Carrier Ethernet services are experiencing astounding growth. Industry analysts predict that worldwide revenues for WAN Ethernet Services will exceed the $40 billion mark by 2015, reflecting a compound annual growth rate of about 15% from 2010. The acceptance of Carrier Ethernet is truly universal, driven by enterprise demand for higher capacity, flexible bandwidth, lower cost-per-Megabit services, and networking simplicity. The industry as a whole has responded by engineering Carrier Ethernet to support differentiated services with high availability and reliability, validated by accurate performance monitoring and measurable SLAs.

As competition to provide managed Carrier Ethernet services increases, operators must find ways to differentiate their offering, avoiding service commoditization and inevitable price erosion. This can only be done by ensuring optimum quality of experience for every service application regardless of the customers’ location and the underlying access infrastructure.

RAD Data Communications is a leading vendor of industry-standard Carrier Ethernet demarcation devices and aggregation equipment for both the access network and the provider edge. RAD’s intelligent EtherAccess® product portfolio supports a wealth of tools for sophisticated service delivery, traffic management and performance measurement. These significantly reduce service provisioning time, ensure high availability and resilience, and provide end-to-end Quality of Service for SLA assurance. Using RAD’s EtherAccess product portfolio, service providers and transport operators can quickly roll out MEF-certified E-Line and E-LAN services for business and wholesale connectivity as well as for mobile backhaul applications.

Service Turn-up

Fault Managment & Recovery

On-going Monitoring

Addressing Carrier Ethernet Service Challenges* Service Reach Connecting multiple customer sites out-of-region while providing end-to-end QoS and uniform customer service attributes is critical regardless of the physical infrastructure or the off-net service providers’ own network SLA parameters. RAD addresses this by supporting Carrier Ethernet over fiber, DSL, PDH, SDH/SONET, and wireless with uniform service characteristics and end-to-end SLA assurance.

* Service Resiliency Industry efforts by vendors and service providers alike have resulted in standards-based linear and ring protection schemes to enable Carrier Ethernet to replace SDH/SONET and ATM for reliability and resiliency as a carrier-class transport technology. RAD’s demarcation and aggregation devices support 802.3ad link aggregation protection, G.8031 Ethernet Linear Protection (EVC protection) and G.8032 Ethernet Ring Protection Switching for under 50 ms detection and recovery of physical and virtual circuit disruptions.

* Timing over Packet Even a highly engineered Carrier Ethernet network requires robust synchronization mechanisms if it is to handle real-time voice and video applications efficiently and avoid the service disruptions caused by packet delay, delay variation and frame loss. This is especially critical when using Carrier Ethernet to transport mobile traffic where impaired handoffs can lead to dropped calls. RAD’s SyncToP platform of high performance clock recovery and distribution techniques feature IEEE 1588v2 PTP, Synchronous Ethernet, NTR over SHDSL and adaptive clock recovery (ACR), and are incorporated in the company’s mobile demarcation devices and aggregation-site gateways.

* Migration of Legacy Services Widespread deployment of packet-switched backbone networks and the roll out of Carrier Ethernet services have led to the decommissioning or downsizing of traditional PDH, SDH/SONET and ATM networks in many parts of the world. Nevertheless, there is a massive footprint of legacy equipment in operation and service providers must find ways to maintain their existing customer base and also extract the highest value from their own legacy networks as they transition to lower cost all-packet solutions. RAD’s Carrier Ethernet devices support TDM pseudowire tunneling, facilitating a smooth transition to new networks while preserving equipment and infrastructure investments for as long as it is economically feasible.

* Robust Service Management Effective management of the service lifecycle is a critical issue for operators since delays in Carrier Ethernet deployment and provisioning could result in customer dissatisfaction, as well as lost revenues or unnecessary truck rolls contributing to higher than anticipated OpEx. RAD’s EtherAccess product suite supports the full composite of service lifecycle management tools, including RFC 2544 throughput testing and Ethernet OAM, minimizing service turn up and performance monitoring challenges.

* End-to-End SLAs/QoS To reap the most benefits from Carrier Ethernet’s lowest cost-per-Megabit economics, operators should begin SLA assurance with traffic classification and bandwidth profiling from the customer premises as well as employ end-to-end service monitoring to reduce operating costs. RAD’s Carrier Ethernet demarcation devices offer powerful traffic management capabilities as well as a full complement of performance monitoring and Ethernet OAM tools.
