Lead the Way! - Servant of Christ 5K Run/Walk
Join us Rally Day as we raise donations for the Disciple of God Scholarship fund. Bring a friend or family member and enjoy the 5K run/walk on September 15th. It’s going to be a beautiful Sunday morning. What a great way to start the day! The race will begin at 8:00AM in
front of the church prior to the first service
Registered participants will receive a t-shirt and snacks following the run/walk You can register for the run/walk
through the website Eventbrite. Once on the website search for the event Lead The Way!
You can also directly donate to the fundraiser though Michaela Larsen. Fill out an opportunity, make checks out to SOC, write DOGA in the memo line and place your donation in the offering basket.
Don’t want to run or walk but want to help with the race?
Contact Michaela Larsen at [email protected]
We will again be packing Blizzard Bags for Meals on Wheels
What are Blizzard Bags? They are non-perishable bag lunches that will be placed in the homes of Meals on Wheels recipients so when the weather is bad and travel is difficult they still have a complete meal in their home.
The complete meal in a brown paper bag includes: a fruit cup a can of chicken or tuna hot cocoa packets provided (in lieu of milk) granola bars, pudding cups, or small packs of cookies individual packs of crackers, such as plain or cheese or peanut butter
crackers
Please donate any of the above items to the collection box at church until Sept. 8th. Our goal is to have enough donated items to pack 1000 Blizzard Bags.
Rally Day & Football Tailgate Activities Sunday, September 15th
What does RALLY mean? It’s a verb that means "to draw or call together for a common purpose" and it’s a noun meaning
"a renewal of energy in joint action". So, let’s join together and RALLY! September is a great time to call on the Holy Spirit to help
us reenergize our Faith Community at SOC. There will be many opportunities to be a part of and plenty of time to socialize.
We’re looking forward to the day. Mark your calendars and join us! What’s happening on Rally Day?

20/20 VISION: RED LETTER FOCUS ~ Pastor Eric
In one of my Bibles the words of Jesus are printed in Red. It’s a great tool to easily identify the words of Christ. Shortly after Rally Day we will begin preaching through the Gospels of Mark and John with a RED LETTER FOCUS. In other words focusing primarily on what Jesus himself had to say. I’m very excited because we’ll be able to get to many of his greatest teachings and their impact on our lives today. It’s going to be a wonderful Fall as we head into 2020. On another note, please take time to read through the entire newsletter. I think you’ll agree that we are very blessed to be part of a vibrant church. Yes, there are lots of activities and “busyness” but even more important is that they all exist for the purpose of accomplishing our mission which is “Making Disciples”. I hope you’ll take the opportunity to step out of your comfort zone and try something new at church. Perhaps it’s a Bible Study, who knows maybe it’s time to make a phone call to Children’s Ministries Director Anne Larsen or Next Gen Ministries Director Calvin Konop and talk about being a faith guide, maybe it’s serving somehow on Sunday mornings. Imagine what it could be like if everybody asked themselves “what is one way I can serve God at my home church this year?” Yes, Servant of Christ is a wonderful and exciting place to be. Fall is also a great time to reconnect with people at church and recommit to a regular worship life. It can be easy to get out of the wonderful habit of worshipping regularly in the summer because our Minnesota summers are so short. Instead of waiting till late October or November maybe this is the year to start back in early September. Yes, I can’t help but believing that this is gonna be a fantastic year at Servant of Christ! God bless you and I can’t wait to see everyone in worship next Sunday! Pastor Eric
Young At Heart Monday, September 9
Young at Heart will resume this
Fall. Our first gathering will be
Monday, September 9th at 11:30
in the Family Room at the back of
the Sanctuary. The coffee and
discussion will be super-hot. Don’t
forget to bring your lunch. We’ll
begin a Bible study on the book of
Mark in the New Testament.

Worship & Learning
Upcoming Preaching Themes
Sunday, 9/1/19 ~ Guests of Honor Text: Luke 14:1, 7-14
Theme: Jesus shows his grace by inviting unlikely people to the celebration.
Questions to Think About as You Read: What was the last really great party you were invited to? What was the last really great party you hosted? When did you do something kind for someone who could never repay you?
Sunday, 9/8/19 ~ Counting the Cost Text: Luke 14:25-33
Theme: As large crowds are following Jesus he tell them what it might cost to be his followers.
Questions to Think About as You Read: What is something you had to give up to follow Jesus? What is something you would never give up to follow Jesus? How has following Jesus affected your life in big ways and small ways?
Rally Day & Tailgate Sunday Sunday, 9/15/19 ~ “Call and I Will Answer”
Text: Jeremiah 33:1-3
Theme: There is a big difference between simply “going to church” and “being the church”. On Rally Sunday we’ll look at the Jeremiah passage to see how God worked with Jeremiah to lead him into the next chapter of life.
Questions to Think About as You Read: Have you ever spent time worrying or been anxious about something that
never happened? What does trusting God for the next chapter of your life look like? On Rally Day, what are some ways you can “be the church” for someone
else?
Sunday, 9/22/19 ~ Everyone Loves an Underdog Text: Psalm 113:1-9
Theme: God’s emphasis on taking care of the poor is consistent and clear throughout the whole Bible. The scripture passage for today remembers the legacy of God’s help to the poor, and celebrates and praises the God of the needy. Today we are God’s people, God’s hands and feet, and we are called to act on behalf of God for the poor and the needy. This morning we’ll celebrate together our successes, and challenge ourselves to find new ways to serve God by serving the poor.
Things to Think About as You Read: What are some things you know SOC has done to help the poor? God promises for provision go beyond our present time and place. Meeting the needs of the poor extends beyond money. What are some
ways you can meet needs other than giving your money?
Sunday, 9/29/19 ~ Why Do We Rejoice
Text: Luke 10:17-20
Theme: Sometimes we rejoice over the ministry we do in Jesus name, but we should be rejoicing that our names are written in heaven.
Questions to Think About As You Read: What is something really awesome you have been a part of by ministering
in Jesus name? What fills you with joy?

Faith walk & talk
The Red Letters ~ Pastor Melissa
“Then beginning with Moses and all the prophets, Jesus interpreted to them the things about himself
in all the scriptures.” Luke 24:27
Earlier this year I preached on this passage from Luke in a sermon. I
talked about how Jesus is the lens through which we interpret all
scripture. After worship I had a wonderful conversation with a member
about how to interpret scripture and one of the things he said really
touched my heart. He said, “Whenever I get confused or turned around,
I just go back to the Red Letters!”
Many of you may have noticed that in some Bibles the words of Jesus
appear in red print instead of black print. This particular member was
talking about always returning to Jesus words found in the Bible. I think
this is a great idea which is why I am so excited about our theme for the
year – 20/20 Vision: Red Letter Focus.
As we finish up 2019 and enter into 2020 we will be studying the Red
Letters of Jesus! We are returning to the center of our faith and then will
be able to use Jesus words to help us interpret other passages of
scripture!
If you have a Red Letter edition of the Bible please bring it to worship
with you! It will help you to follow along with the readings for the day as
well as the sermon and lead you to more deeply contemplate how Jesus
words can continue to speak to our daily lives.
See you in church on Sunday!
Blessings,
Pastor Melissa

Your Gifts Change LIVES!!
A portion of your gifts to Servant of Christ go to support HOPE4YOUTH. It’s an organization that helps provide pathways to end youth homelessness as we know it.
Because of your gift, young people like Sabrie are fully housed and learning the skills necessary for life-long success. Sabrie said
“Before finding HOPE4YOUTH I was couch
hopping a lot, always afraid I might not have a place to stay at night. It was a very dark time in my life, not knowing
where I would lay may head or if I would have any type of food to eat that day.”
HOPE4YOUTH is based on 4 key concepts; Housing, Outreach, Prevention, and Education/Employment. Your support helps pro-vide basic need resources at the Drop-in Center, to house youth experiencing homelessness at HOPE Place (the transitional hous-ing program), and to teach the skills necessary to ensure life-long success through educational partnerships and the Opening Doors program. Your gifts are doing AMAZING thing in the name of Jesus!!!

Raise A Hallelujah!
I raise a hallelujah in the presence of my enemies I raise a hallelujah louder than the unbelief
I raise a hallelujah my weapon is a melody I raise a hallelujah Heaven comes to fight for me
I’m gonna sing in the middle of the storm Louder and louder you’re gonna hear my praises roar
Up from the ashes hope will arise Death is defeated the King is alive
Raise a Hallelujah is our new prelude song for September. It is a song about the power of worship, the power of music, the power of all us coming together to praise our Heavenly Father. He is the god of unlimited power that speaks in our lives. We are excited for Rally Day! Our traditional and contemporary band members will join together to raise a hallelujah and rejoice in the gifts our Lord gives to us; The gift of community, Bible studies, musical groups, vibrant children and youth programs and “fired up” pastors. We are excited to have several new singers join our contemporary team this year. Please welcome Beth Johnson, Ashley Konop and Tim Hanson.
If you have ever considered trying out for one of the teams, the choir, traditional or contemporary bands, feel free to contact one of the directors. We would love to hear from you. Choir- Susan Huemann [email protected] Traditional Band- Barb Auer [email protected] Contemporary Band- Cathy Yseth [email protected] We are currently looking for young people ages 12-25 to sing or play an instrument with the band. If you love to sing, play an instrument, love to worship and don’t mind being in front of people, this might be a good fit for you. We look forward to talking to you. The tryout dates are: Sunday, Sept. 8 & Sunday, Oct. 6 at noon in the Sanctuary. This will be an exciting year for us at SOC. Let’s raise a hallelujah! Peace, Cathy Yseth

Maybe This Year?
Repeatedly, I am struck by how deeply people are touched by music. How music can communicate in a way nothing else can. How God can use music to bring healing and joy into people’s lives. Maybe this year you would like to participate in this kind of ministry? Maybe this year you want to try something new? Maybe this year you want to experience a sense a belonging to a community? Maybe this year you want to make beautiful music?
Servant of Christ’s Celebration Choir’s first choir rehearsal will be Monday, Sept 9th 6:30 p.m.-8:00 p.m. in the Fellowship hall. Our first Sunday will be on Sept 8th. Our Christmas Concert on December 8th. Please know that you are welcome to join us any and all times. You can contact me in advance or just come! Maybe this year?

Faith Guides Training Middle & High School Volunteers

All volunteers for middle school and high school are asked to come to SOC on Sep 7th from a training from 9am-12pm with Intern Pastor Calvin and Anne Schaefer. We’ll provide breakfast and beverages for folks, as well as a robust training. We’ll cover all of the changes to the program, the details you need to know, and we’ll have plenty of time for group discussion. See you then!
Hey families of High Schoolers,
We have an exciting change coming up in Next Gen Ministries this coming year. We’ll be inviting 9th graders to join the High School Ministry in January of 2020. The Confirmation ministry is moving to 6th-8th, so the High School will cover 4 different grades. We’re excited for this shift for lots of reasons, but the two big ones are 1) that the change mirrors what CPHS and surrounding districts are already doing, and 2) this will help increase our High School numbers significantly this year.
A lot of the feedback that Servant of Christ gets as a church is that we are a welcoming church. Many families come because they are invited, and continue to come because they have felt so welcomed by others in the congregation. I know that the High School ministry is capable of the same hospitality, and I am excited to see how the upperclassmen will encourage and mentor the younger students.
If you have any questions about what this change is all about or how it will work, contact Intern Pastor Calvin or Anne Schaefer!
High School Kickoff - Wednesday, September 11th
7:30-8:30 pm
10th-12th graders are invited to join us from 7:30-8:30 on the 11th for a High School Kickoff! We’re excited to start the new year of ministry, and we didn’t want to wait until mid September to do it. Invite your friends to join us as we kick off a new year with a party, devos, games, and treats. See you then!

We look forward to seeing everyone! If you have any questions or are interested in more information regarding our program please contact Diane Poling at [email protected] or 763-427-7765.

Disciple of God Award Recipient Thank you Thank you so much to the Servant of Christ congregation for your help and support with my Disciple of God Award service project. With your generous donations, I was able to assemble fifteen blankets with kids from the Osseo school district to donate to the Gillette Children’s Hospital. The students really enjoyed crafting the blankets and felt happy doing this for a good cause. Thank you for your prayers and well wishes as I begin my junior/senior year at UW-River Falls.
