INTRODUCTION

I wanted to find out about rainforest animals, my project has facts about the rainforest animals that interested me the most.

SULFUR BUTTERFLYDID YOU KNOW…?

• They have bright yellow wings, but sometimes orange.

• Also they drink the tears from turtles and reptiles, they drink the eye fluid because they want the salt from them.

• They go in groups around muddy puddles, called mud puddling. They drink the water and suck the mud to find salt.

• They live in the Emergent layer.

COATIMUNDIDID YOU KNOW…?

• There are four different kinds of coati’s and they are the ring tailed, mountain coati, white nosed coati and the Cozumel island coati.

• A coati can be called different names like a coatimundi, Brazilian aardvark, Mexican tej’on, cholugo, moncun and a hog nosed coon.

• A coati’s nose looks like a pig’s because it spins round in a circle.

• It lives in the Understory and it eats plants and animals during night, but also it eats other food which is fruits nuts seeds insects birds eggs rats and reptiles such as lizards and snakes.

ALPACA ANTEATERDID YOU KNOW…?

• The giant anteater is also known as the ant bear. They are nocturnal and sleep for 15 hours a day.

• They have no teeth so they use their sticky tongue to pick up insects. Their tongue is 60 centimetres long.

• They have a bad sight and hearing.

• They walk on their knuckles to protect their claws.

• They dig a hole in the ground to sleep in, on the forest floor.

KINKAJOUDID YOU KNOW…?

• They can turn their feet backwards to run easily in any direction along tree branches or up and down trunks.

• They can sometimes be called honey bears because they steal honey from bee hives.

• Their tail is usually 12 to 55cm long.

• Most of the food it eats is figs, melons, mangoes, apples and bananas.

• It lives in the canopy layer.

ARMY ANTDID YOU KNOW…?

• Army ants are blind and can’t see their prey if it stays still.

• A famous researcher called E.O. Wilson once saw more than 200 different types of ants in one tree.

• There are more ants than any other animal in the rainforest.

• If you weighed all the ants in the rainforest together they would be the heaviest group of animals in the rainforest.

• They live on the forest floor instead of nests.

AMAZON STINGRAYDID YOU KNOW…?

• A pancake sting ray looks like a huge pancake.

• And it doesn’t sting with its tail.

• It lives in fresh water in the Amazon river.

• They are under water flyers.

• It was only discovered in 2011.

• A large group of stingrays is called a fever.

• They are related to sharks.

FLYING SQUIRRELDID YOU KNOW…?

• A flying squirrel glides through the air and it uses it’s skin flaps to glide. Their flaps look like wings.

• They like to eat different kind of food: slugs, snails, mice, eggs, small birds, mushroom, berries, seed, nuts, tree bark, flowers.

• They have big eyes to see at night.

• It lives In the canopy.

OCELOTDID YOU KNOW…?

• They swallow their food whole.

• They eat rabbits, rats, iguanas, fish and frogs.

• Female Ocelots have two or three darkly coloured kittens.

• They can do a killing bite.

• Their sharp back teeth can tear food like scissors.

• They can swim really well.

• They live on the forest floor.

RUBY THROATED HUMMINGBIRDDID YOU KNOW…?

• The ruby throated humming birds have very short legs so they don’t like to walk or hop.  

• They don’t eat meat they only really eat plants, but sometimes insects or spiders. They drink nectar from plants.

• They hover and can fly upside down and backwards.

• An adult ruby throated can eat more than it’s own body weight.

• It lives in the emergent layer.

QUETZALDID YOU KNOW…?

• During mating season father quetzals grow twin tailed feathers.

• A male has long tail feathers up to a metre long.

• It lives near the canopy layer and it can’t fly very well so it prefers to hop from one branch to another.

• It digs a nest in rotting trees or branches or sometimes woodpeckers old nests.

HARPY EAGLEDID YOU KNOW…?

• They are endangered.

• They are also known as the ruler of the forest.

• They are the heaviest of all birds.

• Harpy eagles have almost disappeared from central America.

• They live in the emergent layer.

CONCLUSION

The rainforest is important for the animals because they might live in one of the trees that have been cut down.

Also it is important for us humans because if we didn’t have the trees in the rainforest we wouldn’t be able to breath.

The trees are the animals home. We must keep the rainforests. Every hour an area the size of a football pitch is being chopped down. It means we lose the trees that help us breath. The animals in this Powerpoint lose their home. We need to help the animals by not cutting down any trees.
