RAINFORESTS : HOW LONG BEFORE THEY’RE
GONE ?
RAINFORESTS• What are
Rainforests?• Where are they
found?• What animal life
is found there ?• Why are they
important to us?
RAINFORESTS :WHAT ARE THEY ?
They are forests that make up about half of the Earth's total forested area .
RAINFORESTS:How they look
Three layers :
* The upper canopy
level * Middle layer, * The forest
floor
RAINFORESTS :WHERE ARE THEY
FOUND?
Amazon( Brazil ) Central
America, Central Africa South East Asia Western coast ( India) Queensland
( Australia)
RAINFORESTS : ANIMAL LIFE
*Birds and reptiles occur in each of the forest layers.
*Bats, flying foxes, tree frogs , sun bears, orang-utans, tigers, jaguars, tapirs, pigs, and many species of rodent.
RAINFORESTS :Why are they important to
us?
More plant and animal species than any region.
Most productive ecosystems in the world.
Sixty % of plants on Earth,
90 % primates, 40 % bird species, and 80 % insects.
RAINFORESTS: PROBLEM ?
Logging Agriculture Plantation
Agriculture Hydroelectric
Power(Dams) Mining
RAINFORESTS: SLOWLY DYING ?
1960-1990 one fifth of tropical forest lost
1980-1990, 38 million acres lost.
1990-1995 ,34 million acres lost
RAINFORESTS: What can we do?
Stop cutting trees Plant trees that are
endemic (native) Control pollution Don’t over-harvest
(take too much ) Protect remaining
ecosystems
RAINFORESTS: CONCLUSION
Rainforests are disappearing faster than we think
Humans are responsible for forest loss
We will lose all our rainforests if we do not do something
