TRANSCRIPT OF THE MISSIONARY JOURNALRALPH H. DAVISCENTRAL PACIFIC MISSION(JAPANESE PEOPLE IN HAWAII)1947-1949Journal writ ing while on my mission had great gaps at times. This transcript of my journals is supplemented by my personalhistory written in 1992 and copies given to my family for Christmasof that year. I devoted a chapter in that history to myimpressions of my mission. It was a wonderful experience to servethe Japanese people in Hawaii. As I review what little Idid record I find I feel a joy offifty years ago. I hope that this addition to my history willexpress to you my love fo r the Gospel and the privi lege to serve inthe kingdom.

3 March 1947 - (Note: My call was received in December and I leftfo r Hawaii in the later par t of January, but thefirst journal entry doesn't appear until March).Spent an hour in study class. The rest of the day was spentat the home we were staying in . We had missionary meeting tonightand was told about the convention of missionaries that will be heldhere next week.We went to a cottage meeting at Sister Tanigawa's this eveningand we found out why she won't come out to church. She has atestimony of the truth but she has a physical problem that isembarrassing in public. We were served pop after the meeting andElder Romney accidentally drank Sister Tanigawa's half full bottleof pop. Was his face red when I told him after the meeting.

4 March 1947We had our study class in the morning and then E lder Romneyand I left to go out to the home to f inish paint ing it. We havefinished painting the floors and some of the furniture. The houseis now ready to move in except for arranging the furniture andputting in the beds. There will be a big conference next week and all themissionaries from all the islands will be here.Tonight we had our weekly Japanese (language) class.

Tl~~March 1~9T7Today we had the last session of our missionary conference. We finished the testimonies this morning and then Pres. Cowleyspoke fo r an hour to us. He is a great man with a lot of humor andgood advice. I have never been to such a meeting as the one

yesterday. We bore testimonies fo r ten hours and yet we didn't gett ired of hearing them. Iwish that Mother and Dad could have beenthere fo r they would have thril led at testimonies of those Sistersand Elders. Iwent to take some pictures today and found that mycamera was broken. Idon't know how it was done. I have been sobusy that Ihaven't kept the diary up to date.

12 March 1947All the missionaries of both missions went out to a privatebeach today. (Note: Two missions operated in Hawaii at the sametime - the Hawaiian Mission and the Central Pacific Mission. Also, missionaries were allowed to go swimming in those days, even tookthe mission president and Pres. Cowley with us.). We playedfootbal l , vol leybal l and went swimming. I have never played sohard or had so much fun. Igot pretty well sun burned.Last night the saints gave a party fo r the CPM missionaries. It was a nice party but Iwas too worn out to enjoy it. We decidedto move to our new house tomorrow.I was sure sorry that my camera was broken yesterday. Theweather was perfect and there were so many beautiful scenes toshoot.13 March 1947Today Ihave been in Honolulu a month. Doesn't seem like it.Taught two rel igious education classes this morning but didn't putall I had in it because I feel pretty stiff from yesterday. Wewent to the V.A. to see about Elder Romney's dental work. Imustwrite my draft board about change of address. We moved out to the house this afternoon and the gas doesn'twork now. There will be a man up in the morning to fix it. Ireceived a book and maps today and also a letter from Dad.15 March 1947We went to the dentist again but he couldn't do much for ElderRomney. We went through most of the stores buying stuff. Wentback to Malamako to get some things that I had forgot when wemoved. We were invited out to supper at a Hawaiian family. They hadfried chicken and was it good.16 March 1947Our Sunday school went off alr ight today. Also, we had ourRelief Society and Priesthood meeting together. At sacramentmeeting Bro. Lunt of the Stake spoke to us. I have been asked tospeak to Kalihi Ward on Apri l 6th for ten minutes. We went to dinner at Bill Nako 1 s place and most of the branchmembers were there. We had a great Japanese dinner. AfterSacrament Meeting we had a fireside at Sister Okimoto's home and

she also feed us a b ig supper. Ialways eat to much because it isso good. This Japanese food is very good.17 March 1947This morning as we were preparing breakfast, Sister San Fancame in and brought us four eggs, some oranges and a pan full ofhot muffins. These people are so good to us. We stud ied fo r anhour on the B.of M. and then went tracting. We got caught in arain storm and got good and wet. Tonight as I was preparingsupper, Iwas about to put the spam on to fry when Sister San Fanknocked and had four steaks smothered in vegetables for us withfour baked potatoes. It was good.Tonight we had two cottage meetings. At the end of themeeting at Sister Tanigawa's she invited us to stay and have apiece of cake and a glass of milk. It ended up with us eating abowl of rice and a fried fish along with the milk and cake. Shealso gave us a dozen oranges to bring home. This morning SisterDerring brought us a dozen eggs. At this rate we won't have to buyvery much. The Relief Society is making some curtains fo r ourhouse and also are having a house warming. Sister Tsuya is givingus some pictures to put on the walls.18 March 1947This morning started out with us cooking our own breakfast andwe really burned the potatoes. We spent an hour studying theB.ofM. and got into quite a discussion on the 11 Chapter of 1Nephi .We took our laundry down to Malamako to do this morning. Whenwe got there the washer was being used and we had to wait awhilebefore we could use it.

In the afternoon we visited four investigators and then wentto Malamako again to a missionary meeting. We then spent an hourand half in a Japanese class trying to learn a song and Istilldon't know it. Some day I hope to be able to master the Japaneselanguage .19 March 1947This morning we had hot cakes again fo r breakfast. We must bein a rut. We dashed o ff to our Religious Education classes ofwhich we had three of them today. (Note: Religious Education was apar t of the Hawaiian school system at that time and that was par tof the missionaries duties to teach at the schools in theredistricts.). In between R.E. classes we visited a formerinvestigator of the church back in 43. She invited us in and saidthat she was now investigating the Seventh-day Adventist but thatshe would l ike to have us come over some time and help her with herstudy.Tonight Sister San Fan brought in our supper again._Ihate t.oaccept it because these people are pretty poor but they willreceive blessings from it. As Elder Cowley said, "Don't deprivethese people of the blessings they can receive by helping you."This evening Elder Romney and I went visiting formerinvestigators. We talked with a women who use to belong to the

reorganites as a child but now she asked us to prove the BofM fromthe Bible and to prove the principles of the Church from the Biblewhich is r ight up our al ley. We also went to a man who's body isunder developed so that he is physically the strength of a smallboy. This man has just about finished the B.ofM. and we asked himwhat he thought of it. He replied that it must be true fo r no mancould write that book.20 March 1947This morning Ihad a time gett ing out of bed. Iwanted to laythere all morning. We taught our two R.E. classes this morning andthen went t ract ing. We didn't have very much success. At twoo'clock we went to the dentist. I came home and bought somegroceries and cooked supper. I had potatoes, hamburger gravy, carrots, salad and peaches. It was a good supper even if Isay so.Tonight we held two street meetings and they were f lopscompared to the last two we held. We didn't have the feelingtonight. Maybe we are just to t ired. (Note: probably nottiredness as much as lacking the spirit.).21 March 1947This morning Iwrote a long letter to Bud (Wilson C. Wood -fr iend) but as yet haven't mailed it. We spent the day tractingand had some interesting contacts. We had the spirit of the Lordwith us today. We went over to Okimoto's at noon fo r the purposeof getting lunch and we got it. But when we arrived there we foundtwo other missionaries eating. They all know a good place to go toeat . We held our M.I.A. tonight and I had five boys out. Theyseemed very interested in the lesson on tobacco. Tomorrow we aretaking the boys to the beach. Kill two birds with one stone.22 March 1947This morning I didn't get up until 7:30. We had a latebreakfast and cleaned up the place. I talked with Sister San Fanfor awhile and helped her with the program that she has on primary. We were suppose to go to the beach today but our boys stood us up.We were left with a big lunch so we ate it ourselves.Ibought myself a new hat. It isn't exactly what Iwanted butwhat Iwanted costs too much. We had an old folks party tonight. All the members were to bring their parents or some o ld person. The object was to try to make the parents more fr iendly towards thechurch and to let them see the missionaries first hand. The partywas Japanese style. We cooked the food on the tables in smallcharcoal stoves. Everyone enjoyed themselves. After the party wewent over to the Stake Gold and Green Bal l for awhile. ElderRomney and Harrison lost their shoes at the party._23 March 1947This morning, Sunday School was a little bigger and the classI sat in was very good. We had a misunderstanding today on chow.

We thought that Sister Okimoto had invited us down to lunch rightafter Sunday School but they never made a move to take us down. Sowe went home and fixed our own lunch. About five Sister Okimotosent Bill Nako up in her car to pick us up and take us down to herplace for dinner. She had invited for later in the day.Tonight we combined with the Hawaiian Ward and had two of ouryoung Relief Society girls speak. It was wonderful to hear them. They weren't experienced speakers but what they said came from theheart. It was a thrilling meeting. Sister Okimoto (Relief SocietyPresident) bore her testimony and told about one of the girls thatspoke who wasn't member because her parents wouldn't approve andyou don't go against the Japanese parents consent.24 March 1947Breakfast was kind of skimpy. We didn't have enough pancakef lour and no eggs, bread or milk. We have got to get on the balland watch our food supply. Today we tracted for five and halfhours and had a good time. We spent over an hour at Mrs. Chung'shome as she told about her husband who was a prisoner of theJapanese in Hong Kong. We didn't have to worry about talking therefo r she did it all. Now Iknow how it must feel to the people whol isten to us. We had one cottage meeting tonight. We are studyingthe bible at Tanigawa's. She gave us a dozen eggs and a pietonight to bring home with us.25 March 1947Today we traded partners. Elder Owen and Iwent out on ElderOwen's route. We had a good time and it seemed good to be withsomeone different. While tracting Pres. Weenig and Pres. Cowleycame driving up. Pres. Cowley said that if we were tried to throwout tracts in the gutter and go to a show. He better be careful Imight take him up on that. Today Icashed $40.00 worth of checksand also that government check of income tax refund.Tonight we had our missionary meeting and Japanese class.Afterward we went to the l ibrary and I looked up chemical formulas. Two new missionaries are coming in tomorrow on the Matsonia.26 March 1947Today was the "force march day". We kept moving from oneschool to another. At noon we went into town so that Elder Romneycould f inish up with the dentist. Iread a newspaper and found outthat0 a lot of changes have taken place in the last few months. We had a special missionary meeting tonight and the newmissionaries were there that had come in today. Elder Cowley waswith us and spoke for about a half hour. That man is wonderful.I could l isten to him all night. New assignments were made butnone ofthem affected me except that we may have more R.E. classesto teach now.27 March 1947

This morning Elder Owen's made some biscuits fo r breakfast. They were the hardest and heaviest things Ihave seen. Iate them.We had two R.E. classes this morning and at the second one we hada party and showed the kids the film King of Kings. We bought 55candy bars and gave them away. This afternoon we visited investigators. We went to Mrs.Tanigawa's place at 2:45 and got out at 4:45. She made us staywhile she cooked fish for us and prepared a small meal. She isvery good to us. Iwish she would come out. Ithink it would helpher with the sickness she has.We went Branch teaching tonight which will be the last timefo r us. We cut it short and gave a short thought on repentancefrom the Improvement Era. I am dead t ired tonight.28 MARCH 1947Today Iwent tracting with Elder Harrison. He has a goodsystem and Ienjoyed the day very much. We spent over two hours inthe home of a Catholic but I am afraid it was a waste of time.Tonight at Mutual we had four boys out and they seemed to be veryinterested about my talk on tobacco. I gave them a lot ofscientif ic data which they l iked better than the spiritualinformation.29 March 1947Stayed in bed this morning until about 7 o'clock. It wasraining a little this morning and then qui t . We went to theHonolulu Tabernacle to decorate it for the Gold and Green balltonight. We fixed the place all up but as we were ready to go homeit started to rain and lasted about a half hour. We finally wereable to go home. The ball went o ff alr ight and the girls lookednice in their formal dresses. The only trouble was that the boyswould sit around and look at one another instead of dancing. Ireceived my slides today.30 March 1947This morning was just about the same as usual. We had ourSunday School. Isat in Katherine Nagasawa's class and helped herwhen I could. Here is a girl that goes to a Catholic school butcomes to our Sunday School. She asks a lot of questions and shesays she is confused because of differences in the two doctrines. Our sacrament service was very nice but Pres. Clissol, who wasto speak didn't show up. Bro. Morris came and Icalled on him. Hegave a wonderful talk for such a short notice. After meeting wewere invited to Okimoto's to spend the evening.31 March 1947This morning we cleaned house. While doing this Elder Greavescame and told us to meet at Malamako at 2 o'clock for a specialmissionary meeting. Pres. Weenig had been in Molaki and wasn't tobe back until Tuesday. With him coming in early we all expected to

be shipped to Molaki. When we got to the meeting Pres. Weenig told us that he wasimpressed to have all. missionary work stopped and fo r us to visitour area's and to visit all members, investigators, R.E. students, and all that attend Sunday School to find out the names andaddresses of all their relatives in Japan. It is so that packagescan be sent to those in need.1Apri l 1947Apri l fools day. This morning we s ta rted to compile our namesand addresses into a master list. It took us a half day to dothat. In the afternoon we visited 12 homes. At some places itsl ike pull ing teeth to get the information. Some of the peoplestill are leery of the F.B.I .We worked at night picking up those people who aren't home inthe day time. I get so mad at my companion because he spends tomuch time at each house. We won't be able to f inish unless wehurry along and stop wasting time.2 April 1947This morning we started out again bright and ear ly. Today wecovered about twenty eight homes. Some we will have to come backat night to pick up people who weren't at home.Tonight we had one lady refuse to us any information. This isthe first one to refuse.Ihave been t ry ing to think of what Iwould tell the fellowsin M.I.A. Friday. Ialso have got to think of something fo r Sundaynight in Kahili Ward.I haven't been so tired fo r a long time. We even got wettonight coming home. Sister Tanigawa gave us round steak to eat.3 Apr i l 1947This morning we had the usual - hotcakes fo r breakfast. Weare in a rut. We spent all day canvasing in the area fo r names ofrelat ives in Japan. One women refused to give us the information. She was pretty leery of the whole thing and probably thought thatwe were FBI .Tonight we had a good turn out for enlistment drive but mostof the names we had already visited once. While we were out today Pres. Weening came driving past us andnever even saw us. He just went rocketing down the street. I'mgoing to kid him about that.4 Apri l 1947_This morning we started on the last of the welfare canvasing.I am dead tired from it though. We had to walk up Kam IV road tothe top and down Kahil i road. Iam glad this is finally done. Wecovered a lot of people and invited a lot of them out to S.S. Hopethey come.We had the best M.I.A. I have seen fo r weeks. It really

worked out smooth. They had an amateur hour fo r the activity.5 Apr i l 1947The early par t of the morning was spent at the tabernacle fo ra baptismal service fo r Gladys Yonashiro. It was most inspiringand Pres. Weenig spoke for a few minutes on Easter. After the service we went to Kaniohi with the Elders to workon the welfare farm. Ihad a good time chopping down trees. The evening was spent coloring eggs at Okimoto's. Weprepared the eggs fo r the kids in S.S. Ihope they l ike them. Wehave about twelve dozen eggs now.6 Apri l 1947This Easter Sunday morning means a lot to me. This the firstEaster when I have had so much responsibi l i ty fo r a meeting. Mytwo counselors do most of the work but it still rests on me.Our Easter program in S.S. went o ff very well . The attendancewas up to 114. It will be down again next week. We also had a bigfast meeting. We heard some beautiful testimonies.

We went to the tabernacle at 2 o'clock fo r union meeting.Pres. Weenig talked to us. I talked in the Kalihi Ward tonight.I don't think it was much of a talk. I also confirmed GladysYonashiro a member today.7 Apri l 1947This morning Elder Romney and I were in our morning studyclass when we heard a knock at the door. Iwent to the door andthere was Pres. Weenig. He said that he wanted to paint the housetoday. There is never a dul l moment. Anything can happen and itsusual ly does. This evening we held our cottage meeting and then some of theboys of the branch and us Elders went to visit an inactive member. He has a small room and there were six of us there in the room.8 Apri l 1947We started early this morning in painting the house. Pres.Weenig and some Elders arrived at about ten. We finished the houseabout four in the afternoon. We have yet to finish painting thefront porch. We needed a saw today and Pres. Weenig asked me if Iknew my neighbors. I told him no. He said to go try to borrow asaw anyway. I tried and Igot the saw even though the man didn'tspeak english.

Sister San Fong fixed us lunch today. It was a good lunch andwe ate it on the lawn in back of our house.Visited Chester Ishimoto tonight. He is very smart but isdrifting away.9 Apri l 1947This morning Iwas the only one who ate breakfast. The othertwo Elders were fasting fo r someone and Elder Romney had a swollenjaw so he didn't eat.

We got back to our usual RE classes this morning. Thechildren seemed to be a little restless after their springvacation. We took the bus to our Kahi Uka class. We couldn't seewalking up that hill today. We played basketball this afternoonand we had three boys who came out .Tonight we tried to arrange three cottage meetings and onlyone person could do it. At one house we spent an hour talkingabout the Hawaiian Pineapple Co.10 Apri l 1947This morning we got back to eating hot cakes again. They seemto be the most filling thing to eat fo r breakfast. Eggs cost toomuch for us to buy them.We taught our two schools this morning. At the first school,as Elder Romney was giving his par t of the lesson, I read a bookthat the school teacher had on her desk that was on Hawaiianlegends. At the next school I ran out of stories to tell on thelesson, so Itold them two Hawaiian legends. They really ate themup. We visited some investigators in the evening. Talked to twoof the girls that have asked fo r baptism.11 Apr i l 1947We held a two hour study class this morning, one hour aloneand one together . Elder Romney and I spent the rest of the daytracting and at three in the afternoon we went to Sister Tanigawa'shome and we didn't get away from there until 5:30. She made usstay until she cooked us some supper. Iwas very hungry and reallyhit the spot. We held our MIA this evening. I took my boys up tothe point where Brigham Young takes over as Pres. of the Church. After MIA we had a treasure hun t.12 Apri l 1947

It is a beautiful Saturday morning. We went to Malamakoa thismorning to pick up some stuff. Elder Romney also has a boi l on hisneck so we went to the doctor. The doctor gave him a shot and toldhim to put hot packs on it every three hours through the weekendand come back Monday morning. We went to the beach in theafternoon and had a swell time. Went to a show.13 Apri l 1947

Another Sunday morning has rol led around. For a change itisn't raining this morning. Sunday School was alright. Theattendance didn't drop o ff to badly. We studied for awhile in theafternoon and then went to Mission chapel to wait fo r sacramentmeeting. All the Branches met there to hear Dr. Hill speak. He isgoing to hold a SS convention next Sunday. Dr. & Sister Hill bothspoke and it was very good. After sacrament meeting Sister Okimoto came up to me and askedif we would go to supper at her house. Itold her Iwould be gladto come. The doctor lanced it and gave him a shot.He has to go back tomorrow. We then went shopping to find a suitto fit Elder Romney. We then went to a Japanese hospital to see amember who was sick. We found that she had just left. We held twocottage meetings tonight, one at Yoneshios and other at Nagasawa's.15 Apr i l 1947This morning we worked on tracting records until it was timeto go to the doctor. We just about caught up the t ract ing records. We went to the doctor about ten and she gave Elder Romney some moreshots. We spent most of the afternoon tracting and ran into peoplewho didn't believe anything to a Baptist minister.Last night we went down to Alice Okahar's place to hold acottage meeting. Her mother had some people come in unexpectedlyand they could only speak Japanese and so we left. We visitedMargaret Kekami for awhile too. Iwanted to go to Malamakoa afterto get a book and shirts but Romney wouldn't go.16 Apr i l 1947This was our forced march day. We had three schools to teach.Icarried my camera with me to take some pictures of flowers thatwe passed by. Ionly took one picture. After our second class wewent to Malamakoa to get a book and some shirts. Then went to ourthird class up Kalihi val ley. That class seemed to be extra noisytoday.Tonight we visited Bro. Okagi with the priesthood boys to seeif we could get him to greater activity. Worked on Branch records.17 Apr i l 1947Got back to having hot cakes fo r breakfast. The morning wasspent teaching RE classes. Went to see the doctor and to thelibrary. Elder Romney was looking up material on Brigham Young andS.L.C.

In the afternoon we went to Mrs Tanigawa's for a cottagemeeting. Afterwards she fixed dinner fo r us. It was the best Ihave tasted fo r a long time. Stayed home tonight and studied.Elder Romney went through the books he brought home. I read thePearl of G.P.18 Apr i l 1947Friday a usual beautiful day. Held study class and read someBuddhist l i terature. Every day we run across people who believe inBuddhism and we don't know much about it.Spent the morning tracting and went to Okimoto's at noon fo rlunch but they weren't home. with them. We did and spent the rest of the day talking on theKingdom. Mutual tonight was a flop.19 Apr i l 1947

Free day Ha Ha. Think of it nothing to do. We took ourlaundry to Malamakoa to use the washing machine . We took twosuitcases. We had sheets and everything under the sun. Now Iknowhow mother feels. After the laundry we went to town and boughtElder Romney a new suit . We went to the beach fo r all combinedBranches in Honolulu party. We had a good time but Ididn't getenough to eat. We had professional swimmers put on ademonstration.20 Apr i l 1947Sunday morning was another beautiful day. It is suppose to bea day of rest but fo r the missionaries it is the hardest day of theweek. Our SS was pretty good size. After SS we went to theTabernacle to hear the visitors service at 11:40. Elder Cowleyspoke at the meeting. He gave a wonderful talk to those who areinvestigating the church. In the afternoon the SS conventions washeld a t which Dr. Hill presided. (Dr. Hill was from the general SSboard.). After that we held our Sacrament meeting. Then we went toKalihi Ward and hear Dr. Hill speak again.21 Apr i l 1947The cupboard was bare - a slim breakfast. Right after a ladycame with a dozen eggs, 1 lb. of cheese, a dozen oranges and somebacon. Now we can eat. (Lord takes care of his servants).

Spent most of day t ract ing. We had a good day and wereinv ited in to a lot of homes that seemed nice. Two cottage meetingstonight, one at Yonashiro's but the one at Nagasawa's fell through.Violet Yonashiro had a lot of questions to ask. It makes us feelgood to have questions. Can goods were delivered today and also wereceived a lot of fresh vegetables from the saints.22 Apri l 1947Study and then tracting. For a change the day was good. Alot of people l istened to us and we were invited into quite a fewhomes. We talked to a reorganite fo r awhile and he said he didn'tknow exactly why the two churches split. He invited us to attendtheir services and said he would l ike to talk to us some othertime .Had supper at Okimoto's and then went to a cottage meeting atAlice Okahara's. We had a lovely time and explained the God Head. They all agreed our explanation was correct._3 Apr i l 1947As we were eating our eggs Sister Derring drove up and gave usa sack full of grapefru i t . Two will be stayingwith us temporarily until assigned partners.Tonight we visited four homes and got wet in a rain storm. Weasked Chester Ishamoto to speak in MIA on courtship and marriage.24 Apr i l 1947 - ThursdayWe had the new missionaries fo r breakfast so it took longer tocook. Itook Elder Lundgren (new Elder) with me to teach RE. Thisafternoon we spent shopping around town fo r a hat and things ElderLundgren needed. Ipicked up things that Ihave been wanting. This evening we went to a birthday party at Okimoto's forGrace. We had a b ig meal and a good time.25 Apri l 1947 - FridayWe rose early to go up Kalihi val ley. We went as far as thebus l ine went and then walked a mile further up and left the roadand hiked up the side of the mountain to a lovely spot where wewouldn't be bothered and could get close to God. We held amissionary meeting and bore testimonies. It was nice up there andthe spirit was with us. We read several sections of the D&C andfound several things cleared themselves up. There was one thingthat seemed small but it was raining when we left and we prayedthat it would be clear in the val ley. All the time we were theirit rained all around us but not where we were. We came back homeabout noon and on the way one of saints called us in as we passedher home and gave us each a glass of cold milk. The afternoon was spent in study. Took Elder Romney to thedoctor's fo r treatment of his boi l . Supper was brought in bySister San Fong. She is a good cook and has a generous heart . Weheld Mutual late. My boys seemed to be very interested in thestory of Johnson's army. They asked a lot of questions andafterwards we tied knots.26 April 1947 - SaturdayWe meet at Malamakoa to go on a beach par ty . The Elders fromall over the island came. We certainly had a swell time. Thewaves were big and would carry you up the beach. You had to becareful of the undertow.
