INTRODUCTIONINTRODUCTION

Dearfriends,

Thisyearwecelebrate the30theditionof theBajaPortalegre500.Thelargestandoldest national off road competition is a mythical one for allfans, national andinternational.

Tocommemoratethedatewehaveorganisedaphotoexhibitiondepictingthebest

oftheevent,itscompetitorsandallthosewhohaveparticipated.Besidesrecognizingtherelevanceofthesupport and involvement of the PortalegreMunicipality, this is also the moment to remember JoséMegreandallhehasdonefortheBaja.

Preciselyfor that reason, this year the starting ceremonywill be takingplace, for the first time, at theTarroGarden,inPortalegredowntown.

Thelayout is similar to that of previous years,with the Prologue (SSS1) and another stagewith 85 km(SS2)onFriday,October28th.TheendofSS2ismostlyheldonthesameroutastheprologue,offeringtheusuallargenumberofspectatorsanotheropportunitytowatchallcompetitors.

Since this layout makes it impossible to have the Mini Baja held as in other editions, this year theyoungsterriderswillbecompetingalong50kmofSS2onFriday.OnSaturdaytheywillcompetealong75kmofSS3.

BesidestheFIACrossCountryWorldCup,the30thBajaPortalegre500,isalsoeligibleforseveralFPAKandFMP national championships and trophies. The event is the last one for international and nationalchampionships,usualbeingdecisiveforseveraltitles.

BriefHistoryoftheEvent

TheBajaofPortalegrewasthefirstcross-countryeventheldinPortugal,inJune1987,basedinPortalegre

city.

In fact, Clube Aventura, headed by JoséMegre, an ex-Dakar Rally driver, had this event inmind since

1983, but it took him almost four years to materialize the idea, since he had to get the help and

authorization fromthe localauthorities.Dr.MirandaCalha, todayamemberofParliamentand,at that

timeMinisterofSports,wasbehindthisidea.

100carsandmorethan100bikesenteredthefirstBajaPortalegre,atthattimecalledRaliMaratonade

PortalegreandsponsoredbyFinicisa.

Theevent ranona350kmroute longtobedonetwicewithnostops.Heavyrainsandmudmadethe

eventaremarkablechallengeforcarsandbikes.

Thesecondandthirdedition,wereheldonthe followingtwoyears,whereentriesandmudconditions

doubled.Onthememorablefourthedition in1989,therewere250carsand450bikesbutonly10%of

thecompetitorsfinished!Itwasamazing,besidestheconditions!

Sincethefirstyear,manyinternationalriders,eventhebestofthem,whocamefromaroundtheworld

justtojoinPortalegre,representedbikes.FromSergeBacou,ThierryCharbonnier,GillesLalay,Stephane

Peterhansel,DavidCastera,CyrilEsquirol,RichardSainct,AlainPerez,ThierryMagnaldi,andmanyothers

haveparticipatedinthisevent.

Onlyin1995and1996,foreignerridersreachedthepodium,asitwasthecaseofRichardSainctandAlain

Perez.

1987 The1steditionof theeventunder thenameRaliMaratonadePortalegreFinicisa, runwith2lapson350kmitinerary.

1988 2ndeditionwith2lapsona400kmitinerary(800KmFinicisa–Portalegre)

1989 Theeventranonasinglelapof500km,underthename–500kmCervejaSagresPortalegre.

1990 Onthebikes,theracechangedtooneriderperbike.Entriesroseto250carsand450bikesandanidenticalfigureranonthefollowingthreeyears!

1997 11ªBajaGalp500Portalegre–Theeventgetsanewsponsorand,due toheavy rain, itwasshortento200Km.ThemainNationalTVNetwork–SIC,starteda5yearsstrongcoverageofthisevent.

1999 BajaPortadaRavessa500/Portalegre–Anewsponsorenteredagain.TheAdegaCooperativado Redondo, producer of some of the best AlentejoWines (Porta da Ravessa), became themainsponsor.Forthefirsttimethiseventwasranontwospecialstagesforcars.

2001 A 3rd special stage was introduced for cars, to be ran on Sunday morning. The event wascandidateoftheFIACupofBajas.

2002 AsaFIABajaCupevent, the race re-entered theNationalChampionship,asa “Joker”event.NationalTVStationRTPwasgrantedtheexclusiveTVrightsoftheevent.

2003 Porta da Ravessa wine gives way to a new wine: Anta da Serra, from the same company,thereforeitbecamethenameoftheevent.

2004 ColinMcRaeracedhisfirstracewithhisnewNissanPickUp,enteredbyNismo.

2005 201bikesand133carsatthestartandagreatparticipationfromthefactoryteams.VWwithCarlos Sainz (first cross country race), Bruno Saby, Jutta Kleinschmidt andMarkMiller, andMitsubishi,withLucAlphandandHiroshiMasuoka.UndersomeheavyraintheracebetweenSainz,KleinschmidtandAlphandwasagreatone.ThewinnerwastheMitsubishiofAlphand.

2006 211 bikes and 114 cars at the start.Marc Blazquez dominated the race. Between the bikes,MarioPatrãowonandLuisEngeitadowasthefastestofthequads.

2007 Portalegresawforthethirdtime,MiguelBarbosaandMiguelRamalhoclaimvictory.AntónioMaiowinsattheBikes.

2008 144 Bikes and 90 cars at the start. The new brand Pajero Racing Lancer with StephanePeterhanselandJeanPaulCottretwonitsfirstrace.IntheBikerbikesthelocal“hero”AntónioMaiowonagain.

2010 KrysztofHolowczyc(auto)andAntónioMaio(bike)wintheBaja.

2012 AsaFIMBajaWorldCupforthefirsttime,AntónioMaiowinstheraceforthe5thtime.VictoriesforRobertoBorrego(Quads),DavidAlém(UTV),JoãoGuilherme(Buggy)andMiroslavZapletal/MaciekMarton(Auto).

PontedeSorisamunicipalityinPortalegreDistrictinPortugal.Thepopulationin2011was16,722inanareaof839.71km².Thecity'snameisderivedfromthefirstromanbridge,whichwaspartofthe3rdmilitaryroadconnectingLisbon toMerida.Anareaofupheaval inbetweenbordersduring the reconquest,PontedeSor,whichinitiallybelongedto theTemplars,was takenbackby theOrderofSt.Benedict. Its first "ForalCharter"wasbestoweduponitbytheDioceseofÉvorain1161,andlaterratifiedbyD.Manuel.Oncetheromanbridgewasgone,KingJoãoVIhadthebridgethatstandstodaybuiltin1822
