WNIT FIRST ROUND VS. PSU

▪ After being upset in the Big South semifinals,

Radford was left with unfinished business and

took care of some of that business with a 63-

62 overtime win against Penn State.

▪ With the win, Radford becomes the first Big

South team to win a WNIT game since 2013,

while earning its third postseason win.

▪ The win over the Nittany Lions marks the

first win over a Big Ten opponent in program

history.

▪ With the win, head coach Mike McGuire picks

up his second win over a Power 5 program in

the last two seasons.

▪ Radford placed four in double-figures: Desti-

nee Walker (13), Janayla White (12), Jayda

Worthy (11), Khiana Johnson (10).

▪ The Highlanders placed four in double-figures

for the ninth time on the season.

▪ Radford improves to 8-1 in overtime games

under Mike McGuire.

▪ Forcing 21 turnovers, Radford turned the mis-

cues into 19 points. However, the Highlanders

turned the ball over 23 times.

▪ Five different Highlanders finished with two

steals each.

WNIT HISTORY

▪ Radford made its eighth postseason appear-

ance—three trips to the NCAA Tournament and

five trips to the WNIT.

▪ The Highlanders made their third trip in the

WNIT in the last four years.

▪ In 2016-2017, Radford dropped an 80-59 first-

round matchup to Commonwealth foe James

Madison.

▪ Before the 2017 WNIT appearance, Radford

faced East Carolina in 2015, marking its first

postseason game since 2008. The Highlanders

fell 74-52 to the Pirates.

▪ In 2008, Radford faced James Madison for the

first time in postseason play, falling 80-58 to

the Dukes.

▪ The Highlanders are 3-5 all-time in the WNIT.

▪ Radford’s first WNIT appearance came in 1989

as the Highlanders set the program record

for wins (25) in a season, finishing 25-7 after

going 2-1 in the WNIT. The wins came against

DePaul and Richmond. The one loss of the

first WNIT appearance came in a 99-92 double

overtime loss to San Diego State.

BSC POSTSEASON HONOREES

▪ Earning first team honors for the second time

in her career was senior Janayla White,

while fellow senior Jayda Worthy was named

the league’s defensive player of the year in

addition to her second team honors.

▪ In all, four Highlanders were recognized, head-

lined by White and Worthy. Destinee Walker

joined the duo with all-conference honors as

she earned a spot on the honorable mention

team. Redshirt sophomore Jen Falconer was

acknowledged on the all-academic team for

the first time in her career.

▪ White received two first-place votes and

totaled 110 points, finishing 10 points behind

Liberty’s Keyen Green for the league’s player

of the year award. Worthy tallied two first-place

votes for 17 total points, edging Presbyterian’s

Cortney Storey for the defensive player of the

year honor.

▪ The core of White, Worthy and Walker finished

as Radford’s top three scorers; responsible

for 30.7 of Radford’s 61.4 points per game.

The same trio earned all-conference a season

ago as Radford has placed three players on

all-conference teams in back-to-back seasons

for the first time since 1988-89/1989-90.

ANOTHER ONE FOR MCGUIRE

▪ Mike McGuire was named Big South Coach

of the Year for the second time in his five

seasons at the helm of the Highlanders.

▪ McGuire donned the honor in 2015 after

leading the Highlanders to a 10-win difference

in the 2014-15 season.

▪ McGuire led the Highlanders to a 22-7 regular

season record and a 15-3 clip in conference

play. Radford has won 20 games in back-

to-back seasons, marking the first time the

Highlanders have done so since the 2006-

07/2007-08 campaigns.

▪ The 15 Big South wins set a new program

record.

▪ McGuire joins Charlene Curtis as the only two-

time winner of the award in program history.

Radford has won the award seven times in its

storied program.

RADFORD WOMEN’S BASKETBALL....................................................................................................................................................................

RECORDS MEANT TO BE BROKEN

▪ Radford made Big South history Jan. 20 after-

noon as the Highlanders shot a scorching 72.2

percent from the field in a 93-55 victory over

Presbyterian, setting the conference record

for highest field goal percentage in a game

and a conference game as five Highlanders

finished in double-digits in record breaking

performance.

▪ The previous conference record of 71.9

percent belonged to former league member

UNC Greensboro as the Spartans finished 41

for 57 from the field on Feb. 11, 1994 against

UNC Asheville.

▪ Having already matched a program record set

in the 1980s earlier in the season, Radford

crushed another record as the 2017-18 squad

broke a 35-year old mark in field goal per-

centage that served as the women’s Dedmon

Center and program record.

▪ Radford’s previous best came against Pem-

broke State on Dec. 3, 1983 with a shooting

clip of 65.3 percent.

▪ The new mark ranks as the 13th best percent-

age in NCAA Division I women’s basketball

history.

▪ Returning home for the first time since Jan.

9, Radford made 39 of 54 attempts for the

record of 72.2 percent as the Highlanders shot

over 70-percent in three of the four quarters.

Radford was five made field goals away from

matching the program and conference record.

THE DEFENSE OF A HIGHLANDER

▪ 21 out of Radford’s last 28 opponents have

been held below 60 points.

▪ The Highlanders allowed only 60-plus points in

three of the 18 league games last season, all

coming as losses.

▪ In the last 22 games, 18 opponents have

been held below 40 percent shooting as the

Highlanders rank second with a 36.3 field

goal percentage against, which is 66th in the

country.

▪ Radford led the Big South in hold opposing

league teams to a 33.1 shooting clip last

season.

▪ The Highlander defense held Big South foes

to 48.8 points per game, while ranking fifth

nationally with a 52.6 scoring defense.

▪ Radford also ranked 15th nationally with a 27.4

three-point field goal percentage defense.

▪ Radford’s defense forced 18-plus turnovers in

14 games on the season.

▪ Forcing 16.2 turnovers per game, Radford

averaged 12.7 points per game off opponent

miscues.

▪ Moving their feet on defense, the Highlanders

only committed 441 fouls, which ranked 21st

in the nation, while committing only 13.8 per

game to rank 17th.

▪ Sophomore Lydia Rivers and senior Janayla

White led Radford’s defense to ranking 31st in

the nation in blocked shots per game with 4.9

per game.

▪ Totaling 157 as a team to rank 28th nationally,

White blocked 56 with Rivers following with 53.

▪ Nationally, White ranked 46th with 2.00 per

game and Rivers ranked 88th with 1.66.

DEFENSE, THE MCGUIRE WAY

▪ In his first season at the helm of the Highland-

ers, opponents averaged 65.1 ppg against

Mike McGuire.

▪ Since that first season, McGuire’s teams have

only allowed opponents to average over 60

points one time, coming during the 2014-15

season.

▪ Currently through ten games, opponents are

averaging 58.0 per game, which ranks 68th in

the country.

WALKER HITS A GRAND

▪ Senior forward Destinee Walker hit a left-corner

3-pointer in the opening quarter at Mount St.

Mary’s (1/2/19), putting her over 1,000 for her

career.

ROLLING, ROLLING ON THE RIVER

▪ With a 24-9 record, the 2016-17 squad ranked

second all-time for most season wins in

program history.

▪ Radford’s program record for wins in a season

is 25, set during the 1988-89 season. The

Highlanders went 25-7 that season.

▪ The last Radford team to win 20-plus games in

a season was the 2007-08 squad with 23 wins.

▪ In the last three seasons under head coach

Mike McGuire, Radford has posted win totals

of 17, 18, and 24.

Highlanders to a 48-10 (.839) record inside the

Dedmon Center, which included a 21-game

winning streak

RADFORD GIVES VIRGINIA TECH

A SCARE

The Highlanders came up a bit short in their bid for

an upset against undefeated Virginia Tech as they

fell to the Hokies, 55-44, on Tuesday evening at

Cassell Coliseum. The Highlanders slid to 3-3 on

the season as all three losses have come against

Power 5 opponents.

Redshirt junior center Savannah Felgemacher

returned to the lineup and paced the Highlanders

with 13 points and nine rebounds in 28 minutes.

Felgemacher knocked down 3-of-7 3-pointers and

finished 5-of-11 overall from the floor. Senior forward

Destinee Walker added 12 points and redshirt junior

forward Lydia Rivers contributed 11 rebounds and

three rejections.

The Highlanders surprised the 1,763 fans in

attendance with their tough-minded defense as they

took a 23-19 lead into the break. Radford held the

high-scoring Hokies to just 25 percent shooting (8-

of-32) in the opening 20 minutes.

PLAYING “D” THE RIGHT WAY

▪ Radford is known for their strong defensive

play under Mike McGuire.

▪ This season, the Highlanders are 4th in the

Big South with a 59.9 points against average.

(96th, NCAA). One reason for the low scoring

production by opponents is the fact that the

Highalnders rarely foul. In fact, Radford is 20th

in the country with 13.9 fpg. The Highlanders

are also 128th in the NCAA in 3-pt fg defense

(29.7 percent) and are 94h in overall field goal

percentage defense (37.2 percent).

RADFORD WOMEN’S BASKETBALL....................................................................................................................................................................

Radford University officials introduced Mike McGuire on Wednesday, April 24, 2013 as the Highlanders’ seventh NCAA head women’s basketball coach in program history. Widely recognized as one of the up-and-coming head coaches in the country, McGuire has quickly laid a solid foundation for the program moving forward. The 2017-18 season saw McGuire lead Radford to its sec-ond straight 24-9 mark, compiling a 48-18 record over the last two seasons, which ranks as the best two-year mark in program history. The Highlanders finished with a 15-3 clip in Big South play, the most wins in program history. For the second straight season, Radford dropped no more than two games in a row.Leading Radford to its third straight Big South Tournament semifinal appearance, McGuire and the Highlanders made back-to-back WNIT appearances as part of a stretch that saw the team make the WNIT in three of four years. The Highlanders defeated Big Ten foe Penn State, 63-62, in overtime for the third postseason win in program history. For the second consecutive season, Radford placed three on All-Big South teams as Janayla White earned first-team honors, while Jayda Worthy was named to the second team. Destinee Walker earned a spot on the honorable mention squad. In his fourth season after taking over the reins of the women’s program, McGuire’s put together one of the most memorable seasons in program history during the 2016-17 campaign. McGuire has increased the program’s win totals from seven in his first season to 17, 18 and 24 over the last three seasons. Since that 7-23 season in 2013-14, McGuire has compiled a 83-44 record.Dropping no more than two games in a row throughout the season, Radford concluded its magical 2016-17 season with a 24-9 record, finishing with the second most wins in program history. Only the 1988-89 squad won more games, compiling a 25-7 record. In Big South play, Radford finished with a 14-4 record for the second most conference wins in the team’s history, matching the record set during the 2014-15 season. Rack-ing up the wins on the floor, Radford also racked up its first Big South Regular Season Championship in 25 years, defeating Campbell with a thrilling 49-48 win. Radford’s lockdown defense was a major part of the 2016-17 success. The Highlander defense finished the season ranked inside the Top 15 nationally in two defensive categories. Holding opponents to a mere 55.0 points per game, Radford ranked as the 10th best defense in the country. The Highlanders ranked 11th with a 35.1 field goal percentage defense. Radford collected two three-point victories in the Big South Tournament, earning its first championship appearance since 2008. The Highlanders fell just short of earning its

first trip to the NCAA Tournament since 1996, dropping the championship game 49-48 to UNC Asheville. The Highlanders made their second WNIT appearance under McGuire and the seventh postseason appearance in program history.Despite a 2015-16 season ravaged by injuries, McGuire steered Radford to its most wins (18) since the 2007-08 season. The Highlanders, who tied for third in the Big South regular-season standings, advanced to the semifinals of the Big South tournament for the first time since 2013. Defense was the cornerstone of Radford’s success. The Highlanders concluded the season ranked fifth in the na-tion in field-goal percentage defense (.333), 14th in scoring defense (53.3) and 16th in blocks per game (5.6). Individually, two Radford players (Janayla White and Aisha Foy) were named to the All-Big South first team for the first time since 1992-93. In just his second season at the helm (2014-15), McGuire guided the Highlanders to their third WNIT in school history. Radford, which finished with a 17-14 overall record, including a 14-6 Big South ledger, finished tied for second in the Big South regular-season standings. It was the Highlanders’ highest finish in the conference standings since 2010-11.

McGuire’s work did not go unnoticed as the conference’s 11 head coaches selected him Big South Coach of the Year, marking the sixth head coach in program history to earn the accolade. The Highlanders’ 10-win improvement from the 2013-14 season to the 2014-15 season was tied for the sixth-best turnaround in the nation. In addition to his coaching responsibilities, McGuire is the Big South Conference Captain, a role he will serve until 2018. He is also the women’s basketball head coach representative from the Big South Conference on the NCAA Regional Advisory Committee, which is a three-year commitment. Before Radford, McGuire spent 2008-13 as an assistant coach at the University of Richmond where he helped lead the Spiders to five straight postseason berths and a 101-60 overall record. For the second consecutive season in 2012-13, Florida Basketball Magazine named McGuire one of the top assistant coaches in the nation, and at the conclusion of the 2011-12 season, National Basketball Insider recognized him as one of the Top-14 Mid-Major assistant coaches in the country.McGuire and his wife, Nataleigh, reside in Riner with their daughters, Harper and Ellie.
