DetectingandRespondingtoIllicit Discharges

Anillicitdischarge,asdefinedbytheEPA,isanydischargetotheMunicipalSeparateStormSewerSystem(MS4)thatisnotcomposedentirelyofstormwater,exceptfordischargesallowedunderaVPDESpermitorwatersusedforfirefighting operations.

Ifanillicitdischargeofsewageorotherpollutants,typifiedbyhighturbidity,odors,floatablesandunusualcolorsareencountered,notifyFacilitiesManagementat (540)– 831-7800.Ifyouknowthatatoxicsubstancewasreleased,calltheRadfordUniversityPoliceat(540)– 831-5500andFacilitiesManagementat(540)– 831-7800.

receivingwatercoursesandthelandscape’sabilitytofiltereffluentfromthedewateringprocess.Awoodedbuffer(withsufficientunderbrush)orturfarepreferredareasto discharge.

• Useproductsonlyasdirected.• Providecleanupsuppliesneardesignatedmaintenanceareastofacilitateimmediate

cleanup.Usedrycleanupmethods(e.g.,rag,damp rags, andabsorbentmaterials)ratherthanhosingdowntheareatopreventdischargetostormdrains.

• Avoidapplicationoverimpervioussurfaces;sweepgranularfertilizerbackontothegrasstopreventitfromwashingintothestorm sewer system.

• Donotapplyherbicides,fertilizers,orpesticidestobareoreroding soil.• Nopesticidesnearopenwaterssuchasstreamsandcreeksunlesstheproductisspecifically

designed for useinshorelineoraquatic environments.• Neverapplychemicalsbeforeapredictedrainfallevent,duringperiodsofhighwindspeeds
