Palm 18 is a dog-leg left. When you stand on the tee-box,youcan’tseethegreen.Ontheleftoftheteebox,acrossthecartpath,is an island which is overgrownwith lush vegetation and trees. InthatjungleliesabrandnewHonmadriver which accidentally flew offone of our member’s hands as hewasteeingoffyearsago.

Landing your tee shot near thebend of the dog-leg puts you ona relatively flat surface so thatyou don’t have to contend with atroublesome downhill lie on yoursecond shot. But even if you getyour ball to the bend in one shot,thesecondshotrepresentsanotherchallenge.Itisagood145metrestothegreen,whichslopesdowntothereservoirontheright.

If you play your second shot toofar left, you will find your ball in agreensidebunker–ithugsthefrontleftsideofthegreenandisasandyreceptacle for any pulled shots.Meanwhile, ifyousliceyoursecondshot, you may hear muted criesof “Watanabe” from your playingpartners as the ball is certainlydestinedtolandinthereservoir.

RafflesCountryClubholdsalotofgood memories for many people.Last year, we commemorated our20thyearwithacoffeetablebook.It charted the development of theClubfromthetimetheplantobuilditwasfirstmootedbyJurongTownCorporation (now JTC Corp) in1984.Manyofthepioneermembersremember those early days well. The area where the Lake Coursewould be was a flat, narrow pieceof barren land adjacent to JalanAhmad Ibrahim. It was inundatedwith swamps, small trees andsome wildlife. The land where thePalm Course would be built hada small hillock in one corner anda large variety of trees, includinga smattering of fruit trees. But thelandscape was mostly stark, withthe hills surrounding the SAFTIMilitary Institute on the horizon, includingtheinfamous“Pengkang”Hill, and the tiny Sungei Tengahmeandering its way through themarshlands. In those days, Tuas was quietlydeveloping as an industrial estate. Many years before that, it wasswamplandwhichwaslaterclearedfor squatter settlement. This, inturn, became a fishing village anditwasnotunusual toseeasmanyas200fishingboats inTuasevery
morning.Inthe1970s,theresidentsof Tuas were resettled in publichousing estates and Tuas begantobedeveloped for industrial use.Landwasreclaimedtoexpandtheindustrial area. By the time, RCCopened in 1988, about 6.5 squarekilometersoflandwassaidtohavebeenreclaimed.
The Club added much-neededcolourandvivacitytoanotherwisedrab industrial area in the west ofSingapore.Therewasagolfcourseboom at the time and it was anexciting time to start a new club.In the mid-1980s, membershipsin golf clubs were viewed as aninvestment. Many golf clubs werebeing built in Johor, Batam andBintan. Such was the popularitythat there were close to 4,500applications for membership atRCC. It was decided that about2,500 memberships would bemade available and selection wasdonebyballoting.
But this brought about anunexpected situation for the Club. The balloting resulted in manynon-golfers and non-members ofclubs becoming club membersfor the first time. An educationprogramme was needed and thisincluded a workshop on golf rulesand etiquette. There was a lot ofhardworkinthoseearlydaystogetmanyofthenewmembersreadytoplayonaproper18-holecourse.
Since then, RCC has kept itsmembership numbers steadyaround the 2,500 mark. Many ofour pioneer members still play onthe course on a regular basis. Ithas become like a second hometosome.Inacountrywherethingschange very quickly, having aconstant inour lives likeRCC isagreatcomfort.
