetary constraints, RAMS fieldwork during the last 3 waves of 2013 covered only urban areas. For reporting, the latest available 6-month small urban/rural database is combined with the latest two large urban samples, to provide the national report. Respondents are handed a self-completion Radio Diary to fill in over a period of 7 days, for which an incentive is offered. As of 2009, the flooding methodology was expanded to include small towns, villages and rural areas. Supplementary diaries are placed with all adult members of the household nationally. Nationally, the placement of diaries with respondents is spread evenly across the days of the week.
Respondent Briefing
The main respondent and all other adults in the household who are there and available at the time of contact are briefed on how to fill in the Radio Diary. Pages requiring completion are Monday to Sunday pages, as well as “Places Listened Yesterday”, “Past 4 weeks” and “Favourite Radio Stations” pages.
Illiterate Respondents
To provide for illiterate RAMS Diary keepers, interviewers ask another household member who can read and write to assist the respondent on a daily basis with the completion of the diary. If there is no suitable helper in the respondent's household, someone living nearby is recruited to do so. This person is paid a nominal amount for his/her assistance.
The RAMS Radio Diary format
Separate pages are provided for each of seven consecutive days from Monday to Sunday. On each of these pages, respondents fill in details of their radio listening for each quarter hour of the day, from 00h00 to 24h00. A Key Page containing a list of radio station mnemonics is provided, which respondents use to indicate the name of the radio station listened to during a particular quarter hour. On this page, space is also provided for respondents to record their listenership to any radio station other than those listed in the Diary. In addition to the 7 day pages, there are three further pages: one on which the respondents record all the places where they listened to the radio “Yesterday”, one on which they record the radio stations they listened to during the “Past 4 weeks” and the last on which they record their favourite radio station/s, up to a maximum of three stations.
Page 9
Sample Weighting
The adult RAMS universe estimates which are provided in Table 2 are used to calculate weights within a series of weighting cells. The following demographic variables are used, all interlaced, to design the weighting matrix: Province : The nine provinces of South Africa Community Size : 250 000+ (Metropolitan) 40 000 - 249 999 (City / Large Town) 500 -39 999 (Small Town / Village) Less than 500 (Rural) Gender : Male, female Age : 15-24, 25-34, 35-49, 50+ Language : Two groups, where relevant
Reporting Format
RAMS results will be released electronically to the computer bureaux 4 times in 2015. Reporting is on rolling data i.e. for each release, reporting is on two interviewing waves. Because the fieldwork extends across a number of weeks, usually 10, all the RAMS results reflect average audiences across the entire fieldwork period. In addition, station audiences for the total population are provided electronically for all national and community radio stations.
Fieldwork Period Fieldwork for the four 2015 waves of RAMS take place during January-March, April-June,
July-September and September-December.
Page 10
RAMS Database
Detailed analysis of results can be done using the electronic database which is available on the day of the industry presentation. The following codes are available on the RAMS
databases:
Radio stations listened to during a 7-day period
Times listened to each station, for each day of the week, for each quarter hour of the day from 00h00 to 24h00
Radio stations listened to in the past 4 weeks
Favourite radio stations
The data can be analysed in the following ways:
Quarter hour audience
This is the number of listeners to a station during one particular quarter hour. The calculation is done by adding the weights of respondents who listened during a specific quarter hour.
Nett audience The nett audience is an unduplicated audience, because a listener is counted only once, even if he/she listened to more than one quarter hour of a programme.
Average quarter hour audience
To calculate the average quarter hour audience, the listeners of each quarter hour are added together and then the total is divided by the number of quarter hours you are looking at or analysing.
Gross audience
To calculate this, the number of listeners per quarter hour are added up, across a programme, a day or a week. Duplication is possible as the same person can be listening during more than one quarter hour.
Multiple day audience
The same quarter hour audience is calculated separately for each day of the week.
Page 11
Gold Standard Calculation Procedures The basic inputs to the Radio Reach, Frequency and Share calculations are described below.
Spot Ratings These are required for every spot in the schedule. For the quarter hour in which the spot was transmitted and within the analysis universe: Spot reach = 100 x Nett Audience Population
Average Daily Reach
Required for each of Monday to Sunday. Daily reach = 100 x Nett Daily Audience Population
Average Weekly Reach
Weekly reach = 100 x Nett Weekly Audience Population
Daily/ Weekly Frequency
Frequency = Sum of Quarter Hours Reach
Market Share
Market shares are based on average listening for the period you are interested in. So for example if you needed the market Share for Monday to Friday, you would calculate the gross quarter hour listening for an average Monday to Friday for each released station plus “other radio” and “other community radio” by summing all the quarter hour listening for each individual day, Monday through Friday. Then percentage each station’s gross on the total radio gross to obtain the share.
Page 12
Reliability of Estimates
All sample surveys are subject to sampling errors. However, if a probability sampling technique is used, it is possible to calculate the size of the sampling error which applies to a specific sample. All the samples for RAMS are probability samples for which error margins can be calculated.
Two variables, the numerical size of the sample and the level of penetration which was measured, play a role in the size of the sampling error of a specific sample. The following formula is used to calculate the sampling error:
sampling error = p x (100 - p) x 1,96 n
where: p = penetration level or percentage of listeners
n = sample size Table 5 can be used to obtain an estimate of the margin of error for rounded sample sizes, without doing the calculation.

Criteria for the Reporting of Individual Stations
All licensed (by ICASA) and on-air radio stations have a listenership figure in the RAMS Radio Services Report. The criterion for releasing a radio station on the database is a minimum of 40 7-day listeners to that station. Users are however warned that whilst incidence figures within demographic groups have a reasonably small margin of error, profile data for stations with a small respondent base close to 40 could have a margin of error at the 50% level of plus or minus 15.5%.
