…and so much more!

We believe we have done it again! The Recreation Centre offers winter programs that will entice you and your family to get away from the television and put away all hand held electronic devices. Once you’ve read what’s available, you won’t even think about winter hibernation. You will be among the first to apply for one of the many dozens of recreational opportunities included on pages 6-15.Looking for some fast-paced physical exercise? Pickleball is all the rage at the Ramara Rec Centre and it’s back! And, as usual, our programs include a host of cardio and aerobic opportunities to help you keep fit over the long, cold winter. Check out the descriptions on the program pages for aerobox circuit, Zumba, line dancing, or Killer Kardio.

We even have martial arts instruction for young children and families and gymnastics for tiny tots. For those interested in spending some quiet time away from home while learning a new skill, try the Scrapbooking Day led by the talented Stephanie Stanton; learn how to knit your first pair of socks from one of the region’s most skilled knitters and pattern makers, Deb Gemmell; or learn to paint from the gifted local artist, Doug Cooper. Many favourites as well as new programs are back including walking and hiking, yoga and aquafit. Seniors please check out the VON Smart free program that helps improve balance, strength and flexibility.Lastly, we offer self-improvement or special interest programs, youth

programs and some very special events you’ll find throughout the program listings and on pages 14 and 15.We hope that the variety of programs will interest you and your family and inspire you to apply. Be active this winter and enjoy what Ramara Township has organized for you and your family.

On October 27, 2014, residents of Ontario exercised their democratic right to vote, electing the politicians who have the biggest impact on daily life. Our municipal representatives live in the neighbourhood, shop at local stores and use local roads. They send their kids to the same schools as yours and attend the same events. And they will spend the next 4 years working hard to make sure you are proud to live in this township. On December 1st they took an oath to serve you but they will need your help. Along with staff, they ask you to play a role in the future of the Township of Ramara by getting involved in a committee or on a board. Many residents may not know about citizen involvement on boards or committees. Citizens help with many important Township of Ramara decisions, decisions that are made by council after they have considered the recommendations coming from people just like you. It’s easy to get involved and the application process is quite painless. You’ll find a brief

Examples of citizen boardsor committees:

Youth Committee: seeks to enrich the lives of the youth in Ramara by identifying youth related issues and empowering youth to make positive changes. Ten youth members and 3 adults are appointed from the public at large. Meetings are monthly. See page 5 for more details.

Community Policing Committee: the role is to identify and resolve social and criminal issues throughout the community. Thirteen members from the public at large are appointed for the term of council. Meetings are monthly.

Ramara Public Library Board: responsible for planning and policy decisions regarding the library services, 6 members of the public at large are appointed for the term of council. Meetings are held monthly except during the summer months.

A complete list of committees and boards is on the township website www.ramara.ca or call the township office at 705-484-5374.

2-page application form on the township’s website which asks, among other things, what board or committee you are interested in joining and your reasons for seeking the appointment. The township will also want to know what qualifications or knowledge you would bring to the township and to your committee of choice. This information helps the township appoint the right people to the appropriate board or committee and goes a long way to making sure that everyone is happy working in an area of interest. You may, if you wish and if you qualify, sit on more than one board or committee. Volunteer members of township boards and committees offer an important contribution to the community. Appointees not only bring their education and life experience to the table, they bring their enthusiasm, new ideas and a point of view that can only come from a citizen volunteer. Consider what you could bring to the township. You can take a seat at the table to help shape the future of your community.

Residents of Ramara Township are known for their volunteerism. Some choose to work on non-profit boards of directors or on one of the many related committees. Other volunteers include parents and grandparents who volunteer to help with school day trips, coach hockey and soccer teams, help to deliver meals to seniors, or join teams of volunteers to help organize and support community events. Whatever choices local volunteers make, we know they make an important and vital impact on Ramara Township. What we don’t know enough about is the impact youth and young adult volunteers make on our community or, in particular, the positive difference they make in the lives of young people who live here.A fine example of youth volunteerism is evident on the Ramara Youth Committee, a township committee that was formed 7 years ago. This committee gives youth

a voice in the community, a chance to learn how to be effective leaders and the opportunity to meet and socialize with residents of all ages – important skills to

learn as they move into adulthood. All township committees run for the duration of a council term. The most recent Ramara Youth Committee, from

2010-2014, consisted of 5 youth members, 2 adult mentors, a staff liaison and one member of council. Near the end of their term they presented a deputation to

council discussing their successes, challenges and recommendations for the next term, 2014-2018.The deputation addressed the success of the committee’s flagship event - monthly dances for children in grades 4-8. Although this monthly dance started about a decade ago, it started to gain steam once the Youth Committee assumed responsibility 7 years ago. And for the past 4 years attendance has continued to grow with an average of 130 kids participating and one dance attracting as many as 180. The dance is an important event that children have grown to count on and, it appears, the Youth Committee is determined to

continue organizing.During the current committee’s term they have attended defibrillator training,

TAI CHI

SELF-DEFENCE

Thursdays

Thursdays

Tai Chi is a very effective way to strengthen, tone, and balance the body and mind, by combining movement and breathing with relaxed and focused intention. This class presents the 10 movement routine in a way that is easy to follow, simple to learn, and which is proven to provide a feeling of relaxation and well-being. This is suitable for all ages and abilities - we focus on a fun and relaxed learning environment. Ian Sinclair is an internationally respected tai chi teacher with more than 35 years experience and with students in 6 continents.

Ian Sinclair is a martial artist with more than 35 years experience and with students on 6 continents. His martial art of choice is tai chi chuan, which he also teaches for health, fitness, and relaxation. The most effective self defence training teaches that real power is available to everyone. Gender, size, strength, agility, may be factors, but seldom matter in the way that people think. In this class you will find strength you never knew you had. You will discover how your own apparent weaknesses can be turned into strengths, just as an opponent’s own strength can be exploited as a weakness. Most importantly, effective self defence training is a way to transform an inherently violent world with compassion, peace, mutual respect and self empowerment.

A Journey through Rama Mnjikaning History

Fish Weir: At Narrows. Consisting of closely spaced stakes driven

into the bottom, perhaps with interlaced material, and extending almost completely across the narrows, the weir directed fish to small openings where they were captured with nets

Samuel de Champlain: During the fall of 1615, the French explorer, in the company of a Huron raiding party, passed near the small narrows separating Lake Couchiching and Lake Simcoe.

CN Rail Line: closed on September 21, 1996 – handled Canadian National’s daily freight trains between Toronto and North Bay, and VIA’s Canadian on its run between Toronto and Vancouver.

Monck Road: named to honour Charles Stanley Monck, Governor-in-Chief of the Canadian province from 1861. The road extended 160 kilometres east to the Hastings Road at Bancroft where it joined other roads to Ottawa.

Trail Extension: Trail currently ends at Mara/Rama Boundary Road.

Swing Bridge: The soon to be removed disused swing bridge at Atherley is one of the last visible remaining structures of a once thriving rail network. The bridge was open and closed by hand with a crank. The bridge operator rowed by skiff out to the bridge to crank it.

Rama Road: Trail follows along west side of Rama Road, then crosses Rama Road at traffic light. Follow trail on north side of Monck Road until abandoned rail line.

Start of Ramara Trail at theNarrows Fish Weirs

The trail starts in the south at the historic fish weirs that were built by the Mnjikaning First Nation people. “Mnjikaning” is an Ojibway word meaning “the place of the fish fence.” The trail follows the abandoned CN rail line through pastoral countryside, crossing the Rama Road/Monck Road intersection, along Monck Road to the Trail sign and extending to Mara-Rama Boundary Road. Total distance is just over 5 Km. Lake Couchiching means “outlet” or “little lake at the end of a big lake” in Ojibway.

organized a hunter education course, a youth photo contest and movie nights. They also brought in professionals to present seminars on summer jobs, scholarships and leadership; set up a Facebook page; made donations to a scholarship fund and flood relief; and created a bursary program for high school students. One of the reasons the committee presented to council was to discuss current challenges which include the difficulty of marketing to their audience, especially in schools, and finding events that teens will find interesting enough to attend.Chief among the challenges, however, is burnout. This volunteer committee dedicates many hours of hard work. Everyday life responsibilities often results in conflicts in schedules for some and, therefore, not all volunteers can manage to help with everything. To improve the committee’s chance to grow, the committee recommended that council increase the number of youth volunteers. Council listened and agreed, opening the door for the new committee to move forward with some extra hands and fresh faces. The 2014-2018 committee will see the number of youth members grow from 6 to ten. Volunteerism enriches communities across the region and youth volunteerism is where it all starts. The Ramara Youth Committee is an example of how involving youth improves the lives of children. Because of those youth volunteers our community is certainly richer. If you want to jump on board and be part of a group of peers and mentors who create important and exciting recreational opportunities, prepare an application and send it to the township.
