Here we are again at the end of yet another year. It is time once again for another cohort of students to graduate and begin the greatest adventure of them all – their careers. With this passage of rites in a way, they are now ready for the next stage of their lives; they are now on the Edge of something new and exciting.

Tonight is the chance for this graduating cohort to finally reveal new directions, to generate new ideas, to cause sensations, to honour imagination and create something that is unparalleled. These young individuals, over the course of the last six months, have been working endlessly on their final projects which will be presented this evening; what infinite possibilities, resources and ideas shall we witness? They seem endless at this moment; they are already envisioning the next journey on a new road that has started at Raffles College of Higher Education and will continue towards a bright new future.

As Principal of Raffles College of Higher Education, I am especially privileged to present “Edge”, our graduation exhibition and fashion showcase. This evening is to honour these graduating students who dared to dream, who took risks in developing innovative concepts and ideas and realising them into amazing pieces of works. There have always been those of us that are constantly determined to push the boundaries of innovation and creativity, though it may at times be so eccentric and bizarre and always thought-provoking. They are the ones who will continue to build upon the legacy and vision that constantly tries to redefine the way we look at fashion today, and for the future, the graduating cohort of the Fashion Design and the Fashion Marketing Department.

Love is the target of many people, sex is the physical, born-desire, while betrayal is the undesirable factor. These things may be independent and not connected but they seem to happen simultaneously in each relationship. Depending on the affection and the awareness of each person, these three elements could break up the relationship or make it more stable as in some moment; they know who they love by comparing the love and the betrayal.

This collection is inspired by the 17th century epic poem, “Paradise Lost by John Milton”. It stated the beginning of darkness, where Lucifer became the king of the world and still has a reign over it. Where there is opulence, there is always a coming of decadence. Since the beginning of human history, it’s always been pride that leads to one’s fall, whether it is an individual, or a great empire, or an economic system, society, or country. The concept behind the designs is to capture the indulgence in worldly opulence in relation to the decadence of humanity.

Flamenco exploded on the dance floor like a flower blossom.

The Harder They Fall

Inspired primarily by Edgar Allan Poe’s Masque of the Red Death, this collection reflects how worldly wealth and power are no defences against the ravages of age and disease. In the face of death, the rich and mighty may, perhaps, have even more to lose. My use of muted colours in silks and jacquards harken to an age of fading aristocratic opulence - a dreary reminder that the taller we stand, the harder we may fall.

Origami

The traditional Japanese art of paper folding, which started in the 17th century and was popularised outside of Japan in the mid-1900s, inspired this collection. My design uses this form of paper folding in fabrics. This method makes clothes look stronger, and the women who wear them look modern and powerful.

My collection was inspired by Insects. I was very fascinated by their torsos or exoskeleton bodies, the shape and colour as well as the multiple layers that formed the wings. My inspiration comes from the ancient Egyptian art of mummification. Mummification is the preservation of a body, either animal or human that has undergone a process to stop the decay that comes with death. We can see through the many tombs of the Egyptians how this was part of their very existence. I used black and gold stripes to wrap and create bandages around the garments.

Funky Funeral

The idea of this collection comes from a song called “Dumb Ways to Die”. This song is a campaign by Metro Trains in Australia. It made me think that death is not scary; it can be funny because in the end, everyone will die. So, think positive and face the ugly truth. Death is not as terrible as people think. If this is the last time to say good-bye to someone that you love, instead of being sad, why not make this last event happy?

The Daylight Dreamers

It is about going down memory lane, reliving moments from the past. Reminiscing the time you got your very first box of crayons and went crazy with it, taking walls as your coloring canvas. The thought of how you took a white sheet your mom gave you, tied it as a cape and pretended to be a superhero, running and flying about, still tickles you. The collection represents the innocence, curiosity and wild imagination a kid bears, things that we have forgotten growing up.

My inspiration comes from silence. Grey is protection, sophistication, freedom, strength and attentiveness to simplicity.

An unimaginable concoction of art and fashion fusing the East and the West ignited at the solo exhibition by Spanish artist Lita Cabellut, where Raffles Singapore Principal Giuseppe (Joe) Spinelli also had a hand in.

It was a first-of-its-kind collaboration in which Joe designed eight fashion pieces using fabrics hand painted by Lita. The finished outfits were showcased alongside Lita’s Dried Tear exhibition in Opera Gallery at Ion Orchard from 18 October to 3 November 2013. Raffles Singapore also roped in its students to design the window display for the launch event on 17 October 2013. Prior to the launch, both Lita and Joe have never met each other.

“We were working in two different parts of the world. When I first saw the fabric designs that Lita drew, I spent some time thinking what I should do, because what I had in mind previously didn’t work after I saw the actual fabrics,” Joe recalled. “This is one of the most interesting projects I have ever worked on in so many years.”

Neither has Lita seen the garments until she arrived in Singapore for her solo exhibition. Her paintings drew influence from the famed Japanese Geishas.

Lo and behold! Your art, my style

“It was a marvellous collaboration! And a challenging one as it was my first time starting something and letting my partner (referring to Joe) complete the rest of it,” shared Lita.

The alliance showcased the principal’s ingenuity and superior craftsmanship and was certainly a wonderful experience for Raffles Singapore. Most importantly, it was a great platform to showcase Raffles’ proficiency in design and creativity that has seen the college nurture so many home-grown fashion designers in Singapore over the last 23 years. For Raffles students, Joe’s creations were a great deal inspiring as they witnessed for themselves the superior ingenuity and craftsmanship from the master Raffles Designer himself.

Impressed with what Joe had created using her art, Lita said, “We admire each other’s work so much that we are already exploring new collaborative opportunities!”

Their efforts have paid off. Fashion Marketing students from Raffles Singapore savoured success with “India Within: A Fashion Mantra”, a charity runway show produced entirely by them. Not only did they receive overwhelming praises from the audience, they were also noticed by TV viewers with the exclusive broadcast of the fashion show on Vasantham, an Indian language channel dedicated to the vast Indian community in Singapore.

Adding more ‘Raffles’ flavour to the fashion show was the presentation of the beautiful collection by Raffles graduate Siddharth Shashankan. The alumnus is another Raffles success story. Graduated in 2007, Siddharth is now a successful fashion designer with his own label, Hangar.

“I am really happy to be invited to play my part as a Raffles alumnus for the charity fashion show produced by Raffles Singapore. The inspiration for my collection came mainly from comics and super heroes. There are a lot of bright colours being used in this collection,” shared Siddharth.

A number of entertaining performances were planned to accompany the Indian theme. Bhangra performers wowed with their upbeat moves and stunts. A snake charmer intrigued the crowd with his skill to control the imposing scaly creature. Unsurprisingly, the snake became instantaneously popular with many people waiting to take a picture with it.

A lucky draw was also held in which a number of lucky people walked away with attractive prices. To top it all off, goodie bags sponsored by Victoria Secret, New look, Lomography, Pedro, Radpopsicles, Glaciers accessories, Glamareus, Yoga Sandals Singapore and Nylon magazine were given to the audience in appreciation of their support for the fashion show.

Towards the end, Raffles students who organised the spectacular show received thunderous applause for their efforts. Raffles graduate Siddharth also earned many commendations for his outstanding fashion collection.

A fashion show like this provides students with the opportunity to showcase their talents before embarking on the next stage of their career development.

The winning mooncake box designs by two students from Raffles Singapore at last year’s “Design a Mooncake Box” competition have been commercialised for this year’s Mid-Autumn Festival.

Graphic Design students Joanne Lee May Teng and Sherlivia Kurniawan won the First Prize and Third Prize respectively at the competition organised by Design Packaging Concept Pte Ltd.

Peach Garden, a popular local restaurant chain, adopted Joanne’s design, which was inspired by a traditional Chinese wooden door. Opening the box gives one the feeling of walking through a door that leads to a joyous celebration of the Mid-Autumn Festival. Beneath the traditional idea that sparked off the design concept, trendy and cool festive colours of hot pink and turquoise are used to accompany the modern illustrations on the box. To top it all off, the box is light, eco-friendly and inexpensive to produce.

Sherlivia’s design concept of a Chinese lantern resonated with Baker’s Oven. The box could hold four mooncakes. Interestingly, the four slots can be removed to become either a working lantern or a container to store trinkets. The design is not only attractive but also versatile in its use.

This year, Raffles Singapore was invited again to participate in the competition with 22 designs. Through online voting on Facebook, four Graphic Design students - Lau Yi Jun, Clarissa Sulaeman, Kelly and Riyan Adiputra Limindra – emerged as the Grand Finalists. They would be pitting against participants from other design schools in Singapore for the grand awards.

Next year’s Mid-Autumn Festival may see mooncake packaging by Raffles Singapore students again!

Raffles Singapore and Heinz team up to create paintings beyond one’s imagination

Raffles Singapore embarked on an exclusive collaboration with Heinz to create paintings using a unique ink - ketchup.

After a pre-selection process, the “Heinz Ketchup Art Challenge” rounded up four teams of Visual Communication students from Raffles Singapore to express their creativity through drawings using Heinz ketchup.

Held at Raffles Singapore on 2 August 2013, the four teams got down to work on their paintings while other Raffles students and staff also joined in to make their own masterpiece on canvas using, of course, ketchup.

To hype up the atmosphere, a music performance and a ketchup muffin baking demonstration were also organised.

The artworks of the competing teams were uploaded on Heinz Singapore’s facebook to call for votes until 9 August. The winning team with the most number of votes would receive cash amount equivalent to the number of votes collected, up to a maximum of $1000.

The painting titled “Grown Not Made” by sisters Carolyn and Stefany won the competition with 311 votes.

“We based our artwork on the history of Heinz. Through our research, we found that Heinz has a very long history. Hence, we decided to work on the growth concept of Heinz. It has been a great experience,” shared Carolyn, who majors in Graphic Design.

Raven Khaw from another team, who also majors in Graphic Design, said, “I have never tried painting with ketchup. I felt a strong sense of achievement when I completed the painting with my team member. I am happy and satisfied.”
