Welcome to our 19th annual bull sale. I believe we are offering the best and most uniform set of bulls we have ever raised. We are very happy to have Ralph and Liz Ret-zlaff , Saddleridge Charolais joining us again this year. This offering includes both yearling and 2 year old bulls. Our 2 year old bulls are bulls we purposely kept back from last year. They are calves that were born after the first of March and backgrounded lightly through the winter, then put out on native grass from May until the end of October. So if you are looking for bulls that you can run with a few more cows take a look at these guys. They are big and powerful. For the third year we will have Charolais bulls on offer. They may not be high in numbers but I am sure you will be impressed with the quality. All the bulls will be earnotch tested for BVD again this year. If you read Dr. Rob Stables notes on this disease I think you will understand how important it is to buy bulls that have tested negative for this disease. I would also urge everyone to go to the Simmental or Charolais websites and look up any of the bulls on offer to obtain more information on them. Both these associations have valuable tools for the cattleman to take advantage of. We truly appreciate Bouchard Livestock involvement with us again this year. Brian has been through the bulls and can offer you professional advice whether it be order buying or just an honest opinion on any of the bulls so please don’t hesitate to call him. He has been involved with us for many years so he knows the cowherd and can give you solid advice. We are also using DLMS this year. If you cannot make the sale please register and take advantage of this service. We will offer free delivery within a 150 mile radius and then at cost after that. Again this year we will offer $70 off the purchase price if you take your bull home from the sale. Otherwise year-ling bulls will be delivered sometime after the 1st of April and the 2 year olds as soon as possible after the sale. I am once again happy to be a part of the Rainalta sale and would like to thank Bill and Janice for the opportu-nity. I’m confident that the bulls that we bring to town will work for you. Our yearling bulls are fed for optimal growth. They get a mix of silage, hay, concentrate and a little barley. This year our offering includes a couple 2 year old bulls. One of these bulls we used as a cleanup bull on our pure-bred herd and the other was too young to get into last year’s sale. Our 2 year old bulls have only been fed silage and hay since they came off the grass in fall. Feel free to stop by and check out our bulls or give me a call if you have any questions.

Should a problem occur barring physical injury or mismanagement, a bull of equal value will be provided or a credit will be issued towards the purchase of another bull. Bull Development & Delivery$70 will be taken off purchase price if bulls are picked up from the sale, otherwise Simmentals and Charolais yearlings will be delivered after April 1, 2013. Two year olds will be delivered as soon as possible after the sale.

Terms & ConditionsCattle will sell under the standard Canadian Simmental Associa-tion sale terms and conditions. These are available on request.

Health & FertilityAll bulls will have a scrotal measurement and a vet examination done prior to the sale. All bulls over 12 months of age will also be semen tested. These bulls will be delivered once a semn test has been passed. All bulls have been treated with Ivomec and have current vaccinations. Contact the breeder for specific herd health programs.

Sight Unseen Purchase ProgramIf you are unable to attend the sale but are interested in bulls, give the consignors or Brian Bouchard a call and they will per-sonally go over the bulls and your program and recommend bulls that would meet your needs. We will represent your needs in a professional and confidential manner.

EPD ExplanationEPD’s are “Expected Progeny Differences”. They are a useful tool in selection. EPD’s incorporate the individual animal with is av-eraged ancestry performance. EPD’s do not compare across cat-tle breeds, they are individually based per breed. EPD’s indicate a probable variance above or below breed average for that trait for a given bull’s progeny. Use them for guidance in the direction you want your herd to go.

BVD TestingBuying bulls that are tested negative and vaccinated against BVD as calves and pre-breeding is the best way to avoid bringing BVD into your herd with your herdsire purchases. All the Simmental & Charolais bulls in this sale have been ear-notch tested negative for BVD.

In 2011 we purchased three of the top cows in Stauffers Charolais herd dispersal They were all bred to Shelco Made Easy. This was the only bull calf of the three but they are all great calves and the moth-ers have been wonderful to deal with. Miss Madison 34T is a medium framed Freedom daughter with a picture perfect udder. The more I see of the Freedom daughters the more I like them.

Bovine Viral Darrhea, or BVD, is an important disease in cattle. The prevalence of incidence of the disease is relatively low, but if you happen to have it in your herd it can lead to a host of problems. BVD is a complicated disease that can show up as stillbirths or deformed calves, late-term abortions, early embryonic death (early pregnancies are resorbed), Persistently Infected animals (PI animals), or inceased incidence of other diseases such as scours, or pneumonia outbreaks that are difficult to resolve. The major reservoir of virus is the Persistently Infected animal. This animal was infected by the virus between 50 and 150 days of gestation. The immune system believes that the virus is a normal part of the body so it is infected for life, in fact, every cell in the animal’s body becomes a virus factory, releasing large amounts of virus into the environment (such as water bowls, feed troughs, etc). Over 50% of PI animals die by 12 to 18 months of age, and probably 90% are dead by 24 months. The PI animal that sheds millions of virus particles daily is a threat to herd mates because the virus suppresses the immune system making them more susceptible to other diseases. This is where the greatest economic losses occur. Vaccination against BVD will not eradicate it from your herd if it is present (vaccine has no effect on the PI animal), but will help to minimize some of the effects. Taking ear notch samples and testing for BVD is the only way to prove an animal is not a PI. Testing and vaccination work together. Buying bulls that are tested PI negative and vaccinated against BVD as calves and pre-breeding is the best way to avoid bringing BVD in with your herdsire purchases. All the Simmental bulls in this sale have been ear-notch tested negative for BVD.
