The recent world events have given us greater awareness about radiation exposure and its effect on our health. There is more emphasis on the amount of radiation in our food and water and concern about the long term effects on our body - much is not fully known about these effects.
We do know that radiation exposure can be linked to immune problems and conditions such as allergies and cancer. Many people with a cancer diagnosis are treated with radiation and several have concerns about the latent effect on their health.
Organic foods and purified water supports immune health and may prevent radiation build up in our body. Genuine essential oils and other products may further enhance protection and prevention against radiation build up and its effects on the body.
To learn more about choosing quality essential oils, check out my Biz TV link on Essential Oil Quality. There are certain characteristics to look for in essential oils when it comes to radiation prevention such as:
• Antioxidant Qualities
• DNA Protection
• Relief of Symptoms due to Radiation
Let’s look at some specific essential oils.

Peppermint (Mentha x piperita)
Peppermint is a very popular
oil and known for its benefits
to enhance energy and mental
alertness. There is a great deal of research to
support the radiation protective benefits of
Peppermint.
Several studies from Samarth and associates (2003,
2004, 2006, 2009) demonstrated the effectiveness
of Peppermint in mice to have a radioprotective
role specifically with the hematopoietic system,
bone marrow, and lungs. Possible explanations
included the antioxidant properties and free radical
scavenging activities demonstrated by Peppermint
which may have led to the radiation protection.
In a 2010 study by Baliga and Rao, also done with
mice, found that Peppermint protected the mice
against radiation induced sickness. In addition,
Peppermint protected radiosensitive organs
such as the testes, gastrointestinal tract and the
hematopoietic systems. They relate that this effect
also may be related to the antioxidant properties of
Peppermint that can enhance the DNA repair process.
Peppermint was given by oral ingestion to mice in
most of the studies. Genuine (organic) Peppermint
essential oil can be added to water to drink
throughout the day. Peppermint is very warm and it
is suggested to add 1-2 drops to a gallon of water
which can be stored in the refrigerator and drank at
various times during the day. Remember to use a
glass container - not plastic. The oil will dissolve the
plastic over time.
Peppermint essential oil can be inhaled and many
people find this an easy remedy for various concerns
such as nausea and fatigue. Inhalation can be
a remedy for protection too. Place 1-2 drops of
Peppermint oil on a tissue or cottonball and inhale
throughout the day. You can also put 1-2 drops of
Peppermint oil in a teaspoon of your favorite carrier
oil (such as coconut oil or jojoba oil) and place on
the soles of the feet every morning to begin your
day and give that added protection.

SAFETY DATA: Peppermint is a warm oil and may be sensitive for some skin types. Always dilute in a carrier oil (as above) before putting onto the body such as the soles of the feet.
Rosemary (Rosmarius officinalis CT 1,8 cineole)
Rosemary essential oil is well
known for its use in cooking
and as an aid for digestion. It has been used in
history for memory and to assist with mental clarity. A
great deal of research has shown Rosemary essential
oil and its constituents to have strong antioxidant
qualities and DNA protective effects. A 2006 study
done by Jindal et al identified that Rosemary showed
good radioprotective effects in mice who were
exposed to gamma radiation.
Sancheti & Goyal (2006) did a study that suggested
Rosemary had radioprotective benefits in mice. In
2007, a study by Costa et al showed that carnosic
acid from Rosemary demonstrated good free
radical scavenging capacity and cell protective
effects. These studies help support the use of
Rosemary essential oil to protect and heal from
radiation exposure.
Rosemary essential oil can be added to cooking.
Only a drop or trace is needed - add to sauces or
other foods to gain the healthy benefits of Rosemary.
Rosemary can be inhaled with 1-2 drops on a tissue
or cottonball. This may be helpful during times of
“brain fog.” Add 1-2 drops of Rosemary in your
favorite carrier oil and place on the soles of the feet
or over the abdomen for added health benefits.

SAFETY DATA: Rosemary essential oil may cause sensitivity on the skin - dilute if using on skin.
Tea Tree (Melaleuca alternifolia)
Tea Tree essential oil has a
long history of use with the
Aboriginal culture for a variety
of conditions and is known to support the immune
system. Recently, tea tree oil has received a lot of
press for its effectiveness in skin care.
Many people use 1-2 drops of genuine Tea Tree oil
in about 2 cups of water and do a face wash. This
method can be great as a face cleanser or toner.
The current research has shown Tea Tree to be
effective for prevention and treatment of oral fungal
infections of immunocompromised individuals
(Bagg et al, 2006).
This condition is often seen in people who receive
radiation treatment. Rob received radiation for a
cancer near his face. He developed sores in his
mouth which were painful. He used 1 drop of Tea
Tree essential oil in a 6-8oz glass of water and then
he would swish this mixture in his mouth and then
spit out into the sink. He would do this 2-3 times per
day and found it to be helpful in providing comfort
and healing.
Many Aromatherapists have used Tea Tree
essential oil for burns related to radiation therapy.
However, there is no consistency nor studies in their
suggestions for Tea Tree usage on radiation burns.
Most often Tea Tree essential oil (1-2 drops) will be
diluted in a carrier oil (1 teaspoon) such as Tamanu
to enhance the effect of reducing inflammation.

SAFETY DATA: Tea Tree may cause sensitization for some individuals when used over an extended period of time. It is suggested to use Tea Tree essential oil for short periods of time or to alternate with other genuine essential oils.
Frankincense (Boswellia carterii)
Frankincense essential oil has
been used since ancient times
for all ailments. It comes from
the resin of the tree and then is harvested and
distilled. Frankincense oil is high in monoterpenes
known to support the immune system. I like putting
a drop or 2 on the soles of my feet to help ground
yet uplift me to bring balance to my immune system
and emotions.
According to Price & Price (2012), Frankincense
essential oil may provide comfort due to its anti-
inflammatory activity. There has been a lot of
research on Frankincense and its constituents
related to cancer care. We have a saying, ‘when in
doubt, get your frankincense out!’ Frankincense oil
is gentle and can be applied on the skin to bring
balance and comfort.

SAFETY DATA: Know your source as most Frankincense oil is adulterated.
Lemongrass (Cymbopogon flexuosus)
Lemongrass essential oil has
long been used by massage
therapists and other body
workers to aid in the healing of torn ligaments and
muscles. However, Lemongrass essential oil has
noted qualities to support the immune system and
circulation.
Research has identified that Lemongrass essential
oil stimulates detoxification enzymes (Nakamura
et al, 2003) and inhibits DNA damage (Suayen et
al, 1997). Both of these qualities can have a benefit
with radiation protection and contribute to healing.
You can use 1-2 drops of Lemongrass essential oil
into 1 teaspoon of your favorite carrier oil and place
onto the feet or area of concern for protection and
other health benefits. Connie used this mixture on
her abdomen to ease her constipation secondary
to her chemotherapy treatment. Avoid placing this
mixture on the area of radiation as it may cause
greater skin irritation. Connie also would inhale
Lemongrass essential oil to give her an energy
boost during her treatment days.
Jan used Lemongrass essential oil as part of a
detoxification bath after her radiation treatments
were done. She used 5 drops of Lemongrass
essential oil, 5 drops of Tea Tree essential oil and
5 drops of Orange essential oil in 2 cups of Epsom
Salts. She used a 1/2 cup of this mixture and poured
into the running water of her bath. Make sure the
salts are dissolved before you get into the bath!
