  • Tropical rainforests are located in the states of Chiapas , Quintana Roo , Yucatan , Campeche , Tabasco and Oaxaca . These include low jungles of evergreen broadleaf vegetation and tall deciduous forests combined with palms, mangroves and marshes. Yucatan also supports tropical savannah with thick grasses interspersed with evergreen trees and shrubs.

  • Because of the lack of seasonal differences, due to the geographical location of the forests, and the high humidity level the vegetation is luxuriant here. The recurring features of rainforests are basically the following:

    High animal and vegetal biodiversity

    Evergreen trees

Dark and sparse undergrowth interspersed with clearings

Scanty litter (organic matter settling on the ground)

Presence of "strangler" creepers (e.g. Ficus spp.)

Presence of buttresses (i.e. large winged ribs at the base of trunks) and spindly roots in trees living in often-flooded areas.

  • Perhaps the richest flora and faunaenvironment is the rainforest, because itpresents favorable conditions for adaptationand survival of many species. Talking aboutvegetation, ferns, plants with big leaves andmedium shrubs can be found there. Some ofthe most featured trees are the mahoganyand rubber tree; theres also cacao, rosewood, sapote, orchids and vines. In someparts of the rainforest the treetops are sothick that they block the passage of sunlight.

  • The rainforests of Mexico and Central America have a wide variety of animal life, including boas, coral snakes, and the deadly pit viper, called the fer-de-lance. There are spiders, scorpions, bats, and stinging insects, including wasps. The world's largest spotted cat, the jaguar, was hunted by the ancient Maya. Its fur was prized and stood for power.

Also in the area are jaguars, small deer, ocelots and pumas. The area is rich with spider monkeys and birds including parrots, golden turkeys, hawks and hummingbirds.

  • The gentle mammal, the White tail Deer (Odocoileus virginianus) can be seen in the area. The Ceh as commonly called by the locals are can be seen commonly at dawn and at twilight wherein they roaming around or resting on bushes, shrubs or places where there are water spots.

  • Jaguars are found in Mexico, Central and South America. Jaguars will eat a variety of animals including turtles, tapirs and deer. Jaguars can be found in rainforests, deserts and grasslands. It is and endangered animal.

  • An ant eater called the Northern tamandua(Tamandua Mexicana) can also be spotted. It can grow upto5 feet and can weigh more than 8 pounds. This animal has long snout with no teeth. The Northern tamandua is a nocturnal mammal that has light yellow graying white fur, long tail and big claws which helps them go branch to branch in search of termites, insects and ants for food.

  • Termites and fungi are some of the decomposers that live in the Tropical Rain Forest.

Some examples of detritivores are earthworms.

  • The king vulture is one of the larger species of vulture. It can grow to be 32 inches long. Unlike other vultures, which are dark in color, king vultures are creamy white, with darker tail-features. The feathers around their heads and necks are blue, red, orange and yellow. The skin drooping over their beak, called a wattle, is a bright red-orange. Their beak is thick and strong, great for shredding flesh, and their long thick claws are good for keeping a tight grip on their dinner. These large birds live in the uppermost branches of emergent canopy trees anywhere from Mexico to central Argentina and Trinidad.

  • An average of 50 to 260 inches (125 to 660 cm.) of rain falls yearly.

Rain forests belong to the tropical wet climate group. The temperature in a rain forest rarely gets higher than 93 F (34 C) or drops below 68 F (20 C); average humidity is between 77 and 88%; rainfall is often more than 100 inches a year. There is usually a brief season of less rain. In monsoonal areas, there is a real dry season.
