Oversized 1st ISSUE 2011 is in your hands.

You will quickly notice that we have taken a comple-tely new path. For the future, we decided to publish only two issues of our magazine per year – but these two issues will be worth it! We kept the comprehensive content of the previous magazines to make sure you always get the complete picture. The key question for us was what the new magazine would have to look like and what feel we wanted to give the new format. Finding the right balance between design and content has not been easy. Neither to balance information and images to prevent the pages from getting overly crow-ded and to keep the reader interested. So we decided to outsource the technical details of the bikes in a separate specs issue and are now pleased to present to you a new way of reading our Oversized Magazine: We hope you’ll have fun with our pure BIKES · STYLE · MOTION - but make sure to explore also our specs issue for an overview of features and equipment.

Enjoy your journey through the exotic world of our stylish brand!

Fast. Light. Indestructible.HARdTAILThe hardtail has meanwhile become the most purist of all bikes – the original, unsuspended mountain bike.

A hardtail offers sound engineering and a reliable base. Particularly in the lower price segment, the hardtail is still the best buy.

The backbone of a hardtail is its main frame, which can be anything from brutally stiff to good-natured – depending on the material you choose. Radon’s hardtail line up lets you pick from a broad range of materials from steel and titanium up to alloy and carbon – it’s up to you to choose your weapon!

Radon offers two distinct bike types in the hardtail department. While the special in the alloy hardtail departe-ment frame geometry and compo-nent parts of the ZR Team have been selected primarily for comfortable touring pace, the frame geometry of our ZR Race addresses the more athletic rider.

The superior Rock Shox Reba fork at the front wheel stands for maximum fun on the trail no matter what type of rider you are while requiring only minimal adjustments and the extre-mely responsive and ultra-stiff 7005 alloy frame allows for highest cont-rol on all terrain. The rigid and solid chassis is rounded off by a list of im-pressive features rarely found in this price segment: an almost complete Shimano XT group set, the new For-mula RX brakes that easily live up to the legendary Oro K 18 and the Rock Shox Reba RL. With this exceptional deal, beginners as well as advanced mountain bikers will find themselves ahead of the game the next time on the trail …

Close followers in that top league are the smaller brothers 5.0 and 6.0 with frames and suspension systems identical to our successful high-end model…

Mountainbike 4/2011: “The upright seating position and the short head tube put lots of vertical pressure on the wheel – ideal for uphill and hilly ter-rain. Nevertheless, the ZR Race retains sufficient agility to handle also winding single trails. Radon is uncompromising when it comes to fork travel, brakes and wheel set and throws in luxury parts to make downhill runs comfortable.”

The weight-trimmed, triple-butted frame with an aggressive seating po-sition and Press Fit inner bearings for ultra-high stiffness knows only one direction: ahead! Nevertheless, the slender seat stays help to keep the rider from exhausting too quickly and the overall features, including a first-class suspension system, brutal disk brakes and lightest component parts will slow this bike down if and only if you want to. In 2011, Radon is for the first time equipping a bike below the mark of € 1,000 with the high-end ZR Race frame set, which allows also am-bitious newcomers to take on a racing position. Your ticket to the Formula 1 in mountain biking starts at € 999 - and for those who want to carry it to the extreme - ends at less than 8 kg…

had already been the motto for us in 2010 during trade shows, festivals and other events. It does not necessarily take a walk through our store to be im-pressed by the extraordinary price/performance ratio of Radon but customers will find a great selection of bikes in our RADON Center in Bonn that can be explored and taken out for a spin. The events organized by us in our store in Bonn are a great opportunity for that and for testing our RADON bikes during guided tours. Customers who prefer taking a closer look at the object of desire and get a direct impression without travelling all the way to Bonn can benefit from our bike events near them.

The following events should be marked in the calendar to explore, touch, try and test ride our RADON line up in 2011. Our RADON staff, team racers and bike developer Bodo Probst will answer questions, talk shop and assist you with all adjustments before your test ride.

See you there!

The new Stage has been tweaked up by Radon’s head designer Bodo Probst for 2011 and turned into a versatile do-it-all in our bike line up. ALL MOUNTAINAll-Mountain: Getting there is the goal, not just being on the road. Call it what you want, the important thing is getting wherever it is you want to go. You are not a Mr Nice Guy in the mountains but looking to release the ber-serker in you. Travel can only be substituted by more travel. Slide down, move up. This is where real men are made.

ENdUROYou are not one of these “bike pussies”. This is why you have come here right away. The fun is now over! Form follows function. The aim justi-fies the means. I’m a bike, not an eye-catcher. I want to be brutal. I want to be tortured and I will torture you. Hardcore bikes for crazy peop-le. Fork travel and not a walk along the beach. Chainwheel tattoos included. Slide DH, the most irrational way to a new bike. This is where you and normal people go separate ways.

THE ULTIMATE TRAIL BIKEWith every detail fine-tuned in 2011, the SLIDE AM frame set with light triple-butted hydro formed tubes features superior and smooth fork travel while the kinematics developed by Bodo Probst with quatro link technology allow for a complete blocking of the rear end under load, which effici-ently prevents pedal induced bobbing. New in 2011 is the cable guiding through ano-dised alloy clips along the down tube in our enti-re full-suspension series. The geometry has been adjusted to the brand new FOX Talas Generation

standard with 150mm travel whose responsive handling and smooth running will lower your heart rate downhill. With its pace setting performance, the SLIDE AM comes not only as a shock to your competitors on the single trail but will also make other bike manufacturers on the market nervous. The price for our SLIDE AM remains unchanged starting at € 1,799.

With extremely smooth 160mm suspension and an uncompromising touring weight, this ultimate trail bike features the broadest application range in the RADON line up and leaves nothing to be desi-red from bike parks up to hardcore alpine cross.Compared to the All Mountain, the Slide ED has two additional centimetres of fork travel, an ICSG mount and a steering angle, which is set two degree lower to offer enhanced stability and correspond to rougher terrain. This also allows for the use of chain guides or a Hammerschmidt crankset. Different from the All-Mountain, the SLIDE ED’s hydro formed tubes are reinforced at

expense of a moderately higher weight of approx. 100 gram for rougher trails. In view of the top performance, the rear end kinematics with quatro link technology designed by Bodo Probst remains unchanged in 2011. Cable routings have been adjusted analogous to the Skeen and Slide AM series.

In 2011, RADON’s SLIDE ED line up spans a wide range of application areas from exclusive custom-made super touring bikes with 11.7 kg combat weight up to the beginner bike Slide ED 7.0 available at a price of € 1,999.

The marathon weapon in Radon’s fleet has confir-med last year’s excellent results in 2011.

The fully active 120mm quatro link damper im-presses with minimum rider induced bobbing and exceptional levels of comfort on the trail, which makes this bike a perfect all-rounder for all pur-poses from marathon to all-mountain biking.

The carefully crafted hydro forming frame is not only a real eye-catcher but guarantees highest steering precision in combination with Radon’s Conehead for tapered suspension forks. To provide a higher degree of stiffness at the rear wheel and increase the precision and handling, the Skeen has been equipped with the original Syntace X12 axle system.

Mission accomplished!

The enhanced carbon version of our already suc-cessful Skeen faced a lot of expectations in the test season 2011 but in the end convinced across the board.

Compared to the alloy version of the Skeen, the Toray 40T fibre monocoque frame with inner mold technology achieves a frame weight reduction of 350 gram.

With the Radon Conehead, Press-Fit BB and an attractive cable routing inside the frame, the car-bon model is a forerunner of cutting edge design and technological know-how.

Featuring a rear end identical to the Skeen and a geometry made to fit 110mm of fork travel, the Skeen Carbon model is nothing less than a ticket to success.

In 2011, we are offering a great new set of wheels in the ladies bikes department. With our bike mo-dels ZR Team Lady and Stage Diva, we aimed at designing a perfect companion for beginners in the hardtail segment as well as for All Mountain biking enthusiasts. To this aim, Radon has spared no effort and asked its developer Bodo Probst to design two new frames specifically tailored to the needs of lady bikers.

The frames are available in three sizes of 15“, 17“ and 19“. The upper tubes are lowered and slightly bent downward to allow for more freedom of mo-vement. The use of thinner frame tubes matching the lower rider weight and a proper adjustment of shocks and dampers enable the outstanding performance of these bikes on the trail.

Contact surfaces such as seat and handlebars are carefully selected to fit the female body in the best possible way and to allow for highest degrees of comfort on the bike. In order to always leave a great impression on the trail, the colour fi-nish has also been thought over for our lady bikes and given an own look to set these bikes off from their counterparts in the men’s section…

36 | Radon Trekking

Help: I once used to be a bike!TREKKINGHave you enjoyed our magazine so far – or did you just flip the page open? Either way! The important thing is that you are looking for a bike. But what is a bike under the earlier terminology? A Dutch men’s bike, city cruiser, touring bike: You will find that none of the above is used any longer today. But don’t worry. All you want is to be outside. You are looking for some mode of transportation or to

get through town. You want to spend the weekend riding with your family. Maybe you have lost your driver’s license. To get to the point: You are now looking for a bike!

Today, when we speak of a bike, we usually mean a trekking bike. Does that already make more sense? Then let’s move on a bit: What you are looking for is a trek-king bike – to stay with the terminology – a bike that meets the safety requirements of the Road Traffic Regulations (StVO), the DIN and our own high quality standards. And this is exactly the re-ason why we do not offer a trekking bike in the

TREKKING

Page 37: RADON BIKES OVERSIZE MAGAZINE 01/2011 [english]

radon-bikes.com | 37

lower price segment (less than € 500). Trekking bikes can be broken down into two classes. 1) cross bikes (those without road equipment) and 2) trekking bikes (those including road equip-ment). What makes the difference between the two is the equipment and the features of the bike. The higher the quality, the lighter the bike will be. Radon has developed such a trekking bike – the Urban Titanium – a bike that features full road equipment at less than 10 kg of weight. Trekking bikes with standard equipment should include a hub dynamo, a robust and light rear rack, a smooth and intuitive gear system and hydraulic brakes. They should also have hollow section rims

(mind the kerbstone!), an ergonomically shaped frame and other ergonomic features such as a gel saddle and handles and adjustable stems. On the entry level, a trekking bike as just described should be around 14 kg.

If you are looking for a lighter bike (to enhan-ce boost and handling uphill and improve brake response), then make sure to select a high-end frame and weight-optimized component parts. Touring trekking bikes should feature a solid rear rack and disk brakes. Radon’s trekking bikes al-ways give you that degree of sophistication that leads to pure riding fun!

You are looking for the most successful trekking bike of the past years? Then you are looking in the right spot. No other trekking bike on the mar-ket has come out as winner in that many tests as the TCS Trekking Comfort Series.

Superior – an exemplary trekking bike – a master piece – amazing: the trade press can’t be all wrong. But what’s so special about the TCS? The focus of a TCS is on a combination of highest comfort and functionality. The geo-metry has been designed to be relaxing and to offer lots of boost. TCSs are a perfect daily companion for short rides to work or extensive weekend tours.

So far so good. What’s just been said can also be said of trekking bikes by other manufacturers. But it would be hard to beat our prices. With Radon’s TCS series you spend money on the bike and on nothing else. After all, that’s what counts, isn’t it? It’s not without a reason that 93% of the readers asked by Trekking Bike chose Radon as number one in terms of price-performance ratio.

In 2011, the TCS features a completely over-hauled ultra-light tube frame that saves about 350 gram compared to the previous model. A reduced seat post height of 27.2mm and 1.5cm lower bottom bracket make sure you are always comfortable on the bike. To improve hand-ling when carrying heavy luggage, the steering tube is slightly shortened and the luggage rack fasteners adjusted.

If you prefer somewhat sportier bikes and don’t mind giving up the suspension fork in favour of less weight, Radon’s TLS (Trekking Lite Series) is for you. With an average weight saving of about 2.5 kg and athletic ergonomics, the TLSeries is a perfect companion for speed-oriented all-roun-ders. The technical upgrades of the TCS series are of course also found in the TLS series, which exhibits dynamics similar to a cross bike while featuring high-end road equipment. The result is a bike somewhat less sporty than the Scart, but clearly the winner when it comes to daily use.

Radon’s trekking and cross bikes are also available as e-bikes with BionX motor system.

What makes a Scart a Scart? A Scart is basically a slimmed down version of a trekking bike, in other words, a cross bike that puts the focus not so much on daily use but on sportiness.

Scarts are a 100% synthesis between a racing and a mountain bike. They are swift on the road and provide lots of boost: the ideal sports machi-ne for all types of terrain whether downtown, on forest or field trails or simply when taking a spin along the riverside – a Scart is always pure fun! Your Scart will take you to the beer garden or let you lose some pounds. It will take you to work in the morning or on a date at night. Wherever you go, you will always be in good company.

The idea to create a prototype for a Scart was brought forward to us by Men‘s Health magazine. The requirement was to develop a sophisticated fitness bike that would be light, robust, manly and suitable for every day use – and it had to be available at a price of € 699.

If you are attracted to style and groundbreaking design, make sure to take a look at our Scart Alfine that was designed for Sansibar on Sylt this year.

The Skill stands for a completely new bike class. Designed as a bike for the road with racing bike components but with a more comfortab-le seating position than classic racing bikes, the Skill counts as a full-fledged “fitness bike”. Speed coupled with comfort and some touring characteristics describe this bike the best. The straight handlebars allow for a very precise handling making this bike suitable for city cruises as much as for rougher terrains.

In 2011, the riding characteristics of the SKILL have become once more sportier through a careful selection of superior component parts.

The wheel set features a combination of high-end Shimano racing and mountain bike com-ponents that guarantee smooth running and great precision.

The SUNSET is Radon’s latest shooting star in the trekking bike arena. Its name reflects the missi-on: a bike that will make you want to keep riding until the sunset hours.

Our SUNSET is the high-tech model in the trek-king segment equipped with an all new and weight trimmed frame that builds the basis for sporty and comfortable trekking bikes. The frame weight is slightly below 1,600 gram and the level of comfort increased by a lower seat post height of 27.2mm. Internal cable routings and smooth welding seams round off the design of this eye-catching high-class trekking bike. The frame geometry with sophisticated and hydro formed tubes is oriented along the lines of our MTB flagship Skeen and makes for a great and confident look. The high standard of the SUNSET is rounded off by a package of luxurious features that are going to sweeten up your day on the road... and into the SUNSET.

aktiv Radfahren 01-02/2011:“The new and sporty Sunset makes you want to hop on – not only in the late evening hours. Com-ponent parts, design, weight and running charac-teristics have been carefully thought out. And all this is offered at a fair price.”

The RADON Spire is a completely new develop-ment for 2011 following in the footsteps of the success model RCS. The technical requirements for the team around Bodo included sporty cha-racteristics, minimum weight and the usual rigid-ness of a RADON bike. To top it off: elegance and a great visual appeal, continuity of the design and tons of riding pleasure for many hours on the road.

The result of our efforts is the SPIRE, which boasts a coated frame weight of approx. 960 gram below the magic 1 kg mark while maintaining highest stability. Featuring the proven EASTON EC 90 fork with conical shaft, the bike’s frame set is trimmed further down in weight, rigid and extremely pow-erful. The bike is rounded off with a high-end and light set of wheels that guarantee the ambitious rider the full touring and fun factor.

The main features of the Spire frame are organi-cally shaped carbon tubes reinforced at the lower head tube and bottom bracket and leading to maximum stiffness as well as a slender design at the rear end for maximum levels of comfort. On top of that, the Spire frame features a conically shaped head tube that is reinforced towards the fork and allows for highest steering precision. Spire 6.0

The RPS is the most versatile bike in our road line up. Particularly racers on the entry level will find that its geometry leaves no wish unfulfilled. Cyclists can rely on the great perfor-mance of its component parts and the harmonic frame arrangement that offers an all new feeling of silently gli-ding ahead.

During extensive tours, the multiple test winner RPS convinces even pro riders with its rigid wheel set, its slo-ping geometry, sporty genes and ex-treme fun factor. Tons of comfort is achieved with the lowered upper tube that results in a higher seat position and the shortened tube length.

In 2011, the RPS is offered in a li-mited Mallorca Edition with a great selection of component parts and at a price that will make not only advan-ced riders take on a racing position.

Featuring a rigid alloy 7005 triple butted hydro form tubing frame that puts the rider into a sporty and comfortable riding position, the R1 is ready for ambitious after work rides and races or the sudden need for speed. Its frame and Press Fit inner bearings reduce the bike’s overall weight and increase its stiffness making the boost arrive where it belongs: on the road.

While the focus has been on getting out maxi-mum boost, the developers put a lot of attention on comfort as well, which is indispensable for long bike tours or marathons. All this is achieved by use of the latest manufacturing techniques in frame construction, varying tube thicknesses and the Flex Stay rear end that helps to absorb the roughest impacts with its slender design. The R1 is equipped with a sophisticated carbon fork that combines maximum precision with comfort. Its design is topped off with premium component parts, beginning with the group and the wheel set up to the smallest detail. All parts such as fork, seat, bar tape etc. match the special frame finish.

But the best is yet to come: in 2011, the high-end alloy frame of the R1 is offered at a price of € 999 as complete bike ... or as the editors of the magazine Rennrad put it in their issue 01/2011: “... a cracking bike for small money!”

One has to be a little crazy to start a steel pro-ject in these times of carbon frames below 1,000 gram, heated shoe soles for winter tours and electronic gear shifting systems. After all, the Golden Days of people like Fausto Coppi and Eddi Merckx clearly belong to the past and steel frames are often thought of as not rigid enough or simply old fashioned.

Exactly this became the motivation for Radon’s developer team who took up the challenge to design a steel frame for road bikes that would be nostalgic and emotional on the one hand and an example of state-of-the-art design on the other. The bike had to be a rigid and light resemblance of the Golden Age in biking. The frame under a stylish retro-look finish is hand-welded in Germany and made from lightweight Columbus Life tube to perfectly fit the ideas of the developers. Equipped with selected com-ponent parts and brought to the market in a limited edition, Radon’s Road Steel is a bike crafted for aesthetes and road enthusiasts. Its low weight and the exceptional values tempt to

go on speedy rides. But in reality this bike is just too beautiful to race by …

Our efforts were rewarded with a nomination for the Milestone Award by the editors of TOUR in 2009, which has made us particularly proud and shows us that we are working into the right di-rection. For 2011, Radon’s Road Steel has again been trimmed down in weight, made yet more so-phisticated and all in all better … for people who still want to take it outside!
