GRADUATE AUDITION REQUIREMENTS FOR SPRING AND FALL 2019

Graduate Programs The University of Redlands offers:

• Master of Music in Composition • Master of Music in Conducting – Orchestral, Wind, Choral • Master of Music in Performance • Master of Music in Vocal Chamber Music • Artist Diploma (post-Masters)

School of Music Applications https://casgrad.redlands.edu/apply/ School of Music Audition Dates for 2019 We offer a spring start for Performance, Composition, and the Artist Diploma. There is no formal audition date for spring applicants, so we will work with each applicant to schedule an ad hoc audition. To schedule an audition contact the Director of Music Admissions at [email protected]. Composition: Score submission only, no audition required Conducting: By invitation only, based on pre-screening video Performance & Artist Diploma dates for fall 2019: January 26th, 2019 February 2nd, 2019 February 16th, 2019 Vocal Chamber Music: Pre-screening deadline is December 1. Live audition on February 20, 2019. Recorded Auditions – Performance and Artist Diploma only If you cannot attend a live audition we will accept a video audition.

• Uploaded videos should include an introduction and a brief discussion of your performing experience • Before beginning your performance, please introduce the title of your piece(s) and the name of the

composer Accompanists

• Instrumental auditions, live and recorded, should be unaccompanied. • The School of Music will provide an accompanist for on campus voice auditions. • Please note: rehearsal time is not provided with the accompanist. You will have opportunity to discuss the

score (i.e. tempo markings, time changes) prior to the audition. • Applicants must send a copy of their music at least two weeks in advance for the School of Music

accompanist. Practice Rooms A practice room will be provided for 15-20 minutes prior to an on-campus audition. Contact the Director of Music Admissions at [email protected] or (909) 748-8014 with any questions.

Graduate Audition Requirements

Classical Instrumental

• 3 complete solo pieces including a major work or concerto Semi-formal or concert attire is required.

Classical Percussion

• A substantial, non-original, solo on EACH of the following 3 instruments: § Snare Drum, Keyboard Percussion, Timpani

A list of recommended books for each instrument is available by request. Contact [email protected]

Classical Voice • 4 art songs, oratorio or arias, with one selection in: English, French, German, and Italian

All pieces must be performed from memory Semi-formal or concert attire is required An accompanist will be provided. Music must be submitted at least two weeks in advance.

Jazz Instrumental (guitar, bass, piano)

• 1 standard song or jazz piece • 1 jazz standard with improvised solo

Music minus one accompaniment is acceptable. A rhythm section is not provided; however, a Redlands faculty member may serve as a duo partner.

Jazz Drumset Demonstrate rhythmic and “groove” competency in the following musical styles:

• 4/4 swing at a variety of tempi, Shuffle, Funk/Hip Hop/Rock styles at a variety of tempi • Samba, Bossa Nova, Mambo, Songo, etc., and Afro-Cuban 6/8

Candidates will be expected to “Trade Fours” in each of the above styles and solo on a Jazz "Standard"

Graduate Composition • 3 or more original classical scores written within the last two years • A statement of your interest and background in composition

Graduate Conducting

• Pre-screening: 30-minute video of recent rehearsals and performances, resume, repertoire list • Live audition – By invitation only:

§ 1 hour conducting audition § Instrumental or vocal audition as described above § Theory & sight singing exams

Vocal Chamber Music

• Pre-screening – December 1 deadline: § 4 contrasting pieces, in 4 different languages, representing operatic and song repertoire

• Live audition – February 20, 2019, by invitation only: § Solo audition

§ 1 opera aria, 1 oratorio aria, 1 lied § An accompanist will be provided. Music for accompanist due by February 1.

§ Chamber audition § 2 choral works to be chosen by faculty panel. These works are NOT to be memorized. § 1 choral work to be provided on audition day for sight-reading
